“sic and tired”

Written on: 05/04/2013

I have bought many items from SGW over the years, and have gotten some good items, Although.. it is a gamble! Most things have damage, are not described well, and may be unusable. Now, the shipping is outrageous, too! I sell on ebay, so I know commercial rates. Shoes from one coast to the other are 11 dollars max. Yet on SGW site, you pay $15 and a "handling" fee on top. I received two pair of boots, each just in a large box with no packing at all! What the heck is happening! And, I have had... (read more)

“Will not give refund for broken item!”

Written on: 27/03/2013 by meshoppytoo (1 review written)

I like shopgoodwill.com because everything a got was well packaged so nothing could get broken. My last item came packaged well, almost over doing it a little. One of the Pyrex lids came with part of the lip broken off and missing. The broken off pieces could not be found with the wrapped up lid or in the box. The Appleton, WI Goodwill claimed it was broken in shipping, a claim would be filed and I would get a refund. That was two months and many emails ago and still no refund. I was... (read more)

“Shill Bidding Rampant”

Written on: 26/03/2013

After watching the SAME musical instrument sell THREE TIMES in the Indianapolis Goodwill.com auction site I realized that someone who actually intends to pay for a won item is competing against shill and phantom bidders who have no intention of ever paying for an item with NO POLICING of this by the Goodwill managers. I suspect they even encourage this to inflate prices to a legitimate bidder. I Would avoid this crooked auction like the plague. (read more)

I have to agree. I've won a few auctions, but after the item is sitting for days right up until the last 5 minutes with no bids, all of a sudden the price jumps and you are outbid. They are monitoring your bids and going in and uping the price. Then the item reappears on the site for auction later on with a higher start price. They also don't represent defects, broken, torn, etc. in the art work.

I bought two works of art on ShopGoodwill and am happy with both items. I have some experience in this field and notice a tremendous amount of textured prints being sold as originals and worthless, mass-produced, production line "art" from China, Mexico, etc., put out there as originals. We also noticed the item descriptions were becoming less and less accurate. We were brought back after a regional manager asked us to give it another chance. “Over The Top Shipping Rates”

Lots of treasures to be had - but the shipping costs and handling costs are way out of line. They could also benefit from lessons in good customer service. Descriptions are sometimes very vague and sparse. Items are often staged for pictures - they conceal imperfections and sometimes make lots appear to be more than the lot actually is. Some auctions are to lengthy - they should be a shorter period of time. They are also very slow in shipping the winning items. I have personally waited... (read more)

“Shopgoodwill.com needs an overhaul”

Written on: 19/10/2012 by Consumer1234 (1 review written)

SGW.com is a very sketchy proposition at this point. It's definitely "buyer beware". Yes, first off, shipping prices are very high and they now charge a handling fee on most auctions in addition to shipping (shameful). And yes, this can double the price of an item - esp with auctions that offer items weighing less than 5 pounds - mainly because SGW.com locations will only ship via UPS and apparently USPS is the ONLY way to ship small items (less than 5 lbs) economically. I shop on line alot and I have bought on shopgoodwill alot. By the time you pay the excessive shipping cost, the item isn't worth it. Also by shipping mainly by UPS they take alot of business away from the USPS. Not all the stores are excessive, but there are plenty that are. If they get any tax exemp status, it should be taken away because they are pulling in tons of money. I just saw a lot of tiny toy cars, and they had 14.00 shipping. I would agree with this review - I have visited shopgoodwill.com often and I follow many auctions on the sight (Mostly musical instruments, art, computer gear and cameras). The shipping costs from most locations in the US is excessive - that's because they use UPS for items weighing less than 5 lbs. Which brings up another point. The items offered are located through out the US at individual stores and regional centers - the inconsistencies in service (listing quality, shipping, etc) are dramatic. I think some stores have very little idea of good customer service levels, and some stores have very poor product knowledge. I would strongly suggest that you complain about this to shopgoodwill.com headqtrs in Orange Co, CA USA.

