Good Points: They eventully got me home.
Bad Points: Have had to wait over 3hrs for them and then they wrongly diagnose the fault.
General comments: Unfortunately, I have had to rely on the RAC a few times and have never been satisfied.
On one occasion, my car wouldnt start and it took me 20 mins to explain where I was as I hadn't been to the area before, despite the RAC claims that they can find out where you are by your mobile phone. Even then I ended up pushing the car to a main road so that I would be found.
It took over 3 hours for them to come out to me so in the meantime I checked conections ect. When they finally arrived, I was moaned at for having touched part of the car myself (well if they didnt take 3hrs, I wouldnt have), he then spent about 45 mins messing about with a multi meter and scratching his head before telling me it was the starter motor.
He then bump started the car and I was left knowing little more than if I swtch the engine off, the car cuts out or stalls then it wont start again and they will prob not come out to me again as they have already come out to that fault, not what you want on a 2hr drive!
Upon the advice of the RAC, I changed the starter motor myself at the cost of £120 only to discover that it wasnt at fault and the fault was a £3 battery clamp.
I have had other problems with the RAC but I dont have time to go into them now.
Overall, I'm very pleased that my membership has now expired and I have gone with GEM after reading reviews on here at a fraction of the cost.

I joined the RAC last December on the off chance I may need them. Having called them out three times since it was a good investment. The first time I ran out of petrol. The second my starter motor stopped working. The last time I called them out it was due to damp in the engine due to the heavy rain we have had lately and the cover I put of the car to keep it dry. On each occasion I recieved assistance within an hour from an expert mechanic who new what they were doing. The service was polite a ...

I found the service I received from RAC Breakdown Cover extremely professional and would have no problem recommending the RAC to others.

Broke down in major roadworks on M1 lone female with 2yr old daughter, wheel almost fell off car, was quite shook up and kinda scared as no proper hard shoulder or roadside barrier. Call centre badgered me for exact location even though they have made a point of advertising how they can find you from your mobile signal if lost had to resort to leaving daughter alone in car and sprinting 50 yards down motorway to nearest marker post. Asked for advice about what we should do whilst waiting explain ...

My engine decided to cut out going around a bend. Sadly I lost control and ended up in a ditch somewhere in Lincs. I called RAC and they said they would pick me up in 30mins.
30 mins passed and I received a call sorry your policy does not cover accidents. I pointed out that my engine stopped working which is why I had an accident. They were willing to pick me up and take me within 10 miles off my current location. They had not even looked on the map to see where I was considering all I could see ...

I joined on the internet paying £98. I did not get any documents or membership card. Phoned twice without success. Sent email to membership dept in UK, unanswered. Give them amiss and try another company.

I have used them at least four or five times (12 year old Fiesta I'm afraid) and they have been brilliant (even if I had to wait in the cold for 2 hours one night - but being a single man it can't be helped). one time my battery was flat and the rac guy, came out and checked it fully over (not just restarting and drving off) and then helped me loosen a bolt which the guy in Halfords said I'd need to drill out (saving me £££), offered me an RAC battery but then said it was expen ...

Brilliant service with the RAC, just a bit daft that you have to re-join to get a cheaper price.

I've not used the RAC roadside service very frequently, but they are always very helpful, polite and seem well-equipped. They are usually quick to respond and give a good service.

I broke down in my car when the bolt holding the exhaust on, fell off after going over a speed bump. I called the RAC and within 15 minutes, the RAC van turned up. The chap was extremely helpful, my car was patched up and I was back on the road within 30 minutes. Can't fault the service. Very impressed and only £40 a year.

We have RAC Breakdown Family Membership which cover any of us in any vehicle. Have been a member for 20 years and have used them to tow a car with broken CV joint to a garage, to tighten wheel nuts which worked loose after new tyres fitted (sounded like wheel bearings gone!), also to jump start motorbike when rectifier went. Always found them helpful and polite, would recommend them.

I have only broken down on the road twice in my life (and I drive old cars), so breakdown companies probably love me because they make money out of me. I use to be with the AA and broke down in London on a wet miserable day with the kids in the car. They took ages to come out and I didn't like their excuse so I changed to RAC and have used them once and they came out and towed my car home. Job done. I have been with the RAC for 2.5 years now and will never go back to AA.

Hi, I can recommend the RAC too, they have helped me out on a few occasions over the last 15 years - thank goodness I always have breakdown cover!
Embarrassingly I know nothing about cars and only look under the bonnet every time I need the screen wash topping up! With the cover the RAC provide it's like having my dad around on call just in case I need him, and even better the RAC man doesn't tell me - "You should learn how to look after your car, back in my day we did everything ourselves" l ...

I was an RAC member for 4 years and twice used their service.
The first call out was for a blown head gasket on my wife' old Opel when we were on the way to the airport on a Sunday evening. Despite me explaining the nature of the breakdown (i.e. unfixable at the roadside) the first patrol which came to us after an hour's wait was in a small van. The patrol was a fairly condescending towards me and spent 10minutes testing the engine before confirming what I'd already told the call handler. He ...

It's hard to justify £140 - £170 when for £45 you can get the same cover elsewhere.
But notice the RAC's got the highest points. So if you are likely to breakdown, take the RAC if not the cheapest!

I needed to call the RAC at the weekend after my car broke down. The call was taken very quickly and as i was on my own they promised someone within an hour. I was really impressed as they sent me regular text messages as to when the person was coming. It took 35 minutes and the guy was very nice and polite and fixed the problem quickly for me and was off. Would recommend them to anyone if you want a reliable service with a smile.

After 40 minutes of waiting, I rang RAC Breakdown Cover, as I do have cover with them too. I had broken down in my Chrysler and had originally called Chysler Privilege to come and recover me, which was becoming a regular thing as my car had broken down plenty of times (see Kings Chrysler review). I was told that as it was out of hours they would try and get someone to me as soon as they could but they could not give a time scale even though I am a women, was on my own, and was on a country lane ...
