I found the Rac to be totally and utterly incompetent. The customer service was a disgrace. Customer advisers contradicting each other. The person handling my complaint showed no empathy to the concerns I was raising. Her investigation into 'non payment' was one sided and only looked at the evidence the company had. I have had breakdown cover with the RAC for probably 10 years, automatically renewed annually, with direct debit from the same bank. This morning my car wouldn't start, flat battery due to cold and inactivity for a week. “Disgusting poor service by RAC”

Last week the tyre on our car blew out while my son was driving it. He was doing 70mph on the M1 during rush hour. He was lucky that he is an experienced driver and managed to get onto the hard shoulder. He waited 2 and a half hours for the RAC to come out. It was far too dangerous to be sitting in the car so he stood at the side of the road in the pouring rain freezing. He was also understandably very shaken up. “OVERCHARGE FOR RECOVERY”

My husband caught the edge of a kerb and managed to wreck 2 tyres on our car. He rang the RAC and was told it wasn't a breakdown but an RTA. We were charged £183.12 to be picked up and towed 10 miles home. It was an independent local firm that came out who were very quick and efficient. I emailed them a few days later to enquire what their charge was if we had called them out and was quoted £96. “Don't touch RAC”

My advice is not to touch RAC with a barge pole . We took out RAC breakdown cover all in good faith and 4 months later we have to get rid of the car. When we contacted them to cancel the cover we were told we do not give refunds ,or could we transfer it ,or neither can we hold it over. This will be the last time we will ever deal with RAC and put our business with green flag who isn't afraid of giving refunds… Read Full Review

“left for 3 hours - quicker to walk”

RAC breakdown cover, This was the second time we have broken down this year. The first time we were at a motorway services for just over two hours. This time we were left in a pull in by the busy A38 dual carriageway in the cold near newton abbott for 3 hours before a contractor arrived with a tow truck. “RAC let us down”

DO NOT sign up with the RAC (or the AA - as they are just as bad) My wife, our baby, toddler, and grandma had a puncture and the RAC couldn't even be bothered to answer the phone. They tried calling the number for 25 minutes, by which time a passerby had offered to change the wheel for them. We sent a written complaint, which was acknowledged by the RAC Customer Care team, who stated that they would respond within 20 working days, and the RAC failed us AGAIN. “Good service”

As per usual first frost of the year and the car would not start. Called RAC and engineer arrived 27 mins later diagnosed the fault in two minutes, went to collected the new battery, fitted it and tested the cars electrics,recoded the radio also checked the oil and water. “Friendly and there!”

As my mum had insured herself and she was driving my car at the time with me we were covered by the RAC. They got to me within 7 minutes with continual texts to update and a phone call from the driver! I was stuck with a blown out tyre in a mud bath but the driver was as friendly as anything and easily got it fixed. Even though his van got stuck in the mud he kept it entertaining... I broke down rac came out replaced a part which I paid for but the next time I used the car I broke down again with same problem rac came out got car started by pulling something in engine but said I needed to go straight home as it wasn't fixed and he didn't know what was wrong and would break down again so I had to drive 7 miles home with a new born baby and 3 other children terrified that every time I slowed down at a junction etc I would breakdown again. “Terrible Customer Service”

I tried to get a receipt from the RAC for some work that they had done (replacement tyre). It took me 8 calls and 45 minutes and still I had no receipt. They just kept bouncing me back to their very long telephone queue. I'm a lady driver and unfortunately I had a puncture there is no spare with my car, not that I know how to change a tyre.I contacted the RAC I had a very friendly man who handled my call with no fuss at all. I was in no danger as I had got to my local supermarket however they arrived within 20 mins of my call he pumped my tyre up and even seen me safely to my local garage to get it repaired. “Worse service provider ”

My car broke down with family (including 2 young children) in the car at 11am in July. We waited for over 7 hours for the toll van to get to us. And during the wait, we had to wait with the car! My car eventually got collected at 6:40pm but was not delivered at my destination till after 1am (apparently their toll van also broke down on the motorway!!!). “Stranded!”

RAC left me stranded and distraught. I am not a mechanic but I do know that when you hear a grating metal noise and you have smoke coming from your car it is broken. So I pulled to the side of the road and called the RAC who I have been a member with for 2 years and thankfully have never had to call. “Dreadful complaints process”

My car began to show a problem with the battery so I called the RAC into help. The fitted a new premium battery for £108. A month later the problem came back. I guessed their must be something else wrong so called back the RAC to ask for advice. The technician said the battery was dead, and offered to fit a new one (again, for free).