You can calculate the charges before bidding, and I strongly suggest you do because your final cost could more than double. Again - SGW is actually many stores around US listing on a central site (admin is Orange Co CA Goodwill). Many stores have very poor product knowledge and lack even the will/ability to make basic, necessary tests on electronic equipment, for example. They admit it in their listings - if you bid and win on an electronic item with them it's a gamble- they may take a non-functioning item back, they may not. Figure in time and shipping and you've got a real headache. Shame - all they have to do is send their tech items to central stores and give good customer service. How they function with the present system I have no idea.

“Shill Bidding By Employees at Goodwill.com”

Written on: 16/09/2012

I thought this site was pretty cool until I realized that something fishy was going on. I began to notice that the final auction price would end up being "just below" my max bid. Which is fine, I guess, considering that is what I would agree to pay for the item. So for example, I'd see an item listed for $6 at current bid (no other bidders) then during the final hours of the auction, the bid would increase to "just below" my final bid. CAN IT BE PROVEN? NO CHANCE. THERE IS A WAY AROUND IT, BUT THAT IS MY SECRET. ALSO, EMPLOYEES CAN BID ON SOMETHING THEY TRULY WANT...AND KNOW WHEN THEY DO WHAT YOUR HIGHEST BID IS GOING TO BE IN ADVANCE.

You need to do some homework. How does Goodwill get off with listing a Guitar that I can prove to you weighs only seven (7) pounds as weighing forty-nine (49) pounds? that's an outright LIE perpetrated only to make more money off of shipping. It's pretty ridiculous when they charge $48.12 for shipping. They will price themselves out of the market, though in reality. When you can go online and buy a brand new guitar for $119.00 that they are selling for whatever they can get for a bid and then $49.12 shipping with a $4.00 handling fee..I am one of the poor-Disabled/Handicapped and thought that this would be a good way to buy an affordable guitar for my daughter-HA!-what a joke. You must work for Goodwill Industries to even make such a comment-everybody knows what they are doing, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out and just because they are a non-profit charity (right-I watch the employess at our local Goodwill Thrift Store loading up the "good" stuff into their cars on a regular basis) they are not exempt from the law. When they list a seven pound item as weighing forty-nine pounds that is "false advertising" at the least.. Regardless of who they are, they need to be reported to the FTC and the FCC (as internet regulators).

If you email and "complain" to the particular store that has a guitar listed as 40 pounds and what not, some of them will work with you and change shipping methods. A $42 UPS shipping fee turned into $20 USPS Parcel Post just from me inquiring. Also, I do agree that there might be some cases of shill bidding and relisting items. But, there are some deals on there if you can find them. I recently won two 35 pounds vintage speakers that are in pretty good shape, I paid $122 shipped for both. Some in the same condition on Ebay fetch anywhere from $250-375 shipped.

You're not being over-charged for 7 lbs. You are being charged for the over-sized box it needs to be shipped in. This is usually posted somewhere on the page. And that is what the shipping companies are charging them. I know because I went to various courier sites and entered the weight and size of a guitar box.
And if you didn't agree with the shipping charges, then you shouldn't have bid on the guitar.
If your local GW employees are doing what you said, then you should report them to their head office.

I am so frustrated with Goodwill's Shop online website. I often frequent Goodwill to buy clothing and other household items for myself and my children. In addition I donate all of my reusable clothing and household items to Goodwill so I thought, why not shop online? I told my friends about the online Goodwill and we all eagerly placed bid on items, I got it down to a science where I was notified by Goodwills "Personal Shopper" service where I would recieve an email notifying me of when... My sentiments exactly! My son wanted to bid on something and then we discovered the shipping costs.
Wow! How do they justify that??? After reading other complaints on other sites about Goodwill I will not buy anything from them.

You are not paying the postal service, you pay your "shipping and handling" charges to Goodwill Industries and they in turn pay the shipper, so only Goodwill knows what they actually pay the shipper but I'd be willing to bet my last dollar that what they pay the shipper is nowhere near what they charge you. I was bidding on a $20.00 (twenty dollar) item until I found out that the shipping charges were $49.12 (forty-nine dollars and twelve cents) with a mandatory additional $4.00 (four dollar) handling fee. All this combined brought the total,at that point, to more than the item cost new in the store. It's no doubt, a sham in my opinion.

