Dependable, inexpensive to operate. I am 5'4" and find this a very comfortable scooter to ride. Handles hills very well. Looks very nice, too.

I have owned a Vespa LX150 for 6 months now, and I love it! I was worried about the price at first, but like the other reviewers said, it's well worth the money.

Don't be deceived and buy a "throw away" scooter like a GC scooter or similar brand. It's worth spending the extra money up front so you won't be sorry a year from now wishing you had done the right thing from the start.

I've had honda metro which I felt like a fat man in a little suit. Also I just got rid of a Silverwing which is heavy and has more power than a corvette. I've had my vespa 150 for 1 week and love it. I've gone from using $10 a day in gas to about .80 cents per day. I drive it everywhere. i highly recommend it. It pays for itself.

“First things first, why Vespa, and why the LX 150?...”

★★★★★

written by Spungle on 06/02/2007

First things first, why Vespa, and why the LX 150? Back in October when we first thought about doing a scooter review, we walked around asking average people what kind of scooter they'd like to see. We interrogated Manhattan yuppies, Brooklyn "hipsters", LA "fashionistas", and even Miami "divas". Regardless of whom we asked, the response was almost always the same. We learned that consumers wanted a bike that is stylish and functional. Consumers wanted a scooter that is both beautiful and masculine. Consumers wanted a bike that turns heads and turns on a dime. Consumers wanted Vespas and so we felt that there truly was no other brand to review.

And, with six models to choose from, why the LX 150? Well, we wanted to review a bike that was powerful enough for the city and powerful enough for the bridges and tunnels that you take to and from the city. We wanted to review a bike that was affordable and a bike that would keep your heart beating every time you hit the accelerator. We wanted to review a bike that can be customized to suit your fancy and a bike that looks great stock right out of the factory. Finding a bike that met all of those requirements was truly a breeze once we were introduced to the marvelous LX 150.

When you look at an LX 150, it's almost impossible not to get a quiver of excitement. The bike is not only aesthetically beautiful, it is a mechanical wonder- a manifestation of 60 years of Italian heritage melded with the most advanced technology possible on a two-wheeled vehicle. (btw- in case you're a trivia buff, it's no coincidence that the model is called the LX and that the Roman numerals for 60 are LX)

The look of the bike is classic and distinctly Vespa. Either you love it or you hate it-- and it surely stands out. When it's parked on a busy street corner, everybody notices. When you're stopped at a red light, everyone stares. So, if you're trying to blend in, this is definitely not the bike for you, because the LX 150 is one heck of an awe-inspiring machine.

While mentioning aesthetics, it's important to note that the bike not only comes in an array of colors, but that it can be customized with a variety of accessories from windshields, to top-cases, chrome kits, custom seats, floor mats, and a number of other accouterments.

So, you're probably saying to yourself, you can look at the photos and get the gist about how beautiful these bikes truly are, but, what about the ride? What's it like? How does it perform?

For starters, the ride is simply amazing. As someone who has had very little motorcycle/scooter riding experience, there was definitely a sense of anxiety and anticipation as the engine started. Knowing that an LX 150 can get up to 60+ MPH in no-time, it was a little nerve-wracking as I glided away on my first ride. To my amazement, after just a few minutes of getting my bearings and gaining a feel for the machine, I was quickly accelerating through the gears in what seemed like a dream come true. As opposed to the horror stories that we've all heard about people's first motorcycle rides, the Vespa LX 150 truly was a gem from the first moment. It was comforting to have both breaks accessible by hand-grip levers, to not have to worry about shifting gears, and to have a wide base to rest my feet, which were within comfortable reach of the ground upon stopping. The first ride was awesome, and before I knew it, I wanted to leave the parking lot for the open roads.

It's very easy to forget that you're riding a scooter when riding the LX 150. I'd always imagined that scooters would be mechanically challenging with shifting gears, pedals to push, levers to pull, and numerous distractions that would pull me away from the idea of simply getting from point a to point b. While "other" scooters may have those annoyances, riding a Vespa is truly a lesson in simplicity. You start, you twist, and you go. After quickly getting a feel for your center of gravity and your level of comfort with the machine, you can easily let yourself enjoy the freedom of being outdoors and aboard an incredibly responsive vehicle.

