Good Points: Mutual - no shareholders to pay Very low overheads Low risk investment Good bonuses
Bad Points: Small society Bonuses are not compounded Maximum investment £270 p.a.
General comments: The Royal Standard Friendly Society demonstrates that there is still merit in being a mutual, with no greedy shareholders to pay. As a small society the Royal Standard has very low overheads and can give all its surplus to its policy holders, keeping bonus levels much higher than those on insurance company endowments.
Investors are limited by law to a maximum investment of £270 p.a. in the tax free fund, but over ten years that can easily build up into enough to pay the university top up fee.
