Good Points: 1.9JTD ELX is practical, economical, has a good seat layout, has been reliable and a family favourite.

Bad Points: 1 fuse (lights) blows every 6 months or so - big deal! Injector light came on intermittently for 4 years before I found that the problem was a loose connection to the ECU situated in the passenger footwell...easy fix but used to lose power & drive with no injection.

General comments: Bought our Fiat Multipla 1.9 JTD ELX new (Sep 2000). 2 years later we emigrated to New Zealand and took it with us. We still have it (Mar 2009 at 90,000 miles) - this is a testament to our car's practicality, economy & reliability.
In 9 years the repairs have been : New Front Discs (73,000 miles); New Drivebelt (74,000 miles); New Clutch (75,000 miles); New Glow Plugs (85,000 miles). Cam Belt was replaced at 85,000 miles.
General question for the vehicle manufacturers : Why, since Henry Ford started mass producing in early 1900's, do 99% of vehicles still have the same seat configuration - especially since the Multipla has proven the way in 3-abreast ?

The Fiat Multipla is a design classic - no other car that I have driven fulfils the need to transport up to 6 people + luggage in quite the same way. For example, the vertical sides give plenty of shoulder room and stop drips from landing on the seats in the rain. The 3x3 seating gives a short car that, width allowing, is easy to manoevre. The space frame chassis gives a low centre of gravity, and the firm suspension and the width add up surprisingly fun handling. And while minor bits have br ...

Owned the car for nearly five years. Bought it at nearly three years old. Had most if not all the known regular problems. When they go wrong they are a pain like any car, but when they go right, fortunately most of the time, they are better than anything else like it on the road. When your used to the width thewy are easy to park being short, they tow well as the wheelsare at each corner and they sit squat to the road. Unlike normal people carriers thessuspension is firm so even fully laden road ...

The Fiat Multipla is an excellent family car - would highly recommend and buy again ourselves. We had no problem getting part for our car through independent servicing garage - i.e not Fiat servicing, though have found the fiat garage that we did use for first three years (warranty!!) very helpful. The car is a dream to drive. The exterior does take some getting used to but onc e inside you forget about it! And it kind of grows on you! Our boys love the view from the extra large windows - thoug ...

My Fiat Multipla 1.9 JTD ELX has been off the road for 3 months awaiting spares from Italy. The parts are expected to arrive in another 5 weeks. I doubt that they will ever materialize. This is a current model, not some obscure model from the 30's.

Engine required a total rebuild at 20,000 miles.
Buy a Honda FRV or a Ford, or an Iso Grifo (probably get the spares quicker), or a Facel Vega.
