Went for the first time at night. Really enjoyed the whole evening. Kept warm with the mulled wine, and the food was very tasty. The snow added to the whole experience. I have really entered into the Christmas spirit now. Thank you Manchester, who needs to travel when we have this on our door step.

This is the second time we have been and last year felt more enjoyable than this year. This was mainly because they seem to have spread out the locations of the stalls more and stopped you being able to wonder around whilst you drank your mulled wine. this year I felt crammed in to small fenced off areas in order to have a drink. Last year appeared more well organised and the stalls were in one main area which was all fenced off so you could look at the stalls whilst enjoying a mulled wine. Quite expensive. but still enjoyable, just not as special as last year due to the change of layout.

Overall very disapointed lots of overpriced 'craft goods' like hand made necklaces, £1.50 for a small cake, £3.00 for a small bar of marzipan, £13.00 for 4 drink coasters, £50.00 for a medium jumper. There seemed to be lots of people milling around not buying much which is hardly suprising some of the market stall owners looked fairly miserable which made you stay away from their particular stall, some of your local markets offer a better range of goods and offer better value for money.

I dont think its just me, has anyone else noticed that the sausages are no longer real meaty sausages. More like over inflated hotdogs roasted a little?
Also, how expensive has it gone? Me, the wife and kids loved the whole experiace, but where not imptessed with the price! We are in recession are we not? How can they justify charging £4.50 for a sausage that probably cost about 30p and a roll that was less than 10p? Extortionate I think!! But then again, people are prepared to pay!!

The Market is as wonderful as ever. Unfortunately the owner of a particular counter traditional Swiss was the most abusive bad mannered man I have ever experienced. He shouted so loudly at my 12 year old son it upset him for the evening!! Why would somebody be so rude the first day of the Market and I would not go back to this man or stall he was abusive because my son leant against the side of the stall as others were but this bully obviously would not mention to them as he did us it's mine!!!!!!! What a sad little man with no Christmas spirit at all stat away!!!!

Absolutely superb - was majorly impressed with Manchester and the whole Xmas experience. Very busy at times, but this really only added to the festive spirit.

Great market, the christmas spirit is something not to miss, the only problem is it doesnt have a late trading license so the fun stops early :( try the german sausages, we also tried croma which was an Italian restaurant down a side street from the market which was so tasty.

The Manchester Christmas Markets are great place to go for the day. So many stalls and different things to look at. There's a real buzz about the place and excitement about christmas.
Theres loads of different food stall and even more for drinks. Some of the stalls are great for christmas presents or just little gifts.
Spread across Albert Square and St Annes Square in the middle of Manchester there is something for everyone.

Would recommend everyone to go to Manchester Christmas Market over Christmas, I even bring family and friends from Iceland over every year, and they love it. Very warm and welcoming, lots of different stalls, smells wonderful, tastefully decorated and gets you in the xmas spirit straight away. Love it and can 't wait for them this year.

Unfortunately our lovely day was completely spoilt by one particular jewellery stall that took complete offence when I asked for a discount if a bought over 5 things. Have never come across someone so rude in a long time, suprised to hear that the person in question was actually English! Puts us British to shame when the rest of the market has such a good vibe and banter at the stalls with no attitude problem what so ever. No complete lack of Christmas spirit! Not the first complaint I have heard about the same stall either.

“When The Daddy got dragged to Manchester's Christmas...”

★★★★☆

written by The Daddy on 14/12/2006

When The Daddy got dragged to Manchester's Christmas markets he was intrigued but also somewhat worried. I'm not usually a fan of shopping but Christmas is the one time of year when I can just about stomach it.

The good news for fellow alpha males is that the Christmas Market boasts a fine selection of food stands and beer options. A good feed and a few pints of high percentage grog always puts me in a better frame of mind and at the markets this proved to be a fine tonic.

There is a decent ambiance at the markets, by Manchester's usual standards people were in a decent mood and enjoying the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping. When it comes to the shopping side of things, the market is okay but nothing to write home about. At the St Anne's Square end of the market are all the Austrian and German traders - this is where the decent food and drink is. Here you can find lots of typical German toys - old fashioned stuff like chess sets, swords and parlour games. Although quaint I'm not sure if you'd actually buy any of this stuff for the youth of today.

Move further up and when you get away from the food and The Germans it is a generally a bit of a lottery - indeed half the stores seem to sell the same stuff. It's mainly what I would call trinkets, brick-a-brack and art. There were a few bargain buys, the wife purchased some quirky jewellery and some of the art was well priced - however certain stores were asking quite a lot for what was essentially tat.

You can't miss the market itself, it stretches from St Anne's Square across to the Harvey Nicks store. The market stalls are all in Alpine (wooden huts to you and me) to give it that Scandic Christmas time feel.

Don't get confused with the shabby market up at the Picaddily end - this is a real joke and wouldn't look out of place in Macclesfield (the poxiest market I've ever been too).

All in all a decent trip out and definitely a nice change from the actual shops. Worth the train fare for the beer alone.

The Daddy's Response to The Daddy's Review

Written on: 03/01/2007

I must stand corrected on my own review - I visited Manchester again shortly after writing this review and found that the main German markets are actually in Albert Square outside the town hall. These are even better than the St Anne's Square ones with more stores, a better layout and a more festive feel. Bring em on again for Xmas 07!!!