I found that the Vespa was ideal for traffic situations because I was not concerned about changing gears when I was concerned about changing lanes. As opposed to driving a car, I had 360 degrees of view to see where I was going - no blind spots! I found that the Vespa was ideal for getting around congested streets because its size afforded me the ability to get around loading/unloading vehicles, something that surely would have brought a cab to a halt. And, may I add, its size was duly appreciated when looking for a parking space; something that pained me when in four-wheels proved to be a snap when on two-wheels!

For me, the LX 150 was an exercise in amazement since it had so much to offer and was so full of wonderful surprises.

One of the first things that amazed me, aside from the aforementioned joys of riding the LX 150, was the amount of storage space afforded by this bike. There is not only a glove box in the front that's ideal for various odds and ends, but ample space under the seat, and an amazing shopping bag hook at the front of the seat that's perfect for bringing home groceries. In addition, I was lucky enough to be riding a bike outfitted with a top-case, which is perfect for a 2nd helmet or more than enough for a day's worth of bundles.

Besides the ride and storage space, I was amazed by the economy of the bike. At $4,000+ it's not a cheap investment. However, when I learned that the average city rider fills up only about once every 3 weeks with about $5 in gas, I quickly figured out that an average cab commuter with a $20/day RT commute could buy a Vespa a year and still be saving money by using the bike - and that's not even counting the weekends!

In addition, the bike is not only financially economical; it's environmentally economical too! The bike uses less gas than the average automobile, takes up less space, and spares us the need to use gas-guzzling four-wheeled modes of transportation. Its load-bearing single-steel chassis combined with a high-performance engine makes for the perfect getaway vehicle when looking to escape the confines of the concrete jungle and explore the wonders of life outside the city.

To put the bike to the test, I decided to wake up early, REAL early, and go for a full day of riding. I was in Miami for a conference and thankfully had the day off. The sun was shining; I had my buddy's 2006 LX 150, a full tank of gas, and a hankering for a cup of coffee. I started by scooting around downtown Miami taking in all the smells, sights and sounds afforded by riding a Vespa. I found a great restaurant, had an amazing cup of coffee, a bite to eat, and I was ready to go for a long day of riding!

My goal was to put myself and the bike to the test. I quickly left Miami and was on my way to Fort Lauderdale, about a 30-minute car ride. After just a few minutes of being on I95 I learned one of the limitations of the LX 150. It was great around town, but not made for the driving nightmare of the Floridian Autobahn. I quickly exited this non-friendly thoroughfare and found myself taking a more circuitous route. Luckily, my friend had his GPS in the glove compartment and so I wasn't so worried about going off the "beaten" path.

Well, it only took a few minutes to realize that this is what scooting is all about. Instead of sucking exhaust for 30 minutes, I spent an hour exploring all that one could enjoy between "point A" and "point B." I stopped for a snack; I took some great photos, and I soon realized that instead of getting to Fort Lauderdale, I was exploring the way to Fort Lauderdale - something that only can be appreciated when on two wheels and with the conversation-inspiring style of a Vespa LX 150.

From Fort Lauderdale I went up to Palm Beach, explored the Intercoastal, and soon realized that what could have been a short 90-minute car ride became a relaxing 4-hour private tour of Florida. In essence, if you need to go long distances in a hurry, use a car. However, if you need to get somewhere, and want to get there with a story to share, there's no other option than on an LX 150.

The great thing about the LX 150 was the fact that when I needed the speed, the bike performed. When I needed the agility, the bike performed. And, when I didn't need to fill up on gas, one could say that that the bike's efficiency truly performed!

In conclusion, the LX 150 is a wonderful machine designed for everyone from the daily commuter, to the weekend-warrior, to the young hipster, to the experienced two-wheeled rider. The LX 150 offers a comfortable ride, a powerful engine, a responsive steering system, and most importantly, and a ton of fun each and every time.

You shouldn't be wondering whether you should be buying an LX 150, the only question you should be asking yourself is what color you want!

Great review of the LX 150. We hope you took the A1A from Miami to Fort Lauderdale and up to Palm Beach. We have 2 of them and ride the roads of South Florida. Check out our blog, http://heinznfrenchie.blogspot.com/, where we rode from Fort Lauderdale to Boca Raton and back. We have some nice photos of our trip. We also have some good tips for new riders.
