Rubbish service! I called RAC just before 5pm from M20 maidstone services, yesterday 28/8/2014, a was assured that someone would be with me within 75 mins, I did explain, my rear tyre on my motorcycle was beyond economical repair so please send a vehicle suitable to tow the big motorcycle rather than a patrol to fix it, anyway a patrol rang nr the 75 min deadline and introduced himself as the RAC man in a van with no trailer, to which I told him hes wasting his time, so he made a few calls, and… Read Full Review

“Yay - Financial Ombudsman Services found in our favour!”

Written on: 11/08/2014 by another1959 (3 reviews written)

OK, keep going all of you who have been let down by the RAC. We have just had our case with the FOS settled in our favour. It was a simple case of being sold one thing - then being deigned what was due when needed. Ours was European Breakdown - promised a large vehicle - or 2 vehicles if we broke down as kids, camping gear, bicycles etc. This is all in the contract. When we did break down we were told 1 Clio size vehicle only - this prevented us from proceeding and ultimately ruined or holiday… Read Full Review

I told them not to take my renewal due 1 Aug. I told them on 23 July but they still took £89.77. Now they are refusing to refund it and they won't let me speak to a manager. They say their CRT take complaints but you end up waiting in a queue for over an hour and give up. Looks like I've lost £89.77, I will try my credit card company but below £100 so probably no help. RAC in my experience are a diabolical organisation with no sense of customer service. A guy told me it was my final warning & that he would hang up if I kept asking for a manager. I was polite & never swore. he hung up. Now complained to ombudsman.

The only repair an RAC patrol can make at the side of the road on a tyre is that of a temporary and emergency nature, if a suitable spare is not available, ie not serviceable or not supplied by the manufacturer, and even in this situation the vehicle cannot be driven above 40mph. I don't see what the problem is nor why you are trying to defame the company. You had a flat tyre you called RAC they advised you fit the spare. If you wasn't confident in fitting the spare or just wanted a technician to fit it for you then you should of requested that. Again if it was a temporary spare your vehicle had then that again would have had a maximum 50mph speed restriction.
I've heard GREEN FLAG are really really efficient and quick, maybe give them a try. Lols

I waited 15 minutes on 0800 number on my mobile to speak to customer services. Then I was told the recovery truck would be there at 2 40pm but failed to arrive. “Prompt and efficent service”

Written on: 12/06/2014 by KathleenWeaver (1 review written)

My wife & I were ready to set off by car from Benllech Anglesey and the starter motor failed. I contacted the breakdown service and gave details & I was informed that a patrol would be with me in the next hour, ten mins later I had a phone call direct from the patrol man to say he would be with me within ten mins. As promised he arrived he was very friendly and promptly started to check the car, as suspected a new starter motor was needed. I thought at this point he would tow me to a garage… Read Full Review

This sort of "extra mile" service is of course part of the reason for the steep price (looking at my renewal notice!). But if they can mend at the roadside (they carry lots of generic spares) they will. Most breakdown services on jobs like this tow you to a garage who then will do the job when they get round to it - possibly the next day. How much do you value avoiding hassle and delay?

Major question when buying is how much you value a "patrol" organisation (like RAC and AA who directly employ 1000+ patrols) rather than a "contractor call-out call centre" organisation. When RAC (and AA) are on song (most of the time) the service difference is very noticeable - call centres guided by good diagnostic questions (so they send the right type of patrol or recovery vehicle to you), trained patrols in liveried vehicles (so you know who has arrived!), patrols backed up by their own technical helplines and a range of parts carried (plus ability to source if required).

The adverse comments here would tend to indicate that amongst the huge numbers of breakdowns both organisations handle (I am told each do more than 10,000 a day) they are not always on song. But around 300 reviews for an organisation that does 3 million calls a year - is not a very high review rate.

“awfull”

Written on: 30/05/2014 by glGlover411 (1 review written)

Im not supprised at all by this company, I have been a loyal member since 1987 and called them twice in all that time. Just before xmas 2013 my daughter and partner who is part of my membership was involved in an accident and was quite shaken with cuts and bruises. The weather was hellish with driving rain and freezing cold, I rang the rac as I thought it was part of the service to tow the car to safety as I remember the advertising speel when I first became a member in 1987. I was told by the… Read Full Review

I always thought that it was "Breakdown Cover" and that if you had an accident (as in "crash") they could arrange (but not pay for) towage for you (at their rates - which you would hope would be keen) and that you then claimed those costs off the insurer who did you "Accident Cover". I would be very peeved if my "accident insurance" company refused to pay a post-accident towage fee organised by RAC at RAC rates - which I would expect to be a lot lower than a duress fee paid by someone on the roadside to any old "Arthur Daley" who would tow you.

Checked:
General Exclusion 1 of my policy renewal pack (p14) says: "RAC Membership does not cover: Attendance following a road traffic accident. However, as part of Our Accident Care service, for an additional charge, We can Recover Your Vehicle following a road traffic accident. You may be entitled to recover these costs from Your motor insurer but this will be subject to the terms and conditions of Your motor insurance policy, if applicable. We will assist You in this as part of Our Accident Care service."

I too hate lawyers chasing business! But I guess I do need to check the small print of my own motor insurance cover to ensure they cover towage!

“Long wait”

Written on: 24/05/2014 by Edwardslk168 (1 review written)

I am a community nurse and last night my car broke down just as I finished my last visit at 2130. I rang the RAC and was told there had been a 90 minute wait but things were quietening down and my wait should hopefully be a little less. I was totally on my own at risk of drug addicts attack thinking there may be drugs on board [they'd be very disappointed] Two hours later the RAC finally arrived. I got home at 0100 very tired and disillusioned with the RAC. I am now in the process of looking… Read Full Review

“you are the best!!!”

Written on: 20/05/2014

We have had reason to use the RAC recovery service on two occasions in the last six months and we could not be more pleased with the service we received. Both time the call centre operative we spoke to was polite and helpful and the recovery engineer arrived within 30 minutes of our phone call. On one occasions the engineer spent some considerable time in the freezing cold attempting to fix the problem. We really cannot speak too highly of the service we have received - thank you… Read Full Review

“I'd give them less than one star if I could.”

Written on: 09/05/2014 by GarySu (3 reviews written)

I've been a member for years but haven't had cause to call them out until I changed my car. Now I've called them three times in a year and they've left me stranded for over three hours twice. The second time my girlfriend had to catch a taxi to get to a funeral costing her £90, even though after a three plus hour wait for the RAC (operator apparently sent the patrol to the wrong place) it turned out that it was just some damp on the ignition cables and was fixed in ten minutes. I complained… Read Full Review
