Good Points: Smaller ship 55,451 tons and only 1,258 passengers, making it easier to get on and off the ship for the shore excursions.
Larger Staterooms than that of your average cruise ship, with a Deluxe Verandah Suite of more than 550 sq' (including verandah) and lots of storage space.

Bad Points: Waited until 5:00 PM for our luggage to arrive at our suite.
Assigned to a dinner table for 10 guests, making it difficult to carry on a conversation with most of the table mates.
Absolutely hated the smoking that was permitted in the lounge and common areas, making us wonder if the Holland America management are the only people on this planet that are not aware that second-hand smoke is equally dangerous and offensive to others.

General comments: On the MS Maasdam August 18, 2007, we did the 7-Day Canada/New England Cruise out of Boston, heading to Montreal, with shore excursions at Bar Harbor, Halifax, Sydney, Charlottetown, a cruise of the Saguenay Fjord, a stop in Quebec City and the final port-of-call in Montreal.
Boarding and debarkation were very organized and went very well.
The staff members at every level were friendly and efficient.
The Maasdam is an older ship (launched around 1993) but appeared to be well-maintained and very clean.
The meals in the dining roon were exceptional.
The average age seemed to be a bit older (probably around 65 years) so if you're looking for a "love-boat-party-time" atmosphere, this is not it.. we found more wheelchairs than baby strollers on deck. However, if you want quiet elegance, this is a great cruise ship.
