“Couldn't have been any worse”

Truly awful service from start to finish. Despite having the highest level of cover (aimed at long journeys) we, a family of 4 +dog, were left stranded at the roadside of a dual carriageway by Green Flag, 500 miles from home in temperatures of 25+. The only option they would offer (despite the policy offering options) was for us to ride in the tow truck with our dog shut in the car behind! I work for a large recovery operator in the South and the way we transport dogs is exactly they way you did prior to breaking down. I am not sure what part of the country your incident occured but the reasons are the next customer may have allergys to dogs and also control of animals ie we don't want yapping barking dogs as they can be distracting or at worst jump around. The driver only has your word that your dog wouldn't do that and wouldn't risk the safety of theuir truck. As a dog owner myself I wouldn't dream of transporting dogs in other peoples vehicle's. On top of all that it's the drivers who pick up the tab for any cleaning that may be required after carrying dogs inside the cab! If i was sent to you i would have given you the same option for your dog, regardless of what breakdown company you use..

Thanks for your comments. The dog not being allowed in the pick up truck was not the main, or only, issue. Green Flag were supposed to offer options, including the provision of a hire car, which they didn't do.

They wanted us, a family of 4, to spend 3 days in a cramped pick up truck.They also insisted that it was safe for the dog to be transported in the hot car - which it clearly wasn't & it would have been unlawful to do such a thing. The local company were not able to even start the journey back on the day we broke down. Essentially the only ‘option' GF gave to us was not tenable, & so they did not meet their commitments to us. (we have the highest level cover which is aimed at long journeys.?

Interestingly neither the taxi driver nor the car hire firm had any objection to a dog in the car; neither do bus and train operators. So maybe the allergy reason is rather over-blown. And just as for humans, seat belts/harnesses and floor mats & seat covers can be used.
But even if the dog had been allowed in the pick up truck, 3 days would not have been a reasonable solution.

Avoid Avoid Avoid -This is the first year we have been with this company having previously been with the AA for over 10 years. I This company has so many get out clauses when you ring and tell them that you are broken down. They ask you questions on the phone and then send aout a booklet with 33 pages of more exclusions. “9 hours and still waiting!!”

I broke down at 6:00pm on a Friday on M6 near Birmingham. Call centre operator based in Leeds didn't recognise 'M6' and needed the name of a nearby town. Green Flag mechanic attended at 8:00 and was unable to identify why the car wouldn't start, and called in for a recovery. First promise was that someone would be with us within 90 mins. Friday 19th June 2015. I called green just before 11:30 am. They said they would with us within the hour as I was on the m1 with my dog. And motorways make you top priority. The highway patrol had to contact them in the end and they finally arrived just after1:00pm. “Safely transported home”

I suffered a shoulder injury while on holiday in Wales and was in great pain and unable to drive. Green flag arranged for me to be driven all the way back home to Yorkshire with my car towed behind on a trailer. All the staff that I spoke to on the phone were helpful and efficient. Recently, I have needed to rely on their rescue and recovery service twice in a couple of weeks - different cars and different breakdown problems in different parts of the country.
