I have to say I have never had a problem with my RBS student account. In my first year of university, I had no problems, no hidden charges, and no hassle in the branches (telephone was a bit funny but I feel it's a pointless method of banking anyway). I didn't open my overdraft this year as I had no need to. On one stupid occasion, I overdrew by £10 by mistake. And they charged me £30. However, I went into the nearest branch the next day, explained I am a poor stupid student, and they wavered the fee, provided I fixed the balance. This has happened to others I know, and while the charges seem large (all banks are about the same, I'm afraid), as long as you don't kick the butt out of it and are friendly enough, they are nice as they want to keep your custom once your are earning.
I opened an overdraft in my second year, and the only problem I found here was the amount they advertise ( £2750, I think) is in your fourth or fifth year of study, £1250 being the limit for your second year.
If you need a large overdraft straight away, go to another bank, but everything else with the RBS has been straight forward with me so I would recommend them.

    Open, honest and friendly staff.
A large but managable overdraft limit available.
Informed of all the account details clearly e.g. when over draft must be paid back, interest rates etc.

First of all, I keep getting charged and I don't know why. I have had some of the charges reimbursed, but it keeps happening. Also, Royal Bank of Scotland are advertising an overdraft of £2,500 on their website and through the post, but when I enquired about this at my branch, they told me that it isn't the case and couldn't explain why it is advertised. The staff are unhelpful - it is the worst account in the world!

I had a Royal Bank of Scotland student royalties account for three years between September 1999 and July 2003. One day I sat down and went through my incomplete set of statements for that period, and I totted up £600 in bank charges. I must have been charged even more on the statements that I couldn't find.

I was very pleased with the Royal Bank of Scotland when I opened my Student Royalties account. They were the only ones who would give me an account at the time, and the staff were very friendly.

3 years later however, I would not recommend RBS for any account - credit card, savings, anything!! They put extortionate charges through, and reject cheques and direct debits, even when there is money in the account, and you have a hard time getting it back.

Don't rely on the internet to do your ...

I cannot warn you enough. I have had a Royal Bank of Scotland Student Royalties Account with the Glasgow City RBS since 1999. For half that time I have been in constant contact with the branch requesting a refund of illicitly charged maintenance fees, interest charges ( which the account, as a student overdraft, should not have ). The only glimmer of light has been a local branch, I opened the account while studying away, which higlighted the number of charges that had been added. They ( Glasgo ...
