“Never buy one !!!”

The only good point is that this freezer is pleasing to the eye and will probably be the most expensive ornament in your kitchen as it isn't fit for purpose as it is continually breaking, we have nursed ours for a number of years and it now on its way to the skip. We will choose a cheaper option for its replacement.

Danger do not buy or take if someone gives one away what a load of rubbish would'nt even use as a skip nothing but trouble with mine had to put my foot down before whirlpool finally caved in and gave us a some money towards a new machine they wanted to give a replacement however i put my foot down and refused the contractor agsrefrigeration put in a report there was some sort of crack in the insulation in the freezer compartment this was the reason why ours kept on icing up every couple of weeks.

“S20B RSB21-A/G Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer”

★★★★☆

written by Buck77 on 30/08/2013

Ok, had this freezer about 10 years. The unit packed up about 2 years ago and I've kept it in storage. The original fault was the usual flashing led's on the front and the clicking noise to the rear ( rear circuit board relay fault). All you need is a little patience..... I made a list of the capacitors (they dry out over time and their value changes, which is what causes most of the problems) and the relays on both the front and rear electronic circuit boards just in case they were faulty too. I then procured these from a local store called Rapid. You should be able to buy these online very easily. Once purchased, I carefully removed all the said components from each board and replaced them with the new ones. (Look up soldering techniques PDF in google for a guide of how to solder / de-solder and TAKE YOUR TIME!!) if you are not good at soldering get someone who is to do this, as you do not want to damage the soldered tracks / other components....this is not a hard job it just needs patience! Anyhow, I plugged in the referbished boards and voila all works fine. After 10 mins, Check the compressor at the lower rear portion of the unit for heat ( carefully touch) and check the adjacent fan is running. After about an hour the red light on the front console should extinguish and the default temperatures should illuminate in green for both the fridge and freezer sections - freezer -22 Deg, fridge 6 Deg. Personally I think this is a fairly robust unit especially as most white goods are made very cheaply these days! Mark from Essex

I have one of these that has done the very same thing and I've kept mine with a view to fixing it. I'd love some help, how do you get the front panel out and how do you know what the type and rating of the capacitors? I was able to buy a capacitor repair kit for a TV for about £10 and I was able to replace the damaged capacitors (bowed tops). Would really appreciate some help. Martin

“Don't buy this!”

written by Ts676328 on 05/08/2013

Just a terrible design and breaks down continuously. The only positive is it looks good. The drawers are stiff and difficult to open close The drawers are nearly impossible to remove/replace so nightmare to clean Smaller inside than you think Trays drawers easily crack Interior design very basic Over priced I've had cheap makes and models that have lasted years without a fault!

ice maker went faulty and nts service engineer diagnosed problem and work is scheduled for repair 29/4/2013 10 MONTHS! whirlpool customer care namely MRS. godden has been no help whatsoever and E'MAIL documents support my facts and show them to have failed in their duty to the customer to resolve the matter EARLIER.(1O month delay is totally due to their inability to supply the spare part and apologies are UNWELCOME. it is obvious they are not a big player in the MANUFACTURER/SPARES/REPAIR business and i would advise customers to buy other manufacturer products as -ONE could be as bad as WHIRLPOOL.

“I am writing this just to help anyone who is having...”

I am writing this just to help anyone who is having problems with their Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer. I have had mine for 5 years trouble free however last month the freezer alarm started sounding, showing -- on the temperature display. I could reset it by switching it off and on at the front panel, it would clear for a while then do the same thing again but the freezer temperature was low and slightly defrosting. Mine has the ice and water dispenser but no water filter at the lower front unlike many.
Most faults are actually caused by the capacitors on the rear PCB, the board costs £200 but you can buy the capacitor kit for £10, its an easy repair, you can get the kit at http://shop.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/Refrigeration+Parts/Whirlpool/Whirlpool+Control+Modules/Whirlpool+American+Fridge+Electronic+Control+PCB+Repair+Kit.html

good instructions at;
www.brysat.eu/whirlpool.aspx

The kit comes with instructions and has fixed mine. Good luck, hope this helps

Folowing on from my last comment, I had a pair of Whirlpool engineers together trying to fix the problem. In the end they had replaced everything and the only thing outstanding could be a re-gassing. They left with it working OK as usual and for their follow up call two days later I confirmed that everything seems fine. Hurray! A day later back to the same problem. Went out and bought a cheap Beko American Fridge - Marvelous. Garage has a 5yr Whirlpool waiting to be dumped.

Hope this is helpful to some others: Always try defrosting fully for 24 hours with doors open, and hoovering all vents front and back. Whirlpool engineer told us that the dust build up in the vents can cause the air flow to slow, causing the coils to freeze. Although frost free the lack of air flow restricts the freezers ability to defrost itself. Ours showed the same fault as yours. Luckily the defrost thing has cured it, its been over 8 weeks now and its working fine, took it apart other day and no ice has built up so assume its fixed. Dont rush into buying new PCBs, its worth a full defrost and dust before spending.

do NOT under any circumstances buy one, NEVER. i've had mine for 7 years now, and have had continuous never ending problems right from the start, at first starting with simple stuff like door hinges, then ice in fridge causing drawers to jam and break, then water dispencer, then ice maker leaking, then water dispencer working of its own accord, etcl etc. all of the above needed changing. luckily i had parts warranty but still disruption and labour needs a mortgage to keep up. never again, tell all you know, do not buy

“Bought one of these about 5 years ago, and £1500....”

written by on 28/08/2009

Bought one of these about 5 years ago, and £1500. Huge on the outside, not so big on the inside. Ist year it was fine, then the icemaker broke, took Whirlpool several visits to fix it, about 3 months in total. Then boards, then the diffuser (fridge section either freezes or get too hot) twice, same poor service from whirlpool.

