Like most people I imagine, I joined rescuemy car because of the very attractive price. I'm often driving different cars all over the country so took out the top package (about £80) which included personal cover allowing me to receive assistance with any car I'm travelling in, and national recovery back to my house from whereever I am in the country. The first time I had to call them out, due to power steering failure about 60 miles from home, I rang the helpline and in all fairness the... (read more)

I will try and be as objective as you can - you decide. A couple of weeks ago I purchased a Transit 350 Luton van, fairly good c0ndition, engine spotless and mechanically seems good. As I am going to be using it quite a bit, it seemed to make sense to have breakdown cover just in case. I googled for "van breakdown service" and found a compare-type site, RescueMyCar seemed to offer great value and did have the three categories of Car, MotorBike and Van. so far so good. Took out this insurance policy nearly a year ago as wife and I were splitting up and I needed the security of a roadside assistance/recovery service. So glad I did. Car overheated on my way to London on the A303 as the water pump had failed. Managed to pull off and gave them a call. Friendly operator took my details and location. Also took my card details as I had elected for the 'excess' policy which cost just £20 plus an excess of £40 if you needed to call them out (this is clearly... (read more)

After my car died on an A63 slip road this week, my call for help was answered very promptly and professionally. I received a text within minutes, saying that the recovery company, RRS, would be with me within 45 mins. They were there in less than 20 minutes and had me and the car on the way to my local garage in good time. The guys were extremely helpful, knowledgeable, polite and demonstrated a real care for the job. I'm delighted to recommend Rescue My Car and RRS Recovery Services. (read more)

Good Morning,
We have two types of policies, The XS policy and Non XS policy.
Our XS policies have a cheaper yearly premium than our non XS policies. It seems that the policy that you have taken out is the 40 pound XS policy.
There is box to tick when taking out our policies online to take this XS off.

This breakdown cover is the sort that - just when you need to use it - costs you more. Rationally weighing this up at the outset of the policy, this seems fair enough. In practice, when you have just had a traumatic experience and need a tow to a garage, having to cough up a wodge of extra cash feels like you are being kicked when you are down. (That is not in itself a criticism of the policy but a reflection on human nature). In my recent experience, I had done all the standard safety... (read more)

Initial contact/signing up with RescueMyCar was faultless. However, when I had reason to call RescueMyCar (I had to turn around in a single lane with steep ditches either side late at night, in the pitch dark and freezing temperatures. A turn too soon... My experience with RescueMyCar was one of the worst I have had from a car rescue company, if not the worst. I purchased this online via Confused.com in June 2012, with no 'No Policy Excess' panel in sight. And I never miss a box that needs ticking to avoid being stung or spammed. What the 'No Policy Excess' does is giving you the option to opt out of paying £40 every time you have to call out someone, in turn raising your premium to compensate for this. I never saw this panel but if I had,... (read more)

I disagree, reader. This information was not made available to me at point of purchase so I stand by my comment. I would have not missed out ticking a straightforward box that asked me to pay £40 every time I break down! Seems little unreasonable, really, and economically completely pointless.
The information was then emailed to me but sadly I had not realised this in time to use my 'cool-off' period and cancel this policy.
Moral of the story, don't get caught out like I did and be aware of all these added costs!

We don't charge £40 for the reason stated in your review. The £40 you were charged would have been because the policy you have purchased is the XS policy.

My first experience as l have never had to call you out as yet! A Very nice lady on the phone took all my details, location etc. The local garage then called me within five minutes and half an hour later the breakdown truck was there. My car could not be fixed at the roadside so it was towed to my designated garage. I then went off to work knowing it was all in hand. It is never a nice experience to breakdown but it was all so well controlled and all so efficient that it took away the... (read more)

Have to pay £40 excess - which I only realised too late. I got two policies so have wasted the money twice! Fortunately we we're close to home when we broke down so towed it ourselves - save your money and spend it on a proper company! Wish I'd read the reviews first...... (read more)

The XS on the policy means that for a cheaper premium, you pay the first £40 towards the callout if have you broken down and need assistance. All of our policies have an option to opt out of the £40XS, whcih in return, would change the price of the annual premium. The XS is fully explained in the terms and conditions prior to purchasing.
If you are unhappy with the XS policy, you can upgrade your policy to have the XS taken off. All you would need to do is contact the Customer Services Team on 08452034700

I had an absolutely terrible experience with this 'car breakdown ' company ,Rescuemycar.com. My advice to anyone would be do not get cover with these people. I was staying at my sisters with my 3 young children all under 4. I couldn't start my car so rang the company who explained that i would have to pay £40 excess charge, something that i didn't know when i signed up! They sent a tow truck out, no car expert to look to see what the problem was. Unfortunately my car was parked on the side... (read more)

At RescueMyCar.Com, our agents come out prepared to recover. They should never leave the breakdown scene without providing the correct assistance. If the agent is unable to recover the vehicle due to tight roads etc, they will do their best to provide an alternative way to move the vehicle. I am sorry to hear that the agent didn't do this. With regards to paying another £40 xs for further assistance, we wouldn't normally charge this, as we would have got the agent to reattend free of charge.
I would be more than happy to look into this further for you if you would like to write in via our email address, ClaimsTeam@ncionline.co.uk

