Good Points: Lily is a very intelligent Patterdale Terrier, 20 months old and black. She is small, very fast and very easy to train. She likes most people, other dogs, cats, everyone. She is just a dog who is loves life - and thinks everyone loves her back. She is gentle and will take treats from your fingers very carefully.

Bad Points: When young had a tendency to jump and attempt to bite - especially faces. She never did bite anyone though, and was playing rather than being aggressive. She can get out of her collar and do a runner - but comes back. She can be 'deaf' when she wants to, especially when it is time to walk back.

General comments: I chose a Patterdale, because they don't shed as much as other breeds, and don't have that 'doggy' smell, even though they are outdoors dogs. I found Lily very easy to train, not with shouting or hitting, but not with many treats either, she just has the will to please. I also chose a girl, because they don't bark constantly, and seem to be very loyal and caring. Once Lily realised that she was not 'Alpha', in fact she comes after the children and cats, she was happy. She has been spayed, even though she never had to fight off any male attention through the 2 seasons she had. She tends to treat male dogs with superior disdain, but loves playing with other female dogs. I made sure she was socialised with other dogs, and people from the beginning. I am the lucky one having such a loyal 'shadow' who chooses to live in our mad house.

Overall, Patterdales are a great family pet if the right training is given. We have kept Patterdales for many years, with babie's, small children and all manner of other animals. They are lively and funny little dogs with bags of personality and lots of love to give, they are extremely loyal to their family. They adapt well to most environments so long as they are given plenty of attention and exercise. You can train them to do almost anything because they love to please. We have introduced new dogs ...

Hi My name is Tinka the patterdale and I am 2 and a half years old and live in northampton. I can do lots of tricks including "mummy kiss kiss" & "Speeeak" (I am actually human but my parents dont know that, they are stupid). I just heard a rattle in the kitchen....must go, I might be in for a feed.

My patterdale was very strong willed as a pup, but was easily trained. A firm hand is needed as they are tough and physically strong for such a small dog. This caused a few ructions when he was younger, but has now settled down and behaves very well indeed. He is a lamb in the house, he's not a soppy dog but will come to you for affection when he wants it. Doesn't chew, scratch or dig, probably because he gets more exercise than he needs - he comes to work, fishing, cricket in fact everywhere. H ...

Our patterdale is perfect in every way apart from she hates all other dogs that she doesnt know with a vengance. Ive had some scary experiences, shes always on a lead but many people allow their dogs to run over to 'say hello' and jump over her....she will then go crazy, and will pin the other dog to the floor and no matter how hard I try I cannot pull her off. She hasnt done any damage and she would never bite a person or child but still, taking her out isnt a pleasurale experiance. Again, ...

Their intelligence is amazing and Im sure when I scold him and he barks back he is having the last word. I will be honest though Im a housewife and mostly at home. I think if left at home for long periods regularly boredom could set in as they are as I said before extrmely intelligent and need stimulation. I was also told to e careful with cats and other small animals but I have had no problem, In fact the cat rules and he is deaf. Rather funny when you see the cat chase the patterdale off.

My patterdale ''Tinka'' has bought so much happienss and fun into our lives! You can teach her almost anything with treats, she is very friendly with all dogs and children but not too sure about people with hats & beards (my fault. make sure they are introduced at a young age). I read negative comments about the breed prior to getting her and agree completley that if you train a dog well and are persistent - Your dogs behaviour will reflect that. I begrudge the comments I saw that tried to put ...

We adopted him when his owner died. We are used to Jack Russels and larger terriers and are fortunate to live in a working dog environment. He had been a house bound lap dog for 4 years but has taken to long walks and open terrain like he was working trained. Great dogs and we would sertanly consider fostering the breed. Recommend as a familly pet or working (is that unacceptable these days?) terrier.

A fireball of energy, who then collapses absolutely knackered. Overall, our Patterdale is a very good dog. He is non-violent, friendly and routine-based. He knows when it is time to go to bed etc. He is quite difficult to train, as independent type, but is easily shown who is the boss. He destroys toys, but not furniture. He has perfected a 'I'm feeling really guilty' look for whenever he has done anything bad, so it is hard to be angry with him for more than five seconds. There is really ve ...

If you have a Patterdale i think you need to show them who is boss so they look up to you that way they respact you more. Micky really looks up to my other half as he sees him as master.

I had my Patterdale dog at 7 weeks old. 7 weeks on and he has bought me more joy than i could ever of hoped for. Full of fun with a cheeky personality. First time off the lead on only his second walk he kept up for over 2 hours and never left our side despite every distraction you could of. Perfect in the house loves to be cuddled but more than happy to go on his bed. Only two problems will nip at the face when over excited and steals like a magpie then hides his treasure. I couldn't spend 1 day ...

We have 2 Patterdale Terriers. Harley I rescued in CA. He is black and smooth coated. He was about 2 when I got him. Davidson we got from a breeder at 14 weeks old. He is red and rough coated. They are such a joy to be with. They love to hunt on the farm behind our home and have cleaned out all the rabbits, moles, and field mice. I have never known a dog that can run so fast and for such a long distance. And boy can they jump. My boys are non-stop entertainment. I am currently looking ...

My Patterdale Terrier is almost 3 years old and we've had him since 6 weeks. I simply cannot imagine life without him - he's taken over our lives in so many ways. He hates the postmen and tears the letters out of their hands as they come in through the letter box. Other humans - he likes however, just as long as they're not coming into his territory. Superb watchdog, he can hear the slightest sound outside and alerts us with barking. Insatiable prey drive - regularly takes down rabbits and ...
