Good Points: Some excellent wit.
Modern
Bad Points: Story rambled and lacked interest and appeal.
General comments: I had read some reviews of this book and looked forward to the 'laugh a page' one reviewer had mentioned. It was a 50-50 split between laughs and yawns for me.
The writing is candid, punctuated with swear words and gritty insights that help to acclimatise you with his perspective. Vernon God Little tugs you into his rotting chaos, creating apprehension in the reader rather than empathy, as the mystery plot leaves you tracing every detail of sentence for a piece of insight. When you realise that all you're getting is location and witty remarks, the book starts to lose it's appeal. With a vague storyline and some hefty lumps of main character struggle, which is basically what the story is about, I got a bit fed up with it and wanted something more interesting to do. I did finally finish the book, but it was hugely disappointing. Instantly forgettable.

The characters are as fascinating as they are infuriating. The plot borders on the predictable and at times ...- Read MarkEdin76's review (142 words)

'Vernon Little God' the title is the most interesting thing about the book. With the Colombine tragedy still fresh in mind I thought it would be a fictional account into the minds of those who could do such a thing and why. The story starts of well enough by setting the scene of a high school shooting, one dead suspect and one suspect who denies involvement, but then goes off into a boring thread about his uninteresting and seemingly uncaring family life. The media involvement has potential bu ...- Read fayula's review (153 words and 5 comments)
