Bought in late 2015 for £4,000 (independent garage) with 79,000 miles on the clock. The Limited body kit and interior look great and the whole thing was in good condition. It had a recent cam belt change and MOT, although this picked up 'rusty front springs' and some brake attention was required. The handbrake isn't good and the whole rear brake assembly needs replacing. It's a crude but simple to install system with only manual handbrake adjustment (at each brake drum!). Recently got a full set of Goodyear Wrangler tyres for £350 fitted too. Shop around for parts to save money. I've not taken it off-road yet, but in low-traction road conditions it seems good. There's a rumbling noise coming from underneath in 4WD mode which needs investigation (I suspect it's something to do with the half-shafts or transfer box). Runs fine in two wheel drive mode, but still getting a bit of a 'metallic' noise at over 30mph. Fuel economy is relatively poor (20-25mpg average, 30mpg at a push). We knew this prior to purchase though. It's a heavy old truck at 2 metric tons and it's not quick off the mark, but we didn't buy it to win races! Purchased mostly for size, comfort and the 'go anywhere' ability (and for the name too!). The Limited trim has leather interior, heated front seats, parking sensors, cruise control, A/C, CD stereo, full airbags, roof bars (side runners) and it also came with a new front chrome bar and side-step running bars. Only had it a few months and love it to bits, despite little things needing to be done. If you do your own servicing, enjoy being 'involved' in driving a big vehicle and love the 'chunkiness' of these big American SUV's (but in a slightly more compact package), then this is definitely for you! PLUS: Sturdy, strong off-road capabilities, comfort, fun factor, great heritage, good looking machine, 'commanding' driving position, good all-round views, the feel of a 'big' truck without actually being too oversized, boot/load space, a genuine pleasure to drive. MINUS: Thirsty, needs looking after, some areas of finish can deteriorate with age, braking systems could be better, not quick, heavy.

owned mine now for a while , bought it from a small garage and it came with service history which reports very little problems in its entire life. its been used for towing caravens etc and came fitted with attachments for such like. engine is to some people a bit noisy but i actually like the noise it makes, its reassuringly grunty on take off, and settles down to a good sound when driven on open roads. instruments are clear ans well set out but the display above the drivers head could do with more set up options for my liking. standard sound system sounds good too. other things like steering, brakes etc feel solid and responsive though the suspension does feel a tiny bit harsh at times for a 4x4. it currently is averaging 25 mpg but i have not been using it for long trips of late and its 4x4 so people shouldnt expect economy car fuel usage! all in all i really enjoy driving the jeep.

bought a brand new cherokee on new years eve when the bad weather started, this car is fantastic in bad weather ,never a problem. i have had a range rover before which was great but fell to bits eventaully and for me the jeep compares really well, apart from the latest RR which is for a pecieved lifestyle not for offroad. looks- i love the look of this car, far better than the previous model. comfort, superb leather and better back support than my jaguar, plenty of seat options. power - plenty to overtake and axcelerate but its not super fast (its a 4x4), adequate. handling - people have slagged it off? no diffrence to anything i have driven, no problems, great vision, fine.
quality inside - ok dashboard losts of plastic but have you been in a ford ghia? they have similar amounts of plas..practical and good enough.dials are easy to see. practical - when you bring the seats down (all except the driver) its brillant. gor sat nav, excellent cd'dvd and £18,600 i have been extremely pleased with it - fule consumption is average , i get around 28 -30 at a push compared to a range rover thats good.

I have owned the jeep 2.5crd ltd since 2004 and have had nothing but trouble with it. since 2004 during the manufactureres warranty period i have had in excess of £18000 worth of work carried out these include new engine, turbo, clutch slave and master cylinder, front prop shaft, new bearings in transfer box and new bearings in rear diff, 2 sets of alloy wheels due to corrosion.
it is currently 2 years out of the warranty period now and again i have a whining diff. At a cost of £650 the dealership replaced all the bearings again, the noise finally went. after doing just over 1000 miles the whining is back and the dealership in after more money to rectify the problem that they should have cured in the first place.
after contacting jeep uk after no joy with the dealership dispute, they basically told me that they were sorry to hear about all the trouble encountered with the vehicle but unfortunatley due to the age etc of it they would not pay to have it rectified, and washed there hands of the matter.
i know i have been very unlucky with this jeep, but its been well looked after and always dealership maintained from new and done very little work only doing 56000 miles the new engine being in at 24000! i dont think the vehicle is fit for purpose and as a designed rugged 4x4 i don't think the cherokee makes the final cut!
Customer service of jeep dealerships also doesn't quite cut it either and trying to get major parts delivered also takes up to a couple of weeks.

The Jeep Cherokee 2.5 CRD is a good car with great towing ability
written by on 31/03/2009
Wife has used the Jeep Cherokee 2.5 CRD with no problems at all as a family car and loves it. good seating position for tall or short alike, lots of space compared to peer group vehicles. Good MPG. Jeep have a bad press - can be a bit expensive to service through main dealer.

