Good Points: Very easy to get started in DSLR photography with this camera. Nice quality 'feel' (nicer than Canon). Great battery life. Better-than-average kit lens. Very nice LCD screen.
Bad Points: Kit lens is great for close-ups, not so hot for landscapes. Will not drive older Nikon Autofocus lenses. Any lenses you get for this, should say 'AF-S' on the description.
General comments: This camera is pitched at new DSLR users, and it hits the mark. It is quite small, light and very easy to use right out of the box.
There is plenty of flexibility to get as down-and-dirty as you want with manual exposures, aperture and shutter settings, white balance, etc etc. Or, you just switch it on and snap away. Pop in a 2Gb card, set the camera to Medium JPEG and you'll get over 1,000 pictures.
Image quality is great - do not be put off by the fact that it is "only" 6 Megapixels. Nikon know how to get the very best out of the 6 MP sensor used in the D40, and its plenty good enough.
Battery life is really, really good.

After lots of looking around and umm'ing and rr'ing I decided to splash out on a Nikon D40.
I must just say this... if you're looking for a DSLR camera you will not buy better than the D40. I've never used a DSLR before and am incredibly impressed by the ease of use this model offers.
Value for money simply cannot be beaten, for a start.
Picture quality? Well! Having had a Canon Ixus 55 compact which takes some excellent images I thought the D40 would be hard pressed to have a huge diff ...
