Good Points: Liquid-cooling, double disk, and by far the best 50cc 2stroke engine ever made imo.
Bad Points: Bad headlights and rearbrake.
General comments: The Gilera SMT 50 is really great, well-build bike that starts up every morning. I have never had such a reliable 2-stroker in my life.

I had a Gilera SMT 50 for a year and it was definitely a decent bike, especially for learners. It's upright, it's comfortable and it's not so fast that you'll end up killing yourself, in fact there's not even enough power in it to high side it.
If you have it unrestricted this thing will do 50mph roughly, and is pretty fun on the corners, you can have it full throttle around and corner and not have to worry about the back end slipping out.
On a 2 stroke 50cc engine problems are going to be plent ...

Great 1st bike. The Gilera SMT50 is very fast. I get about 70mph on a flat, beats any other 50cc out there if you ride it properly. If you have never had a geared bike before it takes sometime to get used to it but once you get the hang of it you will have a a good ride.

Yes ...would definitely recommend to people, but if you want to take it off-road I would get the RCR, not the Gilera SMT, or if you got money get some nice crosser tyres either way same bike but I would put a sports exhaust on ... am hoping to put one on mine soon.....

My Gilera SMT 50 (same as the Gilera RCR 50 but with road wheels and tyres) is fantastic! I have derestricted it and have added a Leovinci v6 exhaust. The pull is good and the powerband on each gear is great! The handling is second to none and the bike is at it's best on small, windy backroads. I have been clocked at 67 mph but that was with the wind behind me, it cruises well at 55-60 mph. The best 50cc on the market!
