The Flymo Garden Vac - XLB 250 unit was obviously designed as a blower. I appreciate it is a low cost unit. It was easy enough to start providing the instructions were adhered to. But I will not be replacing it with another.

I like you would be inclined towards a similar conclusion, but like the service mechanic I'm aware of the possible effect of incorrect mixture. I mixed the fuel and tended to err in favour of too much oil. That's why I added the mechanic's comments. He didn't indicate that the bore was badly damaged and would have re-built the engine if I'd paid for it. I never saw the dismantled engine they phoned me with the estimate. I have written to Flymo asking for their comments.

I got a Flymo Garden Vac - it's the XLB 250 Twister blower model. The shredder doing a good job, I mean the bag fills very fast but hey what can you do. And you will get a wet bum when picking up wet leaves as the bag is not waterproof!
Vibrates quites a bit
Obvious design flaw having to screw the blower together due to vibration, quick fix put a screw in the package (mine didn't come with screw)
Can only be started on half choke, not a problem but no point in trying to start on full choke as you will be there all day pulling.
Despite these things it works well overall

overall the Flymo XLB 250 Twister Blower Vac is a lot more fun than sweeping, but it leaks oil all down one side? i agree the sreading element is not much like 16 leaves to 1 at all more like just the leaf squashed a bit

Purchased Flymo XLB 250 in Nov 2007, developed fault with in 2 months, noisy and slow starter re-coil. Replacement received.
Replacement developed the same fault Aug 2008 and would not restart easily once warm.
Returned and full credit received.

Very misleading about the shredding! If you just want a powerful vacuum then it is good. I was hoping for longer times between emptying bag and to be able to empty it straight onto compost heap.

If a piston and bore are, as you say- welded together then by that evidence alone it is a symptom of incorrect fuel/oil mixture and not a manufacturing fault.

How a so-called expert can state it isn't anything other than under oiling defied belief.
