I called 118 118 for the first time in April, they gave me the number, which I wrote down and called it. Today, I have received a bill for £12.50 . They claim I was on the phone for almost 5 minutes to them after I had listened to a message explaining the charges. i rang 118 service after being burgled and needed local police station number, at no point was a pre recorded messaged played to inform me of the charges and at no point was I told how much by the operator... and I got charged £27 for one phone call.. Yes 55.75 pounds!! I noticed a lady with a 109 pounds rip off in these reviews!!! Icontacted Customer care118,they gave me a whole spiel,offered me 15pounds ,Iexploded then.To add insult to injury they said the real charge should be 70pounds!! The £109 was my mum, and my review. I've since written to the CEO, and received a refund of all their charges. Still chasing sky for their part which was £10. I also wrote to watchdog but no response so far. However I did get a quick response from my mp who then wrote to Ofcom, but their response was a complete fob off.

Not only can you barely understand the operator, They charge you for the call that they connect you to, there fore has something to do with BT for allowing them to do this. I thought they would charge me for connection. At the point I used them because neither my phone or broadband was working and I used it to call BT! After seeing my monthly bill from sky found that it was ninety pounds more than usual.After making enquiries found that £78 had been charged through use of 118 calls one of them costing £48 for a sixteen minute call which my wife stupidly asked them to connect.This is like having a licence to print money,they are taking advantage of people who are not aware of the sky high charges. rang 118118 on the 21st march 2013 to try to locate a relative to inform them of a bereavement. tried the number they gave but it was unavailable. rang back to 118118 to inform them, was given another number but this was wrong. when got my phone bill I had been charged £4.79 for one of the calls and £6.75 for the other which I find totally disgusting for a few seconds work. will never use again. Just got my phone bill and have been charged £4.37 for using this service. Interesting to see that on the two occasions I called them, I don't remember the call lasting more than a few seconds yet it claims I was on the phone for over a minute. I intend to call again later and time the length of the call and then check it against my next bill. Funny how you are charged by the minute and they claim both calls were 1 minute and 5 seconds. What a rip off. Got my bill from Talk Talk and couldn't understand why it was much higher than normal. Then I realised. 118 118. For just one, thats one, enquiry, they say on my statement it took 5 whole minutes but I know it didn't, the total cost, £12.48. Never again. 'I will find any way but the 118 way'. Disgusted.

A customer of mine who owns a hairdresser shop Worcester telephoned 118 118 to get our telephone number. She needed it urgently as her shop front had broken and she needed an urgent response. Rather than getting our telephone number the operative tried to get her to use another 'more economical' glazing company. i will never ever use a directory enquiries again they are trying to charge me £129.00 for a ten minute phone call they offered me a fifty pounds off and i said no as that still makes it £79.00 pounds for a ten minute phone call they are trying to say i was on the phone for one hour and twenty mins but i knew i wasnt as i had to pick my children up from school at 3.15 and i made the call at 3.03 so im very mad do not pay for this service always ensure you use your telephone book or google.... Wife used this number to obtain number for local hospital. Was offered to be put through and accepted ... big mistake ! When I checked our latest bill her 5min call came to £9.92. She says she wasn't advised on the costs, otherwise she would have dialled direct herself. Time Offcom stepped in to ensure customers are fully aware of these costs. (read more)

I think you are wrong to award one star to any firm that deliberately misleads a 'customer' to maximise profit. I had the same getting the KLM desk at Aberdeen Airport. The call cost close on £26.00 and when I complained to BT was told they could do nothing. Shame on both companies.

I am a pensioner on very limited income. My phone bill is usually about £16 but this month it is over £40 ! A friend dropped in last Friday and asked if he could use my phone to get a number. He said it would not cost much and he would cover it. He wanted the number for Butlins in Skegness but it took him 4 calls and a total of 13 minutes to get it ! I was charged £21.80 to obtain one number and they said i had spent 14 minutes using their service, which was a load of rubbish, why would i do that when i was in a hurry at the time other wise i could have got the number free on the internet.
Anyway i phoned them on this number 0800 389 1118 which my phone provider gave me to speak to 118, and to cut a long story short asked for my money back, they said they will send me a cheque for £15, lets see...but that call still cost me nearly £7...
Im still going to contact trading standards, these people must be stoped.
Make sure if you do phone this number that you ask them first if this number is free to you cause i wouldnt trust them as far as i could throw them...regards

I am retired and on very limited income. My monthly phone bill is about £16. This month it shot up to 40+. on checking I see why.....a friend dropped in last Friday and asked if he could use the phone to get a number, he rang 118118 thinking it was a free service !!!!

I have no major complaint with the service itself. 9 times out of 10 they would get the right number, and be very prompt with it as well. But I would never recommend you use this number unless it's absolutely vital. I had to call this number a few times this month because I was away from other methods of finding telephone numbers, and my bill cost me £76! I rang 118118 to get a number and when asked if i wanted to be transferred I said yes. I have now recieved a bill via bt for £24.13p. I run a small business and was miss sold a advertising pacege with 118118. I was expecting one month a £24 bill but instead I got a £98 bill. I tried talking to them to explain that this product had been miss sold to me and the amount is incorrect but they rudely said it was my word against theirs. I was shocked to recieve my latest mobile phone bill. I was in an emergency situation and had called 118 118 to get the requuired number. I was astonished to see I had been charged £12.00 for a less then 5 min call. Please take my advise and whatever you do - don't use their number. I recenty purchased a HTC Mobile with the usual £10 top - up, Getting used to the mobile by calling my home-line a couple of times in just 3-4 days my credit was 0.I again topped up with £20 but the next day I was 0 credit again..On inquiring with orange they stated I had called 118500 for a duration of 15 mins. charging £19.50.
Firstly I never called 118500,if I needed a line number I would have used my land line but 15 minutes ?? Who in tarnation would want to speak with the operator for all that time, is this another scam???. O.A.P.

Just received my phone bill, which had shot up, on reviewing it I had been charged £32.364 for 25 minutes on the phone, even though I only spoke to them for about 3 minutes they texted me the number I required and I asked them not to put me through from their directory. What idiots work there payments out need to be fully investigated, and I will be taking the matter further. I will never use this service again, and I will never recommend it either. I don't know if anyone has realised yet - but for almost the past 2 years 118 118 has been based in the Philapines, Manilla to be exact. 118 118's last UK based call centre closed in 2010.

I urgently needed to get hold of my husband as was locked out with 2 young kids without phone, tried 118 118 to get hold of the company telephone number where he was working and despite having full name and address of the company they provided me with the number of a competitor. minimum charge for this misinformation via public telephone was £2!
