I have found RBS are an awkward bank to use, the overdraft is advertised at an amnount but then only given to you in stages, unerstandable but needs to be clearer when advertised. Internet banking is near impossible. My credit card and Debit card are under two different names??!!
The account was advertised with many perks, free insurance, free rail card. I recieved none of the "Royalties" as not living in Scotland but was told that I could recieve these and also were advertised in my local... (read more)

was told when i upgraded from a current account to a student 1 i would get my overdraft put up to 1000 now they are saying that since im a new customer (which im not) i have to wait 6 months now until they will look at putting my overdraft up

I have to say I have never had a problem with my RBS student account. In my first year of university, I had no problems, no hidden charges, and no hassle in the branches (telephone was a bit funny but I feel it's a pointless method of banking anyway). I didn't open my overdraft this year as I had no need to. On one stupid occasion, I overdrew by £10 by mistake. And they charged me £30. A large but managable overdraft limit available.

First of all, I keep getting charged and I don't know why. I have had some of the charges reimbursed, but it keeps happening. Also, Royal Bank of Scotland are advertising an overdraft of £2,500 on their website and through the post, but when I enquired about this at my branch, they told me that it isn't the case and couldn't explain why it is advertised. The staff are unhelpful - it is the worst account in the world! (read more)

I had a Royal Bank of Scotland student royalties account for three years between September 1999 and July 2003. One day I sat down and went through my incomplete set of statements for that period, and I totted up £600 in bank charges. I must have been charged even more on the statements that I couldn't find. I was very pleased with the Royal Bank of Scotland when I opened my Student Royalties account. They were the only ones who would give me an account at the time, and the staff were very friendly.

3 years later however, I would not recommend RBS for any account - credit card, savings, anything!! They put extortionate charges through, and reject cheques and direct debits, even when there is money in the account, and you have a hard time getting it back.

I cannot warn you enough. I have had a Royal Bank of Scotland Student Royalties Account with the Glasgow City RBS since 1999. For half that time I have been in constant contact with the branch requesting a refund of illicitly charged maintenance fees, interest charges ( which the account, as a student overdraft, should not have ).
