Good Points: 1.7CDTi performance better than previous model, with more power at low revs and a wider power band
Bad Points: Thirstier than previous 1.7CDTi, 42 to 47mpg compared to 52 to 60mpg from the old engine. I wonder how they got their improved 'official' CO2 figures? Styling is down to personal taste, but the interior is an ergonomic disaster area. Heating and ventilation controls are particularly awkward to use; and if you lower the steering wheel, say goodbye to your view of some of the instruments. All-round visibility continues the trend of being just a bit worse than the previous model. I've had trouble with the tailgate lock, and the drivers door mirror adjuster, doesn't.
General comments: The Vauxhall Astra 1.7CDTi Elite is all very average.
Interior ergonomics just went back thirty years. Oh, and so did the styling!