Now the diffuser has failed again, and I'll try fixing myself (a new one is £95) or kill it in the attempt.

Its great when it works, icemaker is excellent.

Trouble is it breaks down far, far too often, and spares are expensive.

“Bought the Whirpool American fridege freezer back in...”

written by on 15/07/2009

Bought the Whirpool American fridege freezer back in 2003 from Alders (approx £1500) with a free 5 year guarentee. After 3 years it conked out (alarm going off, control panel flashing etc). Fortunately PCB and control panel replaced (eventuially) for free but would have cost around £300-£400 !!!!
In 2009 experiencing different problems (freezer and fridge not holding their temperature). Took bottom front grill off to remove accumalated dust and fluff which I thought would sort it out but it seems the condensor and/or capacitors have had it. Going to cut my loses as trying to get any service from Whirlpool is a waste of time! On the look out for a cheaper more reliable replacement.

“I purchased a whirlpool S25BRSS31 american side by...”

☆☆☆☆☆

written by on 01/07/2008

I purchased a whirlpool S25BRSS31 american side by side in October 2006.
I had it 6 weeks when it started to leak water from the ice dispenser. After waiting for 35 mins on the phone to book in repair, i had to wait 3 weeks for an engineer to repair it. It had a new ice dispenser put in, 7 days later it leaked again.
This continued and after 5 repairs for the same complaint, I demanded a new appliance, which whirlpool agreed to as they failed to fix the problem.
Within 4 months of receiving the replacement appliance, the same fault occurred, ice dispenser leaked again.
I have had 4 repairs all with the same fault as the first time.
Now whirlpool are saying this is an uncommon fault.
I am in the process of taking legal action,as i have had to replace my kitchen floor twice in two years because of the amount of leaks i have had over the past two years.
I would not buy a box of tissues if whirlpool made them, nevermind a fridge freezer.

“I bought the Whirlpool S25BRSS31 in February for...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by michaelx8 on 13/12/2004

I bought the Whirlpool S25BRSS31 in February for £1690, then waited 8 weeks for it to arrive. It came and conquered - we have 3 children and it was amazing to have space left in the fridge even after stuffing it with a weeks shopping and enough beer and wine to dissolve a liver.

Then it stared to go wrong, the alarm would sound a lot, then the ice maker packed up, then the whole fridge became a warm-ish cupboard with nice lights in side.

Machines fail, so I was not unduly upset; yet. I never realised how long it would be out of service you see, always thinking this was the last week of warm butter rancid bacon and lumpy milk.

The engineer could not fix it, new circuit board, he said. 4 or 6 weeks later he came to fit the board, we had to wait 24 hours for it to settle down - and it turned out that that was not the problem, as it didn't settle down. The fault was being identified by a process of elimination rather than diagnosis. We ran out of things to eliminate long before Whirlpool's fisers ran out of reasons why they should take another look....we had 4 repairs visits I think.

To cut a very long story short, I ended up getting my money back from Alders, the junior staff were awful ("you can have a refund but only after we have collected the machine, no we cannot confirm when we will be able to collect the machine") but the senior guy was great ("I understand, you've completely lost faith in the whoile things, I'll get your money refunded this afternoon"). Hosting a combination summer party without ANY refrigeration, we had 4 attempts at fixing the thing, Whirlpool were totally uninterested in our problems - totally, it was quite breathtaking really.

When the guys came to remove it, they couldn't, there were only 2 of them. When the So Solid crew came to remove it, they ended up busting it virtually to bits getting it out of here - it's BIG, and was partially unassembled when delivered. There was something really tragic about watching it beign taken off for scrap, it's door bashing against the path as it was taken up the front garden.

Whirlpool now offer a new model. I like whirlpool fridges, hate their attitude, I would rather find something else to buy but can't see anything I prefer so at the moment we have a £50 second hand fridge from the charity shop and a similar freezer. I have not asked whirlpool for any compensation, their attitude was so awful that I don't really relish dealing with them.

i was looking for reviews here, as due to a change of kitchen the large whirlpool fridge/freezer has to go in favour of two side by side with a worktop on top. just wanted to say that my whirlpool was excellent for many years, only prob was it was too cold even on minimum setting!. when i needed new seals a very pleasant nicky clarke lookalike arrived, I hope for a free cut and style, to be thrown in, but i must say he fitted new seals promptly and efficiently.

Hi, we've had this fridge freezer for 2 years and no problems until now. The displays show two dashes where the freezer temp should be and keeps defrosting every few hours, then re-freezes! This has been happening for 2 weeks now. Can anyone help me work out what the problem might be please? When it comes back on it works fine! No problem with the fridge side at all! Thanks.
