I have had this unit for a couple of years now and it generally works fine. Route planning can be a little odd at times but with common sense it is ok. It has a tendancy to crash sometimes and needs rebooting. On a couple of occassions I had to reload the operting system. Not easy when travelling! Because it has no memory card, the maps no longer fit as one piece. You now have to load Europe in 4 sections. No greast issue but the provision of a card slot would have saved all the hassle.

I bought mine in June 2009 because it had Europe on it. Until I took up the offer to renew my subscription all updates had worked fine then.... The day after paying the £35 I did what it told me to do - an update. It crashed and eventually after many emails and following their advice it no longer connected to my PC and was useless. They did take it back and replace it. The new one required an update - back to square 1. THe current version of the West European zone map will not download on to it 2GB is not enough. It is supposed to have the whole of Europe not just a bit!

A waste of £200 and a further waste of £35 for the update service

Would never recommend a Tom Tom to anyone. My One XL looses it's charge and shuts down without warning. Updates have now removed UK postcodes and won't accept my activation code. In Ireland the maps were so poor sometimes it showed us driving over fields! Never again!

This is the second Tom Tom device I have purchased and very disappointed. I have similar experiences to other uses. The device is unreliable, requires re-booting and lots of fiddling to get it to work each time I get it out to use. I have got into the habit of printing maps to take with me because it fails at the worst possible time. Very frustrating

My tomtom xl live is my second tom tom.It had to be changed once and I had a lot of trouble and many emails in order to set it up. It quite frequently reboots for no apparent reason. Recently I have had two days when it started out OK then just refused to navigate. Every time I wanted to navigate to an address (postcode, intersection, street and number, city centre) it just froze and then rebooted. So in the middle of a day out and a working day I had to rely on my I phone. I might just have to revert to buying maps again. Don't buy a tomtom, it is too unreliable and lets you down without warning, usually when you most need it.

The device is terrible. The device is new but the maps are very inaccurate so so I tried to update the device online but of course their update/installation of their device management program sucks as well. This is the 2nd one I have bought (US and Europe) so I must be the sucker.

Originaly bought the ONE XL many years ago and had a generaly good experience with it, but when I recently tried to update with new map configuration everything changed. System started with big red 'X' on the screen, contacted via website and found the answer or so I thought. When I did mange to get the ONE XL past this everything had been deleted, so following instructions from their website formated the TOM TOM(which took 12 hrs!!) but no avail. Eventually e-mailed and rang TOM TOM who advised me to by another UK and Ireland map @£40 and re-install as the original backups were not on my computer. I now need to re-format my ONE XL (another 12hr wait) and hope that this works.

written by on 15/07/2010

This tomtom does not recognise the congestion zone in London. I don't think it warns you about any toll roads coming up either. It crashes a lot and was returned to amazon & I got my money back. I stupidly bought a more expensive model on the recommendation of tomtom & bought it directly from them. It also crashes & doesn't have enough space for the map. No expansion slot either. Although they have a 30 day map guarantee, they will not refund me for the unit. If you are going to buy one, do not go directly to tomtom. You will not get your money back if you find any faults within 7 days.

written by HAgadget on 10/07/2010

When purchased new you are allowed to download the latest maps just once. The download is quite slow, taking almost an hour, even though I have a fast broadband connection, the Tom Tom server timed out five times, sometimes after only a few minutes. Fortunately the download can be resumed without starting at the beginning. Data transfer is slow to and from the unit, full backups taking over an hour even with USB2. Route calculations take a long time, I would say at least ten times as long as my previous Navman unit. The display isn't particularly bright, especially in sunny conditions but it has good resolution, and the manufacturers have used this to reduce the size of the lettering making some of it too small to quickly and easily read. It has some very useful features like written map instructions, lane indication and zoom in and out on a planned route. It seems a well constructed unit and the routes it chooses seem very good.

I purchased my tom tom in 2007 l paid £230 and l was expecting a trouble free sat nav from one of the market leaders. How wrong could l be, when l first got it it had a full uk post code system installed, then as advised by tom tom to keep hooking up to their web site for the latest updates, it was during one of these times they deleted the post code option without any warning. The device keeps crashing and only worked correctly for a short while. l have spent more time emailing tom tom informing them of yet another problems than l have driving.

“I bought mine when it was bundled with TomTom's...”

