we promised our daughter a puppy for her birthday( like you do) looked on the internet as only wanted a small dog for a already busy home. Found patterdale advertised. when i reseached the breed i was reluctant, but took a chance. so glad i did. They are fantastic. You need to be very dominant,so that they know who is boss. But they cant do enough to please. Lola is very easy to train ( loves and treats). she is only 8 months old and can sit, stay, leave, lie down, fetch, recall, heal and many... (read more)

I have a Patty, he is nearly 8, I got him from rescue and he is just fab! Toby is really smart and loves learning new things. Pattys are full of character and naughtiness. They are not for your average first time dog owner especially if you are getting them from a puppy, they do tend to have growing up phases which result in a lot of them ending up in rescue at approx 1 and 2 years old. I had no intention of getting a Patterdale Terrier, it was fate. I was fostering for a rescue and I... (read more)

We got our patterdale at 9 weeks old and he's awesome. Had a few issues with toilet training but does pee on command word. Brilliant at training. His recall is fantastic. Loves kids but does get very excited. Hates being left alone for any amount of time. Very inquisitive especially about cats. Basically like any other pup which is lots of hard work and consistency but very worth while. Wouldn't be without him (read more)

Have had out patterdale since she was 6 weeks old and she is now 8 years old. Destroyed most things as puppy, very protective of toys. Great with children and adults. Hates other dogs. (we have another 2 so that can be difficult sometimes) Noisy, wilful and thinks shes in charge. No recall skills whatsoever. Went to dog training lessons and loved it, did everything, but was clever enough to know that at classes it was one thing, back home it was another. Shes very very intelligent. Knows... (read more)

If I had read the 'official' breed guides to Patterdales before getting one, I would have stayed well clear! Luckily I fell in love with a handsome little black dog at the rescue kennels and never looked back. My Patt is a gentle, loving dog who would happily sleep next to you, under the covers, on his back, paws in the air if you let him! He has sooo much character and is as intelligent as they come. I have two small children and he is great with them. I would say his only downfall is that... (read more)

My PT is very good with my 16 year old cat, and she is also afraid of water. These dogs were bread to go to ground, and water is a foriegn concept. I dont know if I could be trained out of them. I agree with you 100%, mine is the best and smartest dog I have ever had!
To get her to leave her toys, I had to offer my little girl something she wanted more, usualy a tasty treat. She is very food driven, and I just keep my hand on the toy while I reach for a treat and tell her calmly to let go. It took a while, but she always left the toy in my hand to take the treat out of the other. good luck with your little one!

She also hates being left alone even for a second they are not easy dogs to own! But like you say very loyal to her pack and gaurds all of us with her life even if she is scared!

We rescued our farm bred Patterdale Terrier when she was just a year old. She is a fantastic pet but does not like loud noises so was not suited to farm life. Do you know of any particular reason he started this behavior? a progressive attitude change could be a sign of an injury or cancer in the dog, or it could be as simple as him not getting enough exorcise. Patterdales are meant to be working dogs, and need a job to do to be as happy and healthy as possible. If you cant trust your boy around your children, and he isn't responding to you much anymore, it's time to bring in the pro's. a Professional dog trainer will be able to pinpoint the problem, and show you (and your children) how to keep him under control

I have a patterdale this breed can climb trees should the dog be able to work it out. mine loves climbing up over fences.
Written on: 22/04/2011
They are escape artists for sure - especially the males & are blinking good climbers, especially for their size, they love to be up high. It's combination of willpower, interest in the outside world, prey drive & sheer intelligence I think, that makes them so good at this - they htink it out & try over & over again. I've known of a couple of males killed young this way, finding their way out onto the road. A lot of exercise, good games & a seriously dogproofed garden is the answer. This'll take trial & error!
Good luck, I have 2 Patterdale/Lakeland terriers & thankfully my male dog is not determined to escape. His Uncle however can hop a 4'fence with ease, & much much higher with a bit of thought. He'll try anything, but is an obedient lad & goes to work with his Tree Surgeon Dad.

I found this review not helpful because... The reviewer was clearly not capable or experienced enough to look after a dog of this kind. A working dog of this kind cannot possibly get enough exercise on a lead.

I found this review not helpful because...you cannot get rid of a dog because after one night of wanting nothing to do with you, you think he will bite you!! My Patterdale does this when she is feeling unwell and like a child favours the attention of one owner, but has never growled or bitten anyone.... Maybe it did the toilet on your bed necause it has an upset stomach. ...... How Ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Written on: 22/04/2011
I found this review not helpful because...this dog is displaying classic signs of being 'top dog' or pack leader, due to inexperienced handler. This is not a matter of size or strength, but attitude, & is obviously not poster's fault.. He is treating your wife as his, & marking you out as an intruder/outsider to his territory (literally).
All of the above can be changed & handled by an experienced handler who will not allow a male terrier (or any terrier) to rule the roost.

Is he neutered? Has the Vet checked him for any conditions which may be causing this? A good behaviourist could help with this, & he need not be returned, or become any more agressive.

Hope you find some help! They're great dogs, & I wouldn't be without mine.