I bought my Jeep Cherokee 2.5 CRD from Meridien Majestic
We Part-ex'd our PT Cruiser and purchased a 3.7 petrol Cherokee.
Incredibly nimble on the country roads and more than a match for most cars on a motor way.
The Jeep is strong and will gives you a secure and safe feel. While also being very comfortable, the leather heated seats sooth worries away, if you are stressed, take it for a drive, it will make you smile.
Now considering its size and weight you will get on average 21mpg in combined and 28mpg on a run of a couple hundred miles. The auto box comes with a Overdrive lockout (or the dump fuel now button as I call it) meaning the Jeep becomes even more assertive - in this mode expect to see alot less distance for that gallon of fuel, but for every downside there is a good one, the smile it leaves on your face.
The only downside is the cost of parts. I recently had my driver mirror vandalised in the company car park... £250..ouch..
And in its 22k service they said the jeep had to have new discs as it uses discs every 20k being a 3.7 auto. (a comment I will be taking up with Jeep UK)
As an ex-car trader, I can say without doubt this is the 4x4 you must try.

I wouldn't normally go for this type of car but after having a test drive, the Jeep Cherokee 2.5 seemed that this was a different driving experience to any other I had before. It feels strong and no nonsense. Sounds like a tank and you can hear the responsive road when you rev it up. The road handling wasn't as sloppy as you'd expect for a larger car. It whips round corners quite nicely and feels really planted on the motorway. The main reason I like it is for the looks. Being younger than the usual 4x4 driver, I wanted a big strong car that looks trendy as well as capable. This has a sporty style and for the money, it looks very prestigious. I found that the driving position is optimized giving a good view of the road and leaving you feeling in control of the vehicle beneath you. Overall, it is a pleasing car to have and own and I have personally found the dealership customer service to be excellent (I use Meridian Majestic in Bournemouth/Poole). My tip is to buy one privately and you can't go wrong for the prices you pay. Use dealer services rather than private as they have apparently just realigned their pricing structure for the UK market and it works out much cheaper than ever before. Overall, I am very happy with it and I'll keep mine for a long time yet.

I'll start with the fact that my Cherokee 2.5crd LTd has been with the dealer for nearly a month due to some sort of fault causing it not to start.
No dashboard gauges or anything, just a series of lights terminating in the engine light coming on. The car turns over but the glow plugs will not heat and the engine will not start.
The car is 3 months outside it's manufacturers warranty, having been fully dealer serviced and only covered 32k miles in it's lifespan.
The car had to be towed into the dealership due to the problem above.
They told me that it would be a minimum of 3 days before it would get looked at.
When they looked at the car, they said it was the ECU that had failed and required replacing - cost £639. Asked when it would be ready and they said 3 days later. After trying to contact them on towards the end of business on the 3rd day and leaving no less than 4 messages for them to contact me I eventually got a call on the 4th day, they were still waiting on the part and that it would be there on the Friday. I had a weekend away booked with the wife from Friday morning and told them this. They said that it would be ready for 9:30am on Friday morning, cue 9:20am on the Friday and a phone call to inform me that it still wouldn't start with the new ECU on. Was told that a courtesy car wouldn't be available until Saturday.
Got a call on the Saturday (had to cancel the weekend away) to state that the courtesy car was ready at 11:45am, asked what time we could pick it up and they said that they shut at 12 noon, giving us a whole 15 mins to get there.
Went to pick the courtesy car up on the Monday and after telling them that I had sent a letter of complaint to their Main Office, the CS started to improve, showed us our car and introduced us to the engineer. They hadn't passed on a single detail to him about what I had left at the reception.
It is now 2 weeks later and we still have to ring them for updates as they still cannot find out what the problem is.
While we are still in command of the courtesy car it negates the issue somewhat, but I have free legal cover from my workplace and am getting them ready to fight my corner over this. I have neglected to tell them that I work for the local newspaper yet, be interesting to see their repsonse when I need to.

I agree totally with your review. I think jeep uk need to pull their fingers out on there franchised dealers customer service ethics.

i have owned a jeep 2.5 crd ltd 2004 from new and during the warranty period i have basically had around £18,000 pounds worth of work done to it so far. its been out of the warranty period for two years now and still the work continues and the pockets being emptied.

its currently on 56000 miles and has a whining diff, my local delearer replaced all the bearings in the rear diff at a cost to me of £650 and the noise went for 1000 miles and now it has returned and the delearer has refused to carry out repairs on the diff unless i pay for more parts again!

don't buy one! unless you have deep pockets. i know i've been very unlucky here with this one but the customer service was very poor and obviously looking at some of the other reviews on here there diagnostic/fault finding techniques aren't up to much either! the jeep i have obviously isn't fit for purpose, jeep uk think otherwise
written by chris6119 on 18/06/2006
My Jeep Cherokee developed a noise similar to that when a car exhaust is faulty. When taken to the Jeep garage, I was told it was a turbo clip failure. When I got the car back it was worse than ever, and I couldn't get it above 10 mph, with smoke billowing out the exhaust. Thousands of pounds later, the car does go but still smokes burnt oil from the exhaust. Taking into account the current value of the car minus the repair costs, it's worth about £400. Not good for a four year old car, that cost over £21,000 new.