★★☆☆☆

written by geomowat on 02/08/2009

I bought mine when it was bundled with TomTom's RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver as the 'Traffic' model. Initial item exchanged as it did not work at all from new. So far, I have only used this Satnav in Scotland, England and Wales.

Good Points: Good size screen, clear display, traffic receiver (subscription-free version) seems to work equally well on several cars and can offer useful extra information. When it is giving one a plausible route, then it does so clearly and in a way that is easy to follow and when one ignores a crazy suggestion, then it seems to recalculate the route pretty quickly.

Poor Points: A disappointingly long list, alas. Claims to be able to update the original map in the first 30 days via an Apple Mac computer -- many attempts to do so did not, despite being told that the mapping was now up to date (or the 'new' map is lousy information that has speed limits at least two years out of date and cameras of a similar age not listed). Awful manual that tells one very little and the somewhat better on-line information is useless when out and about unless one has a laptop with mobile broadband with one. Difficult to tell if the corrections downloadable under the 'home' site correct anything as the maps seem so unreliable. Also, I am not confident that the downloadable TomTom software for Apple computers works at all well.

Has some very peculiar ideas about the fastest routes, e.g., going from West London to Durham the other day it wanted me to set out on the M42 to Oxford and then when I went up the A1(M), it kept trying to persuade me to go over to the M1 instead, curiously when going south on the M1, it kept trying to persuade me to use the A1!

On other routes it is not very accurate, 'you have reached your destination' in relation to my mother's house is a good half a mile away on another road and my own is a similar distance away on an unclassified road.

After it has calculated a route, it would appear that one can only inspect it before setting out by going through the entire route (albeit at a faster than real-time speed). This is really useless if one is in London and wants to see which alternative it might be suggesting for the part through the Highlands of Scotland.

Fitting the mini USB plug into the XL's socket is far from easy and this is particularly difficult with the RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver fitted as this aerial/lead is fixed to the windscreen and dashboard. Pitiful battery life of less than an hour from fully charged.

Appalling Feature: On at least half a dozen occasions, it has told me to make an illegal turn left or right against a 'no right/left turn' sign into a one-way road and none of these have concerned the map being up to date as these restrictions have been in place for at least a decade.

I have to say that the TomTom ONE XL Europe is a disappointment and if I were ever to purchase another Satnav, then I would try one from another manufacturer and want to borrow a friend's one to see if it were any better before buying another.

I also have a Tomtom XL. When it worked it was ideal but has now died after a few months of use. What good is any device if it is unreliable, as unfortunately these seem to be.

written by JBCOOK on 06/03/2009

Straight out the box - launched the device and went through the setup steps > selected language, time & voice preference all fine.
Then it fails with the "no maps found errors"

Having spent £130 on the device I would expect better.
I would expect it to work straight out the box.

As an IT consultant / network architect I'd hope that I know a bit about configuring new hardware........ the Tomtom XL has failed at the first hurdle... less than impressed. Following advice on various forums
Rebooted the satnav
logged into the Tomtom members area
disconnected the device from my pc
rebooted the satnav

It's still not working

A real headache after purchasing an upgrade French map. The download caused the Tom Tom to "loop" and not work correctly.
Tom Tom sent long complicated emails to help sort it out. Ended up storing all info on SD cards so as not to cause further problems. The lesson is they are fine out of the box new don't try upgrading unless you have hours and more cash to spare sorting out problems.

“After a recent software upgrade, my TomTom One...”

★★★★☆

written by TheReaderman on 29/08/2008

After a recent software upgrade, my TomTom One requires a reset before it will connect to my computer, as long as I have the 4 digit security code set. TomTom Support tried to fix it via e-mail. Their e-mails are messy and difficult to read. Then they asked me to send it in. I got it back with a message to say that they couldn't find the fault. The screen protector had been removed and the software reinstalled. No attempt had been made to test it as I had to reconfigure it before using it. When I tried to connect to my computer I had the same problem as before. When I contacted TomTom support again, they wanted me to call them during business hours with the TomTom connected to my PC and ready to work. As a working person, this wasn't an option and I've given up on getting it fixed. As a person whose sense of direction is not good (I get lost in supermarkets!), satellite navigation is a boon. Other than the problem connecting to the PC, my experience with the One XL Britain and Ireland has been good. My wife can relax a bit more in the car.
