Good Points: Built in SCSI and IDE
Bad Points: No power supply redundancy, no management software for Solaris
General comments: Intel L440GX+ Server Board is a very nice looking big motherboard in Advanced ATX form factor (it needs full tower case or server chassis like U2).
This motherboard supports all 100MHZ FSB Intel Pentium II and Intel Pentium III processors on Solot 1.
It has 2 slots for processors, 4 slots for ECC SDRAM memory, 2 onboard SCSI channels (Ultra SCSI 2 and Ultra Wide SCSI 2), 2 IDE channels that can be used for CD/DVD-ROMs, Hard Drives ant etc, integrated Intel Express PRO100+ NIC and Cirus Logic GD5480 built in display adapter with 2M SGRAM.
Also, there are available BIOS updates, management tools, manuals and etc on the Intel web site.
There is very good tool for Windows NT Server (works on 2000 and 2003 Server) for managing the server, you can see there temperature of motherboard and processors. Unfortunately this tool does not support fresh versions of Solaris.
No redundancy for power supply and only 2M for integrated display adapter makes this board for servers for not critical applications and not with to graphical GUI Operating System.
This board has 6 32bit PCI slots including special long slot for SCSI RAID controller.
I use this board with Solaris 10 Operating System and enjoy good response and performance.
My server is based on Compucase full tower, X2 Intel Pentium IIIE 800 processors, DVD-ROM, 512M ECC registred SDRAM, 80G IDE hard drive and 9G, 18G 10K RPM UltraWide SCSI drives (that are currenly out of use).
I use it with 3COM ParalelTasking III NIC.
I recommend server based on this board for internal use in small business, applications like: file sharing, print sharing, domain controller, DHCP and DNS server, WEB server, data base server (only for data bases with not very much queries and about 10-15 clients). It works Great with Solaris and Windows 2000 Server.
