“Money grabbing company with poor service and poor...”

Written on: 18/05/2013

Can I reccomend no one uses RAC for their car breakdown cover. I've just tried to cancel my policy (which has over 6 months left to run) and they won't give me a refund - apparently that's part of their terms and conditions (not made clear on their website unless you read the small print of course). I get a refund on my tax disk, a refund on my insurance but not on my breakdown - what a money grabbing excuse for a company. They make the 'cooling off' period of 14 days apparent but not... “Got me up and running quickly”

Written on: 07/05/2013 by kouichisan (8 reviews written)

My Honda Civic broke down on the A1 while going to work. I had no idea where I was and there were no signs on the motorway to indicate accurately either. On top of that, I didn't have a GPS or Smartphone with me. So I called RAC (I have National Recovery Cover). I gave the RAC a number written on one of the white poles on the side of the motorway and indicated roughly where i thought i might be. The mechanic arrived quickly based on the limited instructions I gave. He quickly discovered... (read more)

“Customer dis-service”

Written on: 06/05/2013 by Andypat (1 review written)

A failed wheel bearing meant I was unfortunate enough to need to call the RAC breakdown service. Call 1 - 45 minutes on hold. Incompetent/rude call centre person. Wrong type of service vehicle arrived 3 hours later. Call 2 - 50 minutes on hold. Indifferent call centre person. correct service vehicle turns up 2 hours later despite this now being a 'priority' case. Interestingly the really pleasant and helpful engineer that turned up told me this standard of service was 'par for the... (read more)

“Average waiting time more like 3 hours in my experience”

Written on: 29/04/2013

During the last 2 months I have had to call out the RAC on 2 separate occasions . The first was 4pm mid week in February in the outskirts of Grantham and the second was a Saturday morning in April in Swindon. On both occasions it was roadside breakdowns with traffic going past. On both occasions it was over 3 hours before they arrived. I am even writing this review during the second breakdown to pass the time away and vent my frustration at the lack of service, the RAC website boasts an... (read more)

Been with the RAC for over 6 years and not used them for a long time , used them twice overall. Myself, father and sister are all on full cover. My sister was driving her car and hit the kerb which gave her a flat tyre at night and she could not get the wheel off to replace, As it was on a busy road at night and a lone female who was in a panic and crying. My daughter was stuck in the middle of nowhere in a Gale Force Wind and both her doors had blown open on her car with such force that the locks had flipped upside down and so the doors would not close. No-one in the family was available to get out there to help her and she had to tie a scarf around the door handles to try to keep the door closed and hold on for dear life. “Disappointing response time”

Written on: 15/04/2013

Have been a member since 1989. On the few occasions I have broken down previously the response time has been reasonable, the phone was quickly answered and I was rescued within one hour. This time the telephone response time and recovery time were both poor. A long wait on hold with annoying music and recorded messages at a distressing time simply adds to the anxiety. Despite being in a priority category I had to wait a further 1 and a half hours to be picked up. The patrol man said... (read more)

10.30 a.m on the 12 march 2013 i attempted to call RAC breakdown. After 15 or so minutes waiting the line went dead. I tried again and again and eventually got through after a further 20minutes or so. I was told that someone would contact me re my breakdown. I waited for ages for the call. The weather would have put an enormous strain on any breakdown service. R.A.C have their own patrols, so unusual for an outsider to come to you. R.A.C have a 98% satisfaction rate so I guess you were one of the 2%. Not much fun for you but the snow was exceptional across the country and it must have been very difficult to manage the call load. I have used them many times in nearly 40 years and they have always been spot on. Probably about 12 times.

Having been a member of the RAC breakdown service for 46 YEARS !! I have been deeply saddened and disgusted by the 'service' given to my husband on Saturday 23rd Feb 2013. He has a transit van which broke down, and, although the RAC patrolman was pretty quick to arrive (30mins), his 'checking' of the vehicle was cursory to say the least. He MEASURED the length of the van and said that the van was 18ft long but because there was a metal footstep fitted at the back (measuring 7 inches) he could... (read more)

Well the length of vehicles has always been in the T%C's and if you have had the vehicle recovered before you need to think yourself lucky that you have got away with it for so long. T&C's are issued with every membership but 90% of people never read them. So the moral of the story is. READ THE SMALL PRINT

Sometimes you wonder just why you bothered.....Well save your money on this 'service' and do it yourself. We were let down all the way - riuned holiday, countless calls, poorly repaired vehicle, no suitable replacement vehicle offered, no suitable accomodation offered. But HERE IS THE CRUNCHER - when we complained to the RAC on our return we got a letter from Angela Thompson - Operations Executive no less telling us - and I quote - "...although I have not listened to your conversation with... We have experienced similar completely unhelpful "service" from them and are in the process of complaining to the financial ombudsman as the "service" we have received has been miserable from breakdown to lack of reimbursement - terrible company to deal with.

“Abandon by the road side”

Written on: 28/11/2012

RAC abandon my car at the road side and asked me to take it to a nearest garage unless I upgrade it to the home start package.I was 3 miles away from my home and they seems to think that I driven my car away from home. Never again use their service! (read more)

“Abandoned by the roadside in my wheelchair”

Written on: 25/11/2012 by davidg11 (1 review written)

As a Blue Badge holder I joined the RAC blue badge scheme (RAC Response) so that I had peace of mind in the case of a breakdown. When I did break down I was refused a hire car and told to get a taxi home. I was left by the roadside in sub zero temperatures, in my wheelchair, for one and a half hours and nearly died as a result. I had already spent the previous four hours whilst RAC knew my medical condition was worsening because of their delay. The service provided was scandalous and if it... (read more)

“5 Hours Wait”

Written on: 06/11/2012 by AngryMan99

Had to wait 5 hours after my Van broke down, absolutely disgusting. Made 4 phone calls to check when someone would be out and was told as soon as possible, I find it hard to believe that a company of this size actually took 5 hours for a call out, let's put this into perspective, you could fly to Spain in 3 hrs. Complete and utter joke!!!! (read more)

Car broke down in wet conditions. They wouldn't send anyone unless I paid £85 as it wasn't considered a mechanical breakdown. Had to leave car overnight on main road.Went back next day, still wouldn't start so rang RAC again.Got same reply so had to arrange own towing away to my local garage. The car was diagnosed as an electrical fault and neede a new coil.Rang RAC customer services to complain about the diabolical treatment I had received but to no avail, just got the same reply that I wasn't... “Very poor service ineed!”

Written on: 27/10/2012

I've been with the RAC recovery for 32 years and only needed it three or four times - each time it has been an arduous task just waiting for them to attend. Last night I had a problem with what was probably a faulty water temp sensor and was given a 45 minute attend time... 90 minutes later I rang again to be told it would be a further 45-60 mins. Why couldn't they have called me to let me know this instead of me being sat there like a fool - I made other arrangements and got the car home... (read more)

I totally agree with you,I am still without my camper van and had to find my own way home and at my own expense from Spain with the camping and carravaning European arrival FULL cover, They have offered 225 euros in compensation for their errors but so far I have spent £600 and we have to go back and sort it ourselves, Might as well stood on top of a bridge and thrown the £240 for thr cover over the side for all their cover is worth,
