“Why did Hotpoint concieve the twin drum and not patent it?”

★☆☆☆☆

written by MasterOfNothing on 10/06/2013

The Dyson Washing machine in theory, with it's twin drum that can counter-rotate, is teh best wash that you can get. The problem is that in order to achieve this in a (nearly) standard sized washing machine bow, the complexity inside is awesome.... and unreliable... James Dyson actually took on 1 or 2 ex-Hotpoint development engineers who has been working on Hotpoints 'Vougue2' platform. As part of that programme, the split double drum design was concieved and tested, but it was clear that the mid-range market that Hotpoint used to dominate could neither afford such a machine (i.e. in the £200 to £450 range) and it had one problem.... If the Drums were not perfectly manufactured and assembled - IT TORE UP CLOTHES. Warranty costs would have been astronomical. So Hotpoint purposely DID NOT PATENT the design and continued to develop a very good product that was made in North Wales up until 2 years ago. Sadly the factory was closed by the new owner (Merloni/Ariston-Indesit), but not because the product was bad, just because foreign owners just see the UK as a market for products, not a manufacturing base. I feel sorry for James, up to a point. The 'factory' just outside of Tetbury in the Cotswolds is no longer a production facility - it is now purely a nice building with a carpark in fornt of the offices.... and a special place for James' car with JD written in it. Anyway, now he is into cooling air and drying hands........

I too bought a dyson cro1 and knowing I was due to retire, I believed the salesman who told me that the machine parts and repairs would always be available and would be charged as a set call out fee. having paid for the extra warranty plus one after warranty call out and the initial £800 cost It now turns out that my washing has cost me almost as much as sending it to the laundry Dyson should be ashamed. I loved the fact that I could wash my double duvet every year and have only good things to say about the quality of the wash as I do about my dc04 vacumn....

I too paid £100 in November to have my dyson machine repaired and covered for 12months and then sent a letter saying they will not be making parts and was sent £60. My machine broke again in January I'm a single mam with 3 kids and can't afford another machine after I invested in a good one to last, Dyson have no customer service and should be ashamed of themselves

“When I bought my £1200 Dyson Washing machine 8 years...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 30/07/2009

When I bought my £1200 Dyson Washing machine 8 years ago the company was shouting from the rooftops that it would LAST FOR 20 YEARS. The faults started almost strait away and it was twice exchanged for drum bearing faults.
Since then it has had a further 3 drums and various other parts costing me nearly £300 in repairs from Dyson.
It is once again broken and since I am just outside the 12 month repair warranty Dyson do not want to know. I am told that they no longer have any new parts for this machine and that they cannot repair the bearings any longer.
I could have bought a brand new mid range washing machine EVERY YEAR for the amount that I have spent at Dyson. This company has GONE TO THE DOGS, they have sacked all of their best engineers and do not care about their customers which in reality was their only strong point. Even the vacuum cleaners are now OLD HAT and you can buy better vacs for a fraction of the price. Shame on you DYSON.

I found this review very helpful because... I have just had the same experience, bought new dyson washing machine in 2002. It broke down in 2006 they could not mend it so gave me a replacement. now in 2010 it has broken again and they cannot mend it at all, no spare parts so I am left having to buy another washing machine. The original dyson cost me £900 in 2002!!!!

“I bougt my Dyson CRO1 in 2002, which cost me over ...”

written by Kayla67 on 07/07/2009

I bougt my Dyson CRO1 in 2002, which cost me over £1000, i have had nothing but problems with it, the problems started 2 weeks after the 2 years guarantee had run out. The engineer has been out on countless occasions. In October i paid £95 for a service, all was ok until April when the problems started. The lastest was yesterday, when i was told the bearings have gone and they no longer repair it as they are unable to get parts because they are no longer making them. I was offered a vacuum cleaner as compensation and my £95 back or £160 with no reimbursement of the £95 but that still leaves me without a washing machine

“What a waste of money this machine has been. Within 12...”

★★☆☆☆

written by booster on 18/04/2007

What a waste of money this machine has been. Within 12 months of purchasing it I noticed small holes in lots of our clothes, I realised it was the machine causing the damage when I put a brand new top in to wash and it came out with 3 holes. Dyson tried to say it was bra wires causing the damage, until I pointed out I handwash my bras. They then suggested it was moths, until I pointed out moths don't eat synthetic fibres! They eventually changed the drum - guess what! 12months on and the holes are back! I also now have the added problem that 3 of the programmes start the cycle but never get past the wash cycle - it just washes and washes and washes .......... I have to cancel the programme and then put it onto rinse and spin cycle to finish it off. I know someone else who also has one of these machines and she has had the same problems. There are so many other large capacity machines on the market that are much cheaper and undoubtedly more reliable, I would NEVER recommend a DYSON

I guess dyson should have kept on their path of amazing vacuum cleaners rather than delving into areas of household chores that are already dealt with well by other companies. We needed new vacuum cleaner technology, but likely not washing machine technology.

I purchased my Dyson 7 years ago. After complaining about small holes in my clothes I too was told it was bra wire or moths. I would not take this answer as I have not lost a bra wire nor do I have moths so they changed the drum... still small holes appeared in everything from socks to coats. Eventually Dyson replaced my machine after 3 years with a brand new one, and guess what? Its a hole maker too! I will never recommend a Dyson washing machine to anyone as there is so many other manufacturers that now offer that large appealing drum. I think the problem lies with the two drums going in different directions, zips, buttons, etc get snagged on material and puncture the fibre.

“My Dyson CRO1 washing machine was bought in preference...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by paulowen on 19/07/2006

My Dyson CRO1 washing machine was bought in preference to a Miele with a 10 year guarantee. Obviously given with some confidence. The Dyson serviceability has been dreadful. 3 inner door handles, one new outer door, several leaks, one complete new drum assembly and another awaited. My last washing machine lasted 18 years, with 13 house moves, and it only needed a new set of motor brushes.

The Dyson is a triumph of style over substance. Well, reliability at least. When working it's brilliant, but for a £1000 I would have expected not to be on Christmas Card terms with the repairman.

“When i first purchased my Dyson CR01 washing machine...”

written by debbiecoyle on 24/02/2006

When i first purchased my Dyson CR01 washing machine it was on the basis that Dyson aimed to send out engineers promptly to fix faults.

I have today (Friday 24/02/06) tried to book an appointment to fix my machine, and I have to wait until next Wednesday. Not only am I disappointed with the delay, but customer services cannot give an a.m. or p.m. indication.

Apparently the engineer only gets given the job the evening before.

“Dyson CRO1 - I bought the Dyson washer expecting many...”

written by blue587 on 13/10/2004

Dyson CRO1 - I bought the Dyson washer expecting many years of trouble-free use -- not so. I am awaiting delivery of my fourth Dyson washer due to total breakdown. The drum seized up, the bearings have gone twice. I have also experienced ripping of clothes and doors breaking. The engineers are good though.

“At first I was very impressed with this Dyson CRO1...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by xSuex on 22/04/2004

At first I was very impressed with this Dyson CRO1 washer.
The size of the drum and access to it were excellent. The programme times seemed shorter than previous machines I had owned, and wash results were good.
Unfortunately after having the machine for one week, it started to fill with water when it wasn't in use.
Dyson's customer services told me I had installed the machine incorrectly and only on the second call did they agree to send out an engineer. The engineer found the inlet valves were faulty, and while he was there the circut board for the door lock blew.
With the machine being new I asked for a replacement instead of a repair but Dyson refused.
The retailer however refunded me and from now on I will stick to Bosch.