This Jeep Cherokee 2.5 CRD 4x4 is the worst car I have ever had to drive along with the worst dealership support and Customer services that can be nothing short of rude and obnoxious. I am counting the days to when I can get rid of this car!
I had an accident, which was proven to be down to ABS failure at the rear sensors. This came up on the diagnostic check carried out by Jeep.
The car took 3 months to come out of the workshop which, on reflection, was the best period of ownership for me.
Even now, the fuel gauge gives out random empty readings, the courtesy lights come on and off at random and there is no way to shut the air vents down on the dash. If you have arthritis dont go near this car. You wont be able to move your right arm after a long journey. Also dont go through deep puddles at more than 10 mph. The water is directed straight at the screen and the wipers just cant cope.
Best of all Jeep appear to think the accident was my fault because I must have ignmored ABS warning lights. They were even cheeky enough to put this in writing on the statement of work done on the car which incidentaly took me weeks to get a copy after customer services refused to issue it. I had to make a case that it is a basic customer right to have a record of work carried out.
So, check the recall history, always keep some legwarmers handy to put over you arm, go easy on the accelerator in the wet, learn cadence braking, brush up on your skid control technique and you should look be able to look forward to a longer life which is free from unecessary dealer contact and customer services.

I have a Jeep Cherokee Liberty and find the dealer excellent.
A 4x4 will never handle like a car and any real wheel drive needs respect in the wet.
I have now done 35000 miles in my Jeep this year alone and she has never missed a beat off road and on the motorway, often used to pull boats off sand and gravel beaches and has been used to rescue the odd Freelander from the sea. I only wish I had bought one years ago!

Don't agree with any of these comments. Very happy with my Jeep Cherokee 2.5 CRD Manual. Looks good and drives well and is loads a fun.

I feel compelled to write and warn your readers about the situation I have found myself in. Even if this is a one off (and I doubt it is), it will make you think twice before buying.....
Four months ago I had an accident in my 13 month old Jeep Cherokee 2.5 CRD. Someone drove into the back of me, I accept these things happen but perhaps naively, I expected my car to be repaired by now.
However, I have now been waiting for Daimler Chrysler to supply one particular part to complete the repair of my Jeep for four months.
I have tried chasing the part through the local Chrysler dealership, I have also complained to the Customer Services department at Head Office, I have even tried writing to the MD of Daimler Chrysler UK, in the hope that someone senior might take some action. Can you believe my first approach to the MD was completely ignored, after the second time of writing all I have achieved is a couple of apologetic phone calls from the Customer Services department but still no part to repair my car!!
Anyone who owns a motorcar, i.e. most of the population, would surely be horrified to learn of my experience. I feel duty bound to warn potential customers to think twice before buying any model of car from the Daimler Chrysler organisation, given that the attitude towards customers, even at the most senior level, implies that it is acceptable for a car to be off the road for such a long time.

Some good points made, some kind individual broke into my jeep 2.5 CRD and it took 6 weeks to get a window from Germany, When I bought the Jeep I had to wait 5 months for the fog lights to be fitted as Jeep had run out and as it was an extra on the sports model they had none in stock. But saying that its been a great car and fun to drive the service team have always been helpful and I would reccomend people to buy one.

Hi,
I have recently purchased a 2001 2.5 crd sport.
It has covered 36,000 mls. I am told it has a turbo which is intercooled and it has no power under 1500 rpm. Is this normal and can anything be done to improve this as it could be dangerous pulling away from junctions.
Comments please.

They just started selling them in the US and I got one. I like the way it rides and it has been starting in cold weather so I like that too.

I was reading the owner's manual today and found I am supposed to use synthetic oil in the beast. Ouch! That stuff is pricey. I got a diesel for economics and this puts some of that out the window. However, the manual says I only need change the oil every 6,000 miles so maybe it's not all bad.

I always like to get a repair manual for the vehicles I purchase. I haven't found any for this on the internet.

I don't like your parts story. Parts problems is one of the reasons I didn't go Japanese or European. Although, the motor is made in Italy, the sticker said it had 60 percent US content. Jeep has a lot of dealerships in the US, so I thought parts availability would be good.

I had a Discovery 300TDi that was terrible! It turned out in the end that some clown had fitted a new timing belt and had got the timing out. The valves had made dents in the pistons and it was a slug. Once fixed with new pistons, new head and valves, new uprated radiator and new timing belt kit it was excellent.
Had someone fitted a new belt to your truck? There are a LOT of cack-handed mechanics around these days.
