Poor selection of tv channels , waiting for fried eggs for breakfast really puts the chef about, poorly organised evening meals queuing for meat and finally they tried to charge me 2 euro 60 for a small bottle of water out the mini bar

A generally well managed hotel which could do with revising its nightly entertainment to meet with its client base.

Visited 16 years ago but it appears now that the 5 Star part gets preferential treatment in everything. Looking a bit sorry for it's self and in need of lots of TLC.

We have just had 2 wonderful weeks at the Hotel Fortina in Sliema. It was so relaxing, I am envious of anyone who is going. The accommodation is good the food is excellent and the spa facilities are just endless and they do manicures and hair. What more could a girl ask for.

“This is the fourth time we have been to the Hotel...”

★★★★★

written by mgoldman on 08/02/2007

This is the fourth time we have been to the Hotel Fortina in January and this time we prospectively upgraded to a deluxe room. This was an excellent idea and for the extra money provided a quantum leap over the standard rooms, avoid room 228 which essentially has no window. As we were not on the 5 star deal, we could not eat in the Japanese or Taste restaurant. The health food restaurant was closed, which is a pity, as it amongst the best there.
Room quality and cleaning were excellent. Two queen size beds, a settee sitting area and stocked minibar included. As it is Winter, there were virtually no children so it was pretty quiet and the average age of clients was retirement age.
The spa/health centre has been enlarged and is busy. I use the swimming pool there a lot and it is excellent. My wife had some beauty spa treatments, which were judged to be good.
The hotel is located near the Sliema bus terminus and it is easy to buy a bus pass and see all the island.
Most people eat in the buffet restaurant because they opt for cheap deals, often from Mercury travel. This has improved over the years and this year there was some imaginative food including quail, spaghetti with octopus sauce, vegetarian Strognoff with mushrooms and nuts. Deserts are unimaginative and tend to be flans/cakes or fresh fruit. At breakfast there is an omelette bar if you want freshly cooked eggs.
The brasserie restaurant is probably the best of the included evening restaurants and you get a table de hote menu with adequate choices and big servings. This appears to be freshly prepared and is of great quality. For a supplement, not really necessary, you can eat off an a la carte menu.
The Indian restaurant is now much better and by using mix and match, you can have a good curry! It is also open at lunchtime if your stomach can take it. Avoid the pizza restaurant where the pizzas are tasteless.
The other great thing is the bar service. In the Winter there are two bars, one of them is none smoking, and you can have pretty much what you want, sometimes with local ingredients, all day long. There is a cocktail list but some taste a bit medicinal and it is included. In the Winter the bars are busy but OK. I hate to think what it must be like in Summer when the professional drinkers arrive.
Entertainment in the lower bar is awful. It is one or two singers with an organ each night but there only appear to be 50 songs known in the whole of Malta, and each singer has them on their repertoire. By the time I had heard Lady in Red for the tenth night running, I gave up and left. There are some keen ballroom dancers in the bar and seem to be of local origin.
I will definitely go again and will definitely upgrade to a minimum of deluxe room.

written by Lindsay Stewart on 25/02/2006

Hotel Fortina was probably our worst holiday ever. We spent 6 weeks in a room which measured 4.19m by 2.74m and when we asked about the free upgrades we were told it would cost us £700. The Mercury rep was useless. The beds were only fit for children.

Lindsay Stewart's Response to Lindsay Stewart's Review

Written on: 26/02/2006

Here's more of my review. The beds were only 76cm wide but even then the tatty sheets did not fit and often we woke on the bare mattress. We also had to put up with noise all the time. Workers going to the site next door at 6.30am, coaches dropping of guests at 4.00am and people coming from bars and diners late at night.
Food ranged from excellent to so-so but we were put off by seeing a COCKROACH climbing the wall of La Vallette and another trodden on by a guest.

written by eatonsj on 05/12/2005

The deal sold was not delivered. Sliema, Hotel Fortina 4 * room with sea view and all inclusive. Room smelt of heavy mould / urine. Bath was very old and only suitable for showering. Food was offered in 6 restaurants. Set menu for guests was just about school dinner standard and anything off the guest menu was an extra £9 per person per meal. The guest menu was very basic and so bad in fact we ate out after two sittings. The inclusive drinks were poor brands, in small glasses and all the fruit juices were heavily watered down. The swimming pools around the hotel were very old and not inviting. The staff were always trying to sell the products that were booked as standard. The gym was not that bad though...bit old again, but a decent set of dumbells!!! all in all a very poor 2* hotel at 4* prices.