Shipping example for UPS:

2 lb. package from Florida to Washington state: $14.65.

BTW, shipping charges aren't decided by how much you paid for it. They are decided by the weight AND the dimension of the package. Look it up for yourself, folks.

“Outrageous shipping charges”

Written on: 18/01/2012 by allnamesaretaken

I bought a vintage doll dress. Small piece of cotton that could easily fit in a padded envelope and shipped safely with no danger of damage. They charged me 16 dollars to ship that little dress!! I was bid up very fast, and I suspect it was not just another random bidder but I cannot substantiate that. Still it looked bad. The fix for me is easy, never shop there again. But submitting this review to warn others to avoid it. (read more)

“$18 shipping charge for a single barbie???? WTF???”

Written on: 10/01/2012 by Stacey253

Their shipping charges are highway robbery. I am a powerseller on Ebay and have NEVER charged such an atrocious amount for something so small. Corporate greed has moved into the nonprofit sector and Shopgoodwill is a gleaming example of it. I'm honestly surprised anyone donates anymore!!! (read more)

“The bottom line”

Written on: 29/11/2011

I read the other reviews and understand that shill bidding is a serious allegation yet I have witnessed it time and time again on this website. I watched parts laptops prices get driven through the freaking roof. Then mysteriously reappear a week later same freaking serial number etc. Dont believe me watch an item that's priced through the roof and I guarantee within two weeks it's back on the block for bidding. My opinion if your getting stuff donated to you (don't shill bid Goodwill) if... (read more)

I agree. Vintage untested camera prices are illogical. I haven't confrmed the shill bids, but have suspected it....that or seriously rich and stupid bidders.

You are both absolutely right. Any intelligent or semi-intelligent bidder knows that you don't drive up the price by placing bids when there's five days of bidding left. You don't bid in that period and hope that others don't either, but even when they do, you let it ride until the last hours (or minutes) of the last day. So, yes, I wonder who's making those early bids that needlessly drive up the price of an item? I came close to bidding on some items on the recommendation of an acquaintance, until I discovered the ridiculously high shipping charges, the fraudulant weights they placed on items (in some cases more than 40 pounds more than the item actually weighs), the shill bidding and the lackadaisical shipping attitude and time.

“I have been banned from all Goodwill auctions!!!!”

Written on: 15/11/2011

Goodwill would have an item listed that ran on batteries and they would list it as, "untested". Seeing that Goodwill is to help and train people. I would ask them if maybe they could trail an employee to put a fricken battery in it to see if it would work? Then they would block me. I used to bid on clocks. I would pick a clock to bid on and then wait to see how long it was before I was outbid. At a store in Michigan it doesn't take long! This happened over and over. Then the shill bidder... “Goodwill Auction Site a scam”

Written on: 26/09/2011 by luvberryshortcake (1 review written)

First of all Goodwill Auctions talks about how they have tested all their gold and carefully weighed and it before auction. The necklace I bought was suppose to be 2.4 grams of gold. I also was charged about $12.00 for shipping from California and I'm in Oregon which was outrageous. When I received the necklace I noticed right away it wasn't at all as described and was severely damaged and kinked to the point it was not suitable to wear.It also was described in auction as a minimum of 2.4... “Goodwill taking advantage of consumers”

Written on: 26/09/2011 by Dutchspani

very high starting bids. Very very high shipping cost. Handling fee, really? Could buy a lot of the items new at the store after you add all of that together. And being an avid goodwill store shopper I feel I'm getting the leftover junk at the stores now because the better stuff is being listed for auction at much higher prices. Will not shop stores or online ever again. Wake up people do the math! (read more)

“I am sick and tired of seeing overpriced shipping...”

Written on: 15/08/2011 by susieriis (1 review written)

They're charging by the pound and definitely adding extra to make extra money! Isn't fair, isn't right. Example: charging 2 lbs for cloth necklace with a few pins on it. HELLO!?!?!? What???? Plus they tack on a $2 s/h fee. RIP OFF ALERT!!!!!! (read more)
