“Usable if you are mechanically inclined and persistent.”

Written on: 13/01/2013 by Hughtoo (1 review written)

I have had my 2300 for about 7 years. Have had to disassemble and clean the fuel petcock a couple times. The breaker failed and wouldn't carry a sufficient load so I bypassed that. I may burn up the generator one of these days. I'm planning to leave town in a couple weeks with my RV so I tried to start it and the recoil starter spring broke. I have not been able to find a replacement part. I also have gas leak if I leave the petcock on with the motor not running. ~ Final judgement. ... (read more)

“I most agree with the other owners, Thumbs down”

Written on: 04/11/2012 by supplymaster

I bought this generator a while back and had no reason to use it but did start it on occasion just to make sure it would work if needed. Just in running it to check it out I've had to fix the carb. reset the idle speed over and over again. now all the gas leaks out because the shut off valve quit working. I removed it to find the seals were all installed sloppy. I now feel I should replace it before i really do need it. It's bad that you can actually break down some thing just by testing it.... “A Terrible Generator!”

Written on: 30/08/2012 by raullozada

I live in Puerto Rico and I bought the UST 5500W Generator in anticipation of Tropical Storm Isaac and other power outages that often happen here. I couldn't even start the generator, the gas was leaking from the carburetor. Then, I returned the unit for another (after receiving an exchange code, of course), and now this other unit does not even shut off when I want it to. I have to wait until the gas runs out after shutting off the fuel line. This is two brand new units that do not work. I... (read more)

“Don't waste your $ buying this UST GG2300 generator ”

Written on: 02/02/2012 by KJMsgt

Purchased a new UST GG2300 at PEP BOYS. The 20 amp circuit on this UST GG2300 generator would NOT run the same load as an ONAN generator with a 15 amp circuit. I brought the UST GG2300 generator back to PEP BOYS and was told NO RETURNS!!! on these generators. Generator ran 8 hours, carb malfunctioned. Replaced the carb with a new carb. The replacement carb was also defective. A third carb corrected the defect. Generator ran 50 hours, started to go intermittent. This item is STANDARD... (read more)

“UST gg2300”

Written on: 03/12/2011 by johnvan (1 review written)

I bought 2 of them 2 years ago, started them bith up about 1 1/2 years ago and now can't get them going. Needed them this past week and couldn't get either one going. On one a piece of the gas handle broke off when I turned it on, doesn't matter anyway as they don't run. I was really disapointed when I could not find a customer rep or tech support. All I can say is be careful of what you buy. (read more)

I live in my RV and use the 1200 watt every day. It runs about 10 hours minimum daily. I do weekly oil changes and clean the air filter twice a week. I've only had to replace the petcock once. I'e been runing it for a year and a half with only a $10 replacement part. I would say that i'm happy with my purchase. Maybe everyone else is not happy because they are trying to run to much on not enough wattage. (read more)

Piece of garbage. Ran 200 hours within the first month of usage then the valve broke off and was pushed through the cylinder head by the piston. The metal was cheapy, even the cylinder head. I've seen aluminum cans with thicker aluminum. Anyway, a call was put into the importer in California and they said it was a limited warranty of 60 hours and anything after that is considered excessive. We filed a complaint with the US Product and Safety Commission. Real simple to do. I suggest... (read more)

I'm sorry, but spending $300 for a generator that basically is a throw away/paper weight model after using for 10 days is just plain irresponsible! Getting any support from their toll free number is a joke. I went through the kill switch my first weekend using on a camping trip.

2 more part replacements for the second time I used this piece of cr_p machine. Now, no warranty support, and no electric coming from this unit. Never, ever again will I waste a penny on these lame Chinese made... (read more)

The UST GG2300 usually starts on the first pull and ran great for awhile. After about 200 hours the engine block is leaking oil and a spring on the throttle broke. It's a fairly quiet unit but that's about it.I have a Wisconsin powered unit from the 60's I bought used that I have thousands of hours on and there's no problem. The same for my Onan.

I'd save the few hundred more and buy a real Honda, or get a used American generator for half the price that you can at least find parts for.

But... (read more)

2 circuits should be split between the 240V plug and the 120V plug, instead, the 240v plug runs on the same circuit as two of the 120V plugs, which could easily overload and flip the breaker, IF you could get the 120/240V circuit to actually switch to 240V.

This UST GG2300 generator failed to supply even the most basic power needs. My refrigerator comes on, but the lights are dim and does not operate at full capacity (food in the freezer still thaws out), and it will not support a... (read more)

Written on: 15/12/2006 by Ulysses (8 reviews written)

Against my better judgement and my own advice I bought a cheap generator. Really cheap. Both of my Honda eu2000s no longer work and I needed something to get me over until I decide what to do next (Yamaha YG2800i perhaps?). I bought this UST GG2300 2300 watt generator from Pep Boys auto supply on sale for $230. So far, after about 10 hours of use, I'm very happy with it. It has an OHV engine and is very easy to start. The frame is very sturdy and I have found nothing cheap or chincy... (read more)

Ulysses's Response to Ulysses's Review

Written on: 16/02/2007

Here it is; two months later and the little UST GG2300 Generator still works great. I have about 200 hours on it now. After my 5000 watt genny with the Honda GX270 busted a valve, I went and bought the GG5500 for about $350. It did have a problem with the float sticking in the carburetor, which was easy to fix, and UST sent me a replacement carb. I've seen the GG2300 for as little as $190! As a matter-of-fact, my wife went back to Pep Boys and got an adjustment (less than 30 days from purchase), so that's what we actually ended up paying. So far I like the GG5500 better than my Lifter 5000 watt genny with the Honda engine--the UST is actually easier to start, quieter, and seems to have a better muffler and air cleaner. It also came with wheels and fold-down handles, and a 30 amp plug. It has nice toggle type circuit breakers, which can be reset right away if needed. It holds exactly one quart of oil (not 37.2 oz like it says on it), and no funnel is needed to add oil--just pour it in. It also has some kind of voltage regulation, which works well, except for start up on big loads, but it runs more stuff than either of my other 5000 watt gennys, and it has a big gas tank too! It seems to burn about 1/2 gallon per hour most of the time, at around half load. Oh yeah, and it also comes with four decent quality 120 volt outlets that actually hold plugs. And it has 10 amp DC for battery charging, if anyone cares to burn that much gas to charge a battery ;-) The choke is a little hard to get to on the GG5500, but you get used to it. Both the GG2300 and GG5500 use a little oil between changes, but the oil is still transparent after 50 hours. Maybe these cheap Chinese OHV engines are not quite Honda's, but they seem to be pretty darn close. It will be interesting to see how many hours the engines last.

I bought the UST 950W generator and was also quite happy. It ran for about a week continuously during a severe wind storm/power outage. This year during an ice storm I went to start it and the entire start mechanism/pullstart came apart and some small plastic parts fell out broken when I removed the pull start. I started the generator with a 5/8 socket hooked to the bolt on the fly wheel but need to get a replacement pull start kit. I only paid $79 for the generator and air compressor combo kit at pep boys. The 950W will run a refrigerator and 50 inch TV and thats about it. Worked for us.