I have just been stung with this same hidden cost. The lady on the phone told me that it is in the general terms of cover. Having now got home (thankfully the fault was minor and I was on my way in minutes) I have checked the entire policy details and general terms. It states if applicable an excess will need to be payed as detailed in your schedule of cover. However there is absolutely no referesnce on there that I have to pay one and most certainly not an amount either! I will be dealing with someone else as soon as possible from now on!!!
The recovery truck that was sent was from a company called Green Meadow the guy was on time, very polite, knowlegeable, and fixed the car very quickly. He even took the time to expliain to me what had gone wrong. I think I will be looking into them!

I've had to call rescuemycar out twice in the past year, once for an accident, once for a breakdown in the middle of the night. On both occasions the operator has been friendly and reassuring, contacting me quickly to let me know whats happening. The guy who came out for my accident was really friendly and dropped me off at a friends house. They took my belongings out of the car for me as the insurance company picked my car up before I got a courtesy car, but let me know and were lovely when... (read more)

We have never needed to call them out..yet! But I praise them on not trying to up my premium each year like almost all other companies do. They at least appreciate loyal custom. I hope if we do have to call them out, they don't disappoint.

I paid £76.99 last november for european breakdown cover. Today my husband broke down in Germany it took over half an hour to get through only to be told we were not covered for Europe even though I paid for the cover and it is on the documents. It cost us over £800.00 pounds to get towed by a Germany recovery company and the vehicle repaired. A nightmare to be avoided at all costs. (read more)

Dear nicola1234,
I am sorry to hear that you were told you were not covered for assistance in Germany. If you have paid for the level of cover and have the correct doucments, we wouldn't have refused assitance. If you would like to email us at ClaimsTeam@ncionline.co.uk along with your registration, and name, I would be more than happy to look into this for you.

If you buy national recovery that is NOT what you get. You get a drive to the nearest garage, and they get 24 hours to charge you whatever they like for the repair! I'm not making it up; for national recovery insurance you get a trip to their mates within 10 miles! (read more)

For some faults, it is just a local recovery to the nearest garage. These faults would include, putting petrol in deisel, broken or lost keys, and punctures with no spare. We also provide a local level of cover which means you are entitled to local recovery only for a cheaper premium. We do not know of any garages in the area of where you break down, and it is usually your responsibility to find a garage. If you have a garage that you usually go to, then we can recover the vehicle there. Some of our agents may be able to fix the vehicle at one of their depots if you agree to it, and must have adequate funds for the repairs.
If you are on a long distance journey and the fault is minor, and it is something that can be repaired in the same day, then we would recover to a local garage in order to undertake the repairs. If the fault is something more serious and cannot be fixed within a reasonable amount of time, we would then look at recovering the vehicle back to your home address/original destination. We also provide overnight accomadation, and alternative transport if the vehicle cannot be fixed in the same day.

The £40 that you pay would be the XS, and it sounds like you have taken out an XS policy. Having the XS on the policy means you pay the first £40 towards the callout if you require breakdown assitance, in return for a annual premium.
The terms and condtions fully explains the XS and there is an option to opt out of it prior to purchasing.
With regards to someone maybe not turning up, I am not exactly sure what you mean by this? Would you be able to explain in more detail so we could rectify any further problems?

I have suffered a breakdown some days ago. When I called they were not able to find my policy and they denied assistance. I had to call a garage and pay the expense of the breakdown van on my own. As I had to wait one week for the broken piece in that one I called them back (3hours on the phone) and arranged another van to take me to another garage. That was ok, some delay with the van, but ok. I sent a claim asking them to pay compensation for having ignored me, and the invoices for the van... (read more)

I have been with this company for 2 years now. I have used the call out 3 times now. Twice for a flat battery and once for keys locked in boot of car. The garage they used turned up on all 3 occasions within 40 minutes. And fixed the problem without any fuss. Yes they are cheap. And really cheap if you choose the £40 excess option...which some people failed to see on their application. I have excess free and can't fault the company. Have to admit was a little concerned about the out of... (read more)

I was a fool to buy their breakdown cover saving 15 odd quid, hoping that if not as good as AA or RAC they would be at least OK. They don't have a customer service, if there is any I couldn't get hold of it. Call out charges are unbelievable. I moved back to AA for 15 pounds more after 3 months. (read more)

I’ve just taken out a RescueMyCar policy as I think it’s a great price to cover the possibility of that remote event.
I’ve not broken down in 5+ years, and never in the current car, and I think the £40 excess is a brilliant incentive to people to keep their cars tip-top and avoid unnecessary call-outs.
Which the rest of us have to pay for indirectly, BTW; it’s insurance, after all.
I’ll just have to live in the hope that the rescue service is as brilliant as the price, if ever push comes to shove. And review it in the event.