I went to the Hotel Fortina during May and had a great time with fantastic Spa treatments and terrific food what else could a lady want? No seriously, the staff were helpful and friendly and I adored the food with such a wide choice including my favourite Japanese with the addition of restaurants serving, Indian, Chinese, Thai, Italian, Maltese there was so much choice and there was a super self-service restaurant and the staff were so lovely.
I especially enjoyed the Thallasso treatments and my skin felt super soft at the end of five days here.
With only a short flight from the UK this is a sure certain place to book again - I made some lovely friends and we are planning a get together over there before Xmas!
The Spa bedrooms are wonderful with such amazing bathrooms with all the Spa equipment to hand and even the therapists can visit the rooms and give massages etc - sheer luxury for the stressed!

written by pinksarah on 15/09/2005

We have just returned from the best holiday we have ever had at the Hotel Fortina. The food was amazing - you can eat in any one of 7 Restaurants (soon to be 8) as part of your all inclusive holiday. A La Carte Menus are also available at an extra cost. Admittedly the older part of the Hotel is a little shabby, and the rooms didn't look that big, but we were fortunate enough to stay in a Tower Bedroom with a beautiful view of Valletta Harbour. We did indulge in a couple of spa treatments too - which are a little overpriced, but very nice!! The only disappointment really was that the entertainment was a few dodgy live singers (except one who was good) and is aimed at the older audience. We are already planning to return in a couple of years!! Would definitely book another holiday with Sunspot too.

written by Cassie Smith on 01/09/2005

We have just returned from The Hotel Fortina in Sliema, Malta. What a lovely hotel!
The holiday was great, and we do feel very chilled out now.
We stayed in a Spa bedroom, with our own swimming pool, and one evening the Chef came and cooked beside the pool for us on the BBQ!
The Spa bedrooms are lovely, and in their bathrooms one has the state of the art Spa equipment for personal use including a Sauna, hydro bath and a terrific machine called a Dermalife for detoxing, which my partner loved, and this was his excuse to consume more alcohol and then detox!
The Restaurants at the hotel are tremendous, with Japanese, Thai, Indian, Maltese, and even a healthy dietary one for those people who love to count fat content, calories, and all manner of things in their food!
We loved the Staff, and they made us feel really welcome.
I am going to go back in September! Basically to use the Spa and have the many lovely treatments on offer. Here again, the Staff are lovely and very helpful.

The Hotel Fortina was not bad overall, but too expensive.
4 star standard expected and paid for on the holiday which was more like a 2 star.
Room standard poor. The staff continually attempting to get more money from you on upgrades which were expected in the original price due to the way the holiday was sold as 4 star.

“Sliema, Hotel Fortina - We had a ten day stay at this...”

★★★★★

written by Mike Gatt on 03/08/2005

Sliema, Hotel Fortina - We had a ten day stay at this wonderful place. On arrival we were upgraded to a Tower Seaview room for just a little extra but it was well worth it as the views are amazing over to Valletta especially at night where we could see all the firework displays over at Valletta and beyond.

The room was clean and very comfortable with a sunny balcony, the bathroom was equipped with a Jacuzzi bath and large shower.

We ate ourselves silly as the choice of restaurants in this hotel are out of this world with Japanese, Thai/Chinese, Indian, Maltese style Brassiere, Healthy Options and a lovely self service restaurant that alone out-classes most all-inclusive hotel packages! Needless to say my poor wife, feeling very guilty, opted to visit the Spa on a daily basis for massage treatments plus the cellulite treatments on offer.

We were also given in our package free entry to the Thallasso pool classes, again greatly appreciate after all the sumptious food and plenty of booze! The hotel has several pools but we remained around the Garden pool as no children were allowed and there is a great island bar to relax and watch the world go by. We went on a couple of free trips included in the package and we especially found the Grand Harbour trip on the Captain Morgan boat very good.

There did seem to be plenty of regulars at this hotel, which I also find comforting, obviously they have enjoyed it and keep going back.

My wife loved the friendly and helpful staff who made us feel so welcome each morning until dusk.

Yes, we will go back here, hopefully before not too long.

“The Hotel Fortina is great for those who want to...”

★★★★★

written by Mrs P on 30/07/2005

The Hotel Fortina is great for those who want to unwind and relax and use the spa treatments. The new 5 star block is superb and the rear of the hotel is in a different world to the front. The lifts are slow and small and the superior rooms are not what I would class as superior, although our room was large because we had children. The other part of our group only had tiny rooms and lots of guests were complaining of room size. You can however be upgraded at a cost! The Valleta restaurant had poor waiter service. The tables were not cleaned of empty plates after courses and often there was dirty dishes etc. The food was good but repetitive. The building work can be noisy in the mornings as vehicles start approaching loading off building supplies around 5-6am!(if at front of hotel). There was lots of dust during our stay and guests in the 5 star block were also complaining as some of the rooms actually face the builders. Be careful, what you see in the brochure is not always what you get! The spa facilities are fantastic and the classes held at the hotel are good. We did have a lovely stay even with the noisy building work and minor complaints about the mini bar and tea and coffee facilities not being topped up and lack of towels for a family of 4. If its nightlife you are after this hotel is a no no, there is nothing for teenagers to do in the evenings and nothing for young children. The entertainment is around the cocktail bar and comprises of people singing (some good singers and some not so good). If you want to eat in lovely surroundings use the garden restaurants or the healthy eating but book in advance as they are often full or do what we did and eat in them at lunchtime when you don't have to book a table. The free cruises that often are part of the holiday are often full and on the big boats/ferry's not very comfortable. I would recommend upgrade the boat trip and really enjoy the trip on 1 of the fantastic boats on offer. All the trips end up at the Blue Lagoon, which is lovely, but with a very tiny beach and is very very busy. This hotel does have a lot to offer if you use the facilities available. I would recommend it for romantics and couples or groups of friends. It is ok for children but definitely not child orientated. I think older children would be bored, especially in the evenings. Swimming with the dolphins is a must. It is costly but something you will never forget. Once the building work is complete next door and the minor hiccups ironed out this hotel will be fantastic. Superior rooms, which are small should only be classed as standard! They are only superior because of the view not on the room.

