Good Points: local pub with a children's menu.
General comments: I recently went for a meal with my 5 year old son at The Nag's Head, Thornton on the 20th aug 2008, I was told by management that I could not order a meal for us both as I was the only adult ordering. When I questioned this, I was told that because I had joined the company of my family who had arrived earlier for a drink, I was told that they would only be allowed to serve an adult meal and a child's meal if one other adult ordered too. When I questioned this I was told that if I had arrived on my own with my son, then there would be no problem in serving us. I cannot understand this seemingly ludicrous rule. My family have drank in this pub for over 50 years and I am appalled with this service. I have photographic evidence that is displayed outside the pub premises which states children will be admitted to the premises only when dining with an adult. So why was I not allowed to order a main meal for myself and my 5 year old son? I was then told that they would not serve me with any more drinks unless I had another paying adult to order a meal with me!
Pub has a children's menu but it seems as though they are doing their best to discourage families with young children from eating and drinking there. Unfortunately, I had no option but to leave the nags head with a very upset 5 year old. I will not be returning to the pub and will not be recommending it to my friends and family.

I've been in there a number of times and the food cooked by their local chef is superb. I always got well looked after with the food. The drink is served by very friendly bar staff and the locals that congregate are very polite and friendly. Pub is very clean, bright and fresh. I know the landlord, who says he was taught French by Gerard Houllier, and he is a sound bloke. The bands that play at night are very good and there is a quiz midweek and a curry club. There is a darts board and a pool ta ...

The Nag's Head in Thornton, Merseyside is becoming a regular "haunt" on a Sunday. A nice lazy day. A wonderful meal, and even the beer is "excellent".
My family stopped me from going for Sunday lunch because I always had something to moan about. (Grumpy Old Men?)
I'd heard this local pub did excellent meals, but would it stand up to the "Grumpy" Test?
...It passed all the tests with flying colours!
The waitress tells you "5 or 10 minutes wait Sir. That OK?"
You get your table "lai ...
