We have had a Waterside MC250 water softener for about 11 years. Because of its restricted location it is difficult to access, load and service. Notwithstanding, it has proved to be an effective, reliable and durable unit, adquately serving the needs of a large and busy household, but when I replace it (with the next Waterside model), the new unit will be installed outside (in its own bunker), to avoid any potential flooding events, as described in other reviews.

All the negative comments in this section are entirely in keeping with my own experiences of this product. Just in case anyone has missed the point, it is RUBBISH! I personally would never buy another Culligan product. I have recently bought a new Harvey Block Salt softener which, although it is a bit pricey, seems to work like a dream without any of the apparently fragile electronics and shoddy construction of the Culligan.- Read Guest's review (73 words)

Having had MC250 for about6 years it's been a waste of money and nothing but trouble. Had it not been for the guy who lives opposite me having brought a new discounted head mine would have been kicked out a long time ago as he gave me spare parts. I think I've had all the problems listed leaking filling point and broken collar and now regeneration every night meaning the electrics have failed. Have discussed the options with service centre that seem to think spending £800 plus is acceptabl ...- Read Guest's review (101 words)

I would not touch any of the culligan Water softners even if they were the last softners on this planet.
I have had nothing but grief since being associated with the brand and have now moved on to companies like Harveys and Monarch who have customer services skills and want to assist.
Have now sold over 60 softners between Harveys and Monarch and not one complaint or negative feedback or any bits missing and as far as salt efficiency goes they are just as good as culligan Claim to be when thei ...- Read Guest's review (113 words)

I have had my MC250 for quite a number of years..poss. 8. had a couple of issues, leaking valve at the top (twice) but was fixed by very competent and polite engineer from Culligan.
That was 5 years ago and had no problems since- Read Guest's review (56 words)

I keep seeing poor comments about this Waterside MC250 unit, but mine has worked fine for the last 8 years.
Early leak issue (only minor from valve top) was quickly sorted out by a very competent and polite Culligan engineer and had no problems since.
Problem apears to be that non-Ciulligan dealers and engineers do not understand how it works.
ps. It has been supercedede by the MC450 which is even more economical on salt.- Read Peterholland's review (89 words)

have been using Waterside MC250 for 10 years with Magaflow. Culligan took over Waterside and now seem to have a monopoly on parts and service. It has failed 3 times, most recently with continuous overflow. 2 years ago had dispute with Culligan as service technician tried to phone to bring appointment time forward. There was no one in to answer phone, so he called in anyway, but there was still no-one in. Culligan then tried to charge a callout fee, and the service manager at Culligan suppo ...- Read RobbietheSpark's review (116 words)

Our Waterside MC250 failed last November (leak around inlet fixed by local plumber replacing tiny o-ring), then again big time about four weeks ago (appears to be failed water outlet), resulting in a flooded kitchen and cellar. Nightmare! Hence, seeking a different model to sit outside the kitchen window.- Read lambdonlarge's review (66 words)

I have a waterside MC250 and once again it has flooded part of my garage, fortunately it was not installed under the sink !
This is the third time in 4 years it has stopped working and it's going in the skip. I am looking at these reviews for some guidance becasue i live in a very hard water area . This one seems to have some sort of built in obsolescence, maybe this particular point could be investigated !- Read Baffledagain 's review (104 words)

I have had a waterside MC 350 for 3 years its has given me nothing but greif the service engineer had not turned up on 1 occasion so i lost out a days leave and when he did come out the repair only lasted 3 months since then my water softer has been left on bypass as it keeps on Flooding. How this company is still trading I dont know. I thought a big name in water treatment like Culligan would have a good service ...does it? Hell NO!...
Now my softner is sitting in my utility room doing nothing ...- Read TriedAndTested's review (139 words)

I have had a Waterside mc250 and it seems to have some sort of built in obsolescence, this is the second time in 4 years it has broken down and flooded. No warning. I would not buy another of their products. The service charge is outrageously expensive and the same part, the head, is to blame again this time. You would have thought they could make them to last longer than about two years.
If i call out Waterside again i will have paid more for the two services plus parts than i did for the new ...- Read Guest's review (117 words and 1 comment)

Bought this Waterside MC250 machine 3 years ago and from day one it beeped 'error 1'. we followed the manual and a few weeks later it did it again. We have lived with this; but now it just doesnt shut up and floods the kitchen; moving onto another product; would never buy another one of these. Never.- Read Guest's review (56 words)

The Waterside MC250 is small and compact. Easily loaded. Leaked from day one. Called out service engineer on warranty. Leak free for 6 months then started leaking again. I knew what the problem was an O ring seal on the blend valve. Cullingham would not supply on its own so had to purchase whole unit at £25. Worked leak free for 2 months then total carnage, flooded utility and was on the way to flood ground floor when it was discovered. The new blend assembly nut had sheared completly al ...- Read mallyj2000's review (127 words)

Softens the water but leaks like mad and the supplier wants 50 quid for 6 rubber O rings !
This Waterside MC250 machine is awful. Mine started having problems after about 18 months, the circuit board was the 1st thing to go, I think that it's a terrible product.- Read ritchieme's review (45 words)

Bought the MC250 about 4 years ago. After a year of installation started having minor leaks. Lately suddenly started flooding the floor on several occasions mainly overnight for some reason. Estimated repair cost was more expensive then the cost of the product!! I was shocked!! Will not have it repaired. Currently looking for an alternative product.
There is no way I'll have another Culligan/Waterside product ever again.- Read waterside's review (67 words)

The MC250 is easily servicable but the best way is buy a new head from Wrekin Water Softeners. I did this with their technical advise and it was suprisingly easy, and now I have a modern head and a new lease of life.
A new head cost me £124.99 including vat and delivery. They also service Culligan machines in their local area so they knew what they were talking about.- Read paulddiy's review (70 words)

We have had many problems with the Waterside MC250(19) unit. A major leak when the head collar failed flooded the kitchen, could have been an expensive insurance claimThe service is slow and very expensive, £92 call out!! Spares are not generally available so it cannot be serviced by an independent engineerI would not recommend.- Read roger7webster's review (66 words)

I bough one of these Waterside MC250 softeners and a local plumber fitted it checking that the water pressure was ok. Leaked flooding the kitchen after about six months and I was told to fit a presssure valve as my water pressure could be fluctuating !. Fitted a pressure valve and a new seal kit, all was ok for six months then another leak appeared causing damage to the magnetic pick up sensor. If you by one of these a bypass valve is "essential", mine has now been out of use for two years as ...- Read gskm10's review (176 words and 2 comments)