“I went to the Fortina Hotel during April for five days...”

written by Bunnydip on 11/07/2005

I went to the Fortina Hotel during April for five days and totally loved the place. I treated my partner to a Spa Room which had the most wonderful facilities - in the bathroom there is a detox capsule called a Dermalife Machine, a double shower, a therapeutic bath and a sauna for two! In the large bedroom there is a superb Jacuzzi for two people which overlooked the balcony (very romantic) The food in this Hotel is superb with so many GOOD restaurants to choose from we were spoilt for choice (Indian, Thai, Chinese, Bistro, Italian, dietary, and s lovely self-service huge restaurant catering for everyone's taste - well done to the Chefs at this great resort. All the staff are very friendly and the place is so very clean. The hotel also includes trips on boats and sightseeing trips around the island, all included in the price! We must admit we have never been to an all-inclusive Resort which is so much value. My partner loved the Spa and all the number of treatments and even managed to tempt me into the Spa Sante which you can stay in for three hours and sample the treatments at your own leisure which appealed to me. She is now pestering me to return and hopefully she won't read this as I have just booked 10 days at the end of August for our Anniversary - well worth it.

“I went to the Hotel Fortina in June and loved it so...”

★★★★★

written by Bunnydip on 10/07/2005

I went to the Hotel Fortina in June and loved it so much that I have booked to return in September! I stayed in a sea-view room with fantastic views across to Valletta and over the harbour; there was so much to see day and night. The Staff in this Hotel are so helpful and very friendly; nothing is ever too much trouble. I loved the food with a choice of all these following Restaurants; Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Italian, Brassiere, healthy diet restaurant food and even the normal large self-service restaurant is so good. I spoke to a lot of regular visitors who just love this restaurant because of the wide choice on the menu. My favourite had to be the Chinese/Thai though, overlooking the Garden pool. I must congratulate the Executive Chef who apparently, in the Spa rooms with private swimming pools, will even come and cook on the BBQ poolside! I enjoyed the swimming pools and the fantastic new Spas where I did over indulge with so many treatments including my favourite the Thallasso treatments with Algae. The Manager showed me around the new hotel rooms in the Tower and the Spa bedrooms (wow) and I have booked to return in September with a friend and have booked a Tower room with our own private hot tub on the balcony! The hotel is situated in Sliema and four minutes outside the hotel there are lovely Bars and Shops. The Hotel even includes in the all-inclusive price boat trips, tours and ferry trips to Valletta.

The spa in the Hotel Fortina is great there are many services available but they do come at a quite expensive price. The hotel is situated on the harbour where the boat trips are run from, although the view from the hotel is lovely you can't really swim in the sea as it looks polluted. The entertainment at the hotel is okay but if you want lively nightlife I recommend you get the bus to ST. Julian's bay, where you can find many clubs and bars.

Sliema, Hotel Fortina - Booked some months previous and when arrived had no details of the treatments we had booked. Took over a day to be sorted.

Car that collected us from airport looked like it was about to fall apart.

Some of the equipment was not working for various treatments.

Cannot agree with Gayna. Firstly she praises the treatments, scores it well on value for money but then doesn't recommend it.
I travel to the Fortina twice yearly. Would never stay anywhere else on the island. Their cuisine is 5 star plus, facilities excellent, the spas are a dream and the views are simply majestic.
Sorry Gayna, I really think your rating is totally poor.
Will be back at Fortina on 15th June 2004.

I have stayed at the Fortina on many occassions and cannot praise the Staff enough and the fantstic choice of excellent food. The Spa is wonderful and so relaxing and I actually have twice stayed in one of the new Spa Suites which are out of this world sheer luxury. I would recommend this Hotel to friends anytime and often have sent many friends over to the Fortina and they have all come back saying they will return.
I would agree that the transport included from the Airport could be better but I always hire a taxi through the Hotel before I arrive at the Airport.

Have to say I thoroughly enjoyed a week at the Fortina July 2004 and found the staff to be extremely helpful, choice of food very good, particularly the Garden Restaurant, dining al fresco. Fab view overlooking the harbour from the balcony and excellent spa facilities, although not cheap, thoroughly enjoyable. For a relaxing week in the sun I would not hesitate to recommend it.
