Yes; the drier does tend to rattle a little; and yes, it does require maintenance, but the spare parts are cheap and readily available. so our machine is over 10 years old and still going. Off to fit a new heater and thermostat unit later today. One thing it does not like at all is if you leave wet clothes sitting in the drum for hours. It will refuse to start, or trip the fuse. Empty it and let it dry for some hours, then run it empty for a short period. There is a plastic section at the... (read more)

Never am I buying Hotpoint again. Back in the 80's and 90's they were a brand you could buy and be certain you were getting a quality product. Not any more I'm afraid. My drier has started to show the common fault whereby any attempt to use it results in the circuit breaker for my sockets tripping (look on Google, there are loads of reports of this for the CTD00). The circuit breaker will not reset until I have unplugged the appliance from the wall, leading me to the conclusion it is... (read more)

I just loved how the dryer worked. Never failed, until about a year ago. I had it for about 5 years(i think that's enough), then it broke and i bot one of the new hotpoints. Was quite noisy, but cheap and very effective. I would always recommend it to friends or family, due to its low price. (read more)

SO NOISY!!! I was convinced the bearings had gone (they hadnt) but after a few months I got used to the noise. It was only when I went to a friends house and she had her dryer on that I realised that dryers can be SILENT!!! One good thing is that the water is very easy to empty being at the top. I have seen some machines where the water is at the bottom and its very difficult to empty them because of the weight. When ours eventually became too noisy to bear any longer we actually bought a... This machine does what it says it will do on the can but my, doesn't just want to tell you that it's doing it? This is one noisy mother of a machine. Bang, crash whollop and grind. Had the back off to see if I could spot the obvious. All seems fine to me. If anyone knows a way to turn off the noise, I'd be grateful. N. (read more)

Well, we bought this machine in 2004 and aI must confess that after 2 years, we had noticed that it was starting to take a long time to dry the clothes. Well... after re-reading the instructions, we dicovered that there was a filter at the bottom under a panel... Ooops... I took it into the garden and giove it a full on hose down and got out enough fluff to make a wooly jumper and hey presto it was fab again..

ONLY GAVE IT ONE STAR BECAUSE I COULDN'T GIVE IT ZERO! It stopped heating up just out of warranty, seemed to work fine but only blew out cold air. Hotpoint wanted a £90 call out charge plus parts, plus VAT - they estimated £150 plus vat to fit new thermostats and even more if it was the heating element - only paid £250 for the machine! And after googling the problem it seemed to be a very common issue, so I don't understand why Hotpoint never recalled it. We decided not to get it fixed... (read more)

I have a 4 year old CTD40 which has only JUST recently been giving trouble. Its actually NOT a particularly bad machine if looked after, however if abused it will give trouble like anything else. If airflow is restricted by fluff or overloading, this will cause the thermistors to fail and plastic fan to melt, go out of shape and... (read more)

A Hotpoint Engineer is due to visit this afternoon to look at my dryer, so will let you know what happens!
Written on: 12/01/2009
Ok Folks - Engineer came and quickly diagnosed and fixed the problem! Nice huh.Fault relates to the back panel (not user serviceable) in which water can collect, along with some fluff which soaks it up nicely until it becomes sodden and starts splashing onto the heater which is right next to it, causing the dryer to short out.

So what they have done is designed a new back panel which contains a little "nappy" or "daiper" for our american friends and also a little hole so that it can drain if necessary. He fitted this part to my machine and it's been working fine ever since.

He did also say that we need to REGULARLY clean out the main condenser unit and once removed, reach right into the back (where this panel is) and use some kitchen towel to clean out thoroughly to prevent further problems.

so far so good anyway, so if you are still in warranty and it's playing up, call out the engineer and show him this comment maybe?!

Good luck!

Got my tumble dryer insured through the after market stuff that was sent to me. The engineer came out and fixed it - replaced the heating element, the cooling fan and something else - it worked brilliantly but still took longer than a standard tumble dryer to dry the clothes. It's now been a month since it was fixed, I think it's getting louder again and it's slowly taking longer at drying AGAIN. The engineer said I burnt out the element because I was using it too much........... Erm, how often are you ALLOWED to use it exactly? I'm keeping it insured because I expect I'll be calling the engineer out again and I'm not forking out costly repair bills!!!!
