“I love Alfa Romeo”

★★★★★

written by garycole on 02/09/2014

Just recently I had the chance to drive an Alfa for the first time when a friend of mine bought 159 1.9 JTDM. I loved it! It has excellent performance on the road and generally it's a real pleasure to drive it.

“Nearly a great car.”

★★★★☆

written by Santafe2000 on 07/04/2012

I'm just about to part with my 159 after nearly four years of virtually trouble free motoring and to be honest I'm sorry to see it go and hope the B Class I've changed it for is as good. I clocked up over 100k miles and the car never let me down once. Servicing was reasonable though I used an Alfa specialist rather than the main dealer. When the warranty ran out I serviced it myself and it was a nice car to work on. Alfa clearly still have a couple of issues to sort out though. The paintwork is my overall gripe. The paint is incredibly thin and soft so these cars are prone to stone chips on an unprecedented level, especially on the leading edge of the rear arches and rear doors but the bonnet also takes a hammering. They're fine once someone applies a decent coat of paint. Water pumps were a known failure point, as are the power steering fluid reservoirs. The internal filter breaks off in these and blocks oil flow to the power steering pump. A reservoir and hydraulic oil change cures the noisy power steering pump which resulted. EGR valve was replaced at 100k but they clog up sooner if you're not doing motorway miles as do the DPF's in the exhaust. Again, no problem with mine due to high motorway miles. The leather interior and dash are outstanding and in general terms after nearly 4 years of ownership I still think its the best looking car on the road in its class. The 1.9 diesel engine is a fabulous unit, mine averaged 40 to 45 mpg and felt as good after 100k as the day I bought it, I also never had to top up engine oil between services as you do with a lot of diesel engines. A fabulous car but Alfa need to get better quality control on some of the parts they source, wing mirrors started to dechrome after two years and the Front Alfa badge needs changing after 4 years, add that to a faulty battery at 6 months, known issues with water pumps and fluid reservoirs and you start to form a picture which is a shame because the 159 is a fantastic car that was oh so nearly great. Depreciation should have been far better than it actually is on these cars because ownership of this particular model in the range is a relatively trouble free and enjoyable affair.

“This is my first Alfa Romeo, bought for me by the...”

This is my first Alfa Romeo, bought for me by the company I work for. All my friends around me were trying to warn me off it due to concerns with reliability etc. Let's get one thing straight, if you are a petrol head like me, at some point in your life you have to own/drive an Alfa! Regarding reliability (after 11,000 miles) - 100% perfect.
For the weight of the car the 1.9 JTDm engine goes quite well, it's never going to break any records and as such the outside appearance of the car shouts "get out of my way I'm coming through" while on the inside everything is very relaxed and hushed. The standard audio (mine has the "Blue & Me" system fitted) is superb, a BOSE upgrade is available but not required! The quality of the paintwork is spot on as is the interior fit and finish, with real Aluminium on the door panels and centre console (not imitation like other premium brands use). The only downside so far are the fuel economy (Average 40 - 42 mpg) manufacturer claims 48 on the combined cycle and the interior space for odds and ends. The major plus is its an Alfa Romeo and they are like hens teeth on the road. Compare that to the 3 series/A4/X-Type and you have a car that has the interior finish of the Audi, road presence that betters the BMW and exclusivity of a Rolls-Royce (at the moment).
