Well what can I say. I feel complete relief. Relief that after banking with them nearly nine months now and putting up with them being completley useless I now can take no more. Instead of putting up with this shambles, one thing after another and saying 'maybe it will improve' I have now come to the conclusion that after nearly 40 years on this planet, banking with Santander has been the worst mistake I have made in a long time. After a recent account shutdown and re issue of cards due to... (read more)

I have been with Santander for 2 years but i am so frustrated by unreasonable bank charges to the point that this month i'm closing all accounts. I would like to kindly advise any person banking with Santander, to be aware of the following extremely expensive bank fees that will apply to your Santander accounts: 1. Un-arranged overdraft fee. I had used only £15 of un-arranged overdraft fee on my 123 account, for only 14 days and I was charged £70 of unarranged overdraft fee. So you... (read more)

Opened a business account very recently. Twice now they have stopped payments causing huge embarrasment. Final straw was Friday when I made 14 wage payments and only 3 went through and they blocked the rest citing sudden inexplained activity on the account --the account has only been opened 3 months! I called them straight away only to be told there was no problem and faster payments can take up to 16 hours to clear. Absolute rubbish --there was a huge amount of money involved here -- I... Shocking. Couldn't spot a multi payment so they re did it and ended up paying my employees twicr. When I went ltd and set up the account I set up a standing order for myself, cos it was of a certain sum they decided to block the account and not tell me. All my cheques came back. Now they tell me that their cards only work in certain machines and get pin locked if they're not compatable. Having used Santander business banking for 18 months I have had to close the account on the grounds that "Santander" will not accept money to be paid into the account from my business!!! How ridiculous is that? I run a popcorn and candy floss business which customers obviously pay in cash, mainly £1 coins. But lately when paying my takings into Santander they have not allowed me to pay my takings into the account. Therefore I have had no choice than to move my banking elsewhere! How useless... These guys are truly woeful. I use the Kendal branch for my business banking and they are the rudest and worst staff I have ever had the displeasure to deal with. Firstly I bank a lot of cash. I have to use the machines which is fair enough however when they are down the counter staff won't help me. They should provide envelopes to put the cash into the machine but refuse and tell me to use my own plain envelopes. When I asked them to change some pound coins into notes so I could bank... Good things first: Santander answer the phone quick enough and are free. Bad: their implementation of 'faster payments' is poor - no-one seems to know when a payment is 'faster' and when it is 'slower'. Even worse, their implementation of online 'payment reference' is a joke. Obviously you should be able to enter in a payment reference so the recipient knows immediately which bill you are paying. You can only do this ONCE however with Santander, so next time you pay a different bill from... (read more)

Exactly the same issues around process for me - taking too long to process (2 months in the end), writing letters with terribly poor grammar in them which made the requests unclear, and requesting the kind of information about the business that is normally reserved for larger organisations. To my shame, I recommended opening a business savings account to my partners, after banking (personal) with Abbey since 1990. What a mistake! The hoops we had to jump through to get an account opened were astonishing. The final roadblock was them insisting that a non-executive director, with less than 0.025% holding of the company shares, that had no access nor authority to the company's books, and is a US citizen - domiciled in Silicon Valley had to present himself at a branch with two... Been with them for 6 years, started as Abbey National. Good rates of interest have become derisory, like most, but my biggest gripe is all the effing obstacles they put in your way in the name of security. The latest farce is the (soon to be compulsory) one time passcode, for which you need a mobile phone which is with you and working at the time you perform the transaction. Their online statements show balances even when selected not to, and have the credits and debits columns the opposite... (read more)

I can't agree more with all of the appalling reviews that have been posted here. As for the reviewer who had his account closed and cheques sent out. This happened to more then 10,000 customers and Santander breached their own terms and conditions when carrying out this purge of older accounts, less active accounts. They are hoping that no one will follow up on this.
As far as other complaints, these are a caused by a strict call time policy implemented by Santander to ensure efficiency.... (read more)

The big attraction initially was free banking, but Abbey -- sorry, Santander -- has been consistently unhelpful and has applied charges that I think are unreasonable and that friends and colleagues have stated have not been applied in similar situations by their banks.
No Abbey branch can handle any business transactions, even paying in a cheque, and I realise that in this case, with "free" banking, you definitely get what you pay for: nothing.

Bad: Very difficult to do international payments through abbey since one has to request a form, wait until it is delivered in the post, fill it in, return it and then wait for the money to be sent. EVERY TIME! This is a real pain for an import company like mine.
Good: no fees on having the account. This account would be fine if one only did business within the UK.

Abbey Business Accounts has the most abysmal administration I have ever encountered in any organisation, not merely just banks. If you only want on-line, and never need anything else, then you'll be OK, otherwise its akin to dealing with a sponge.
