I bought mine when it was bundled with TomTom's RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver as the 'Traffic' model. Initial item exchanged as it did not work at all from new. So far, I have only used this Satnav in Scotland, England and Wales.

Good Points: Good size screen, clear display, traffic receiver (subscription-free version) seems to work equally well on several cars and can offer useful extra information. When it is giving one a plausible route, then it does so clearly and in a way that is easy to follow and when one ignores a crazy suggestion, then it seems to recalculate the route pretty quickly.

Poor Points: A disappointingly long list, alas. Claims to be able to update the original map in the first 30 days via an Apple Mac computer -- many attempts to do so did not, despite being told that the mapping was now up to date (or the 'new' map is lousy information that has speed limits at least two years out of date and cameras of a similar age not listed). Awful manual that tells one very little and the somewhat better on-line information is useless when out and about unless one has a laptop with mobile broadband with one. Difficult to tell if the corrections downloadable under the 'home' site correct anything as the maps seem so unreliable. Also, I am not confident that the downloadable TomTom software for Apple computers works at all well.

Has some very peculiar ideas about the fastest routes, e.g., going from West London to Durham the other day it wanted me to set out on the M42 to Oxford and then when I went up the A1(M), it kept trying to persuade me to go over to the M1 instead, curiously when going south on the M1, it kept trying to persuade me to use the A1!

On other routes it is not very accurate, 'you have reached your destination' in relation to my mother's house is a good half a mile away on another road and my own is a similar distance away on an unclassified road.

After it has calculated a route, it would appear that one can only inspect it before setting out by going through the entire route (albeit at a faster than real-time speed). This is really useless if one is in London and wants to see which alternative it might be suggesting for the part through the Highlands of Scotland.

Fitting the mini USB plug into the XL's socket is far from easy and this is particularly difficult with the RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver fitted as this aerial/lead is fixed to the windscreen and dashboard. Pitiful battery life of less than an hour from fully charged.

Appalling Feature: On at least half a dozen occasions, it has told me to make an illegal turn left or right against a 'no right/left turn' sign into a one-way road and none of these have concerned the map being up to date as these restrictions have been in place for at least a decade.

I have to say that the TomTom ONE XL Europe is a disappointment and if I were ever to purchase another Satnav, then I would try one from another manufacturer and want to borrow a friend's one to see if it were any better before buying another.

Straight out the box - launched the device and went through the setup steps > selected language, time & voice preference all fine. Then it fails with the "no maps found errors"Having spent £130 on the device I would expect better.I would expect it to work straight out the box.As an IT consultant / network architect I'd hope that I know a bit about configuring new hardware........ the Tomtom XL has failed at the first hurdle... less than impressed.

A real headache after purchasing an upgrade French map. The download caused the Tom Tom to "loop" and not work correctly.
Tom Tom sent long complicated emails to help sort it out. Ended up storing all info on SD cards so as not to cause further problems.
The lesson is they are fine out of the box new don't try upgrading unless you have hours and more cash to spare sorting out problems.

After a recent software upgrade, my TomTom One requires a reset before it will connect to my computer, as long as I have the 4 digit security code set. TomTom Support tried to fix it via e-mail. Their e-mails are messy and difficult to read. Then they asked me to send it in. I got it back with a message to say that they couldn't find the fault. The screen protector had been removed and the software reinstalled. No attempt had been made to test it as I had to reconfigure it before using it. When ...

Very disappointed with POI's on my Tom Tom One. We used integrated model on a BMW hire car in Germany 2 years ago (don't know model and it gave out all sorts of information. It was like a personal tour guide.
We hoped to be able to bring this on holidays and look up nearest hotel & restaurants etc. According to Tom Tom XL Europe our nearest hotel is 80 kms! Our nearest Police Station is 76kms!

Very happy with the Tom Tom One - it's my 3rd sat nav system, and I would have to say the best despite stiff competition from a PDA running Navigon 5 software.
Straight out of the box this is a very easy system to set up and use. The size of screen is a huge help (although I obviously don't use it whilst moving, it's nice to be able to achieve most of what you want to do with 2 or 3 key presses at traffic lights or whatever), and route re-calculation is very quick. Satellite acquisition is far a ...

I purchased my Tom Tom One XL Europe in August 2007. I have previously owned a Navman iCN650 that cost 3 to 4 times as much 3-4 years ago!

I decided to upgrade my Satellite Navigation system just before a holiday touring through France, Germany, Switzerland and Italy. I very quickly got to grips with the user friendly touch screen user interface. I took my trusty old Navman along for the ride - just in case the Tom Tom let me down but I needn't have worried - the Tom Tom performed perfectly.

This unit is very good, shop around for the best price...loads of deals and great saveings. No fiddley buttons to press and the information is clear...if missed turning very quick on re-map.
Speed camara alert very good and draws your attention to the fact that your speed has climbed and you the chance to address before you get the penalty.

Before a Tom Tom ONE XL Europe, I had tried a cheap CarTrek (also reviewed). The Tom Tom shows how it should be done. I've tested on roads that I know, to see if it would take me the way I normally go, and I've tested it in the very heart of London when I had no idea where to go. It passed both with flying colours. The maps and instructions are clear and accurate and the speed camera info may come in handy. It's so easy to use, with no confusing menus. Everything works how you'd expect. The map ...
