i bought this unit from pc world december 2006 and it has been used daily and still going nice.upgraded to vista and 2gb memory.now runs windows 7 very well including aero.the only thing against it is the hard drive only 80gb,way to small but external hard drives are great.screen would have been better it it was a glossy finish.this has been the first laptop that i have bought that has been no problem at all. Bought in Oct 06, so now 3 1/2 years old and used fairly heavily most days in my business. Using it to write this review.
Totally screwed up about two years ago. Tried to install dual boot Linux. Cocked up. All my fault. Got boot/driver cd from Tech Guys. Re-installed XP and Linux Ubuntu again. Never looked back.
Have upgraded to 320 Gig HD and 2 Gig RAM. Using AutoCAD, Photoshop, Office 2007, Linux Ubuntu no probs.
Hardware problems, absolutely none.
Used to to spec and build my own PCs....

The Laptop comes with Media Center pre-installed and all of its drivers, which is very good. Also, the 1 GB of DDR2 memory and dual-core CPU bring a significant overall performance boost. The harddrive is not too bad as it comes with 80 GBs however, it can be dauntingly slow at times.

The day after I wrote my previous message I went to an electrical store called Maplins to try sort of my power cable problem. They sell a universal power cable for £35 which has worked an absolute treat. The power works better than it used to now and I'm glad I went there because the only other option would be to of gone to PC World where they would probably send it off and fleece me out a lot of money. Have had this for under 2 years and have had it sent away about 6 times for several problems such as not turning on, faulty charger etc etc. Now for the past few months its been randomly restarting im guessing this is because there may be a problem with the psu in the laptop itself. Also the screen gets like a quick flash which Im guessing is due loose connections.
Not to mention this is a rather laggy machine and the graphics card is too basic and the closing mechanism is very cheap. This is...

I have had two previous laptops (Sony & Compaq) and I must say the Advent one I have now has pleasantly surprised me in its performance and speed. I use it for work, programmes such as Revit and CAD and social use including gaming and it has always ran efficiently and quickly for everything.
The laptop itself is simply the best around for the price, I have had mine for a year and a half and never experienced problems associated with the actual laptop, however the power cable is a different...

I've owned an Advent 7111 fo nearly 2 years and use it 10 hours a day, every day for heavy business use.
I run MSSQL, a webserver and Photoshop and it handles it all.
It has been the most reilable computer I've used in 20 years.

The Advent 7111 is overall a brilliant pc. Ideal for a first time laptop of any age as its very easy to use, good for younger ages for the first laptop and for the older generation that cant work with complex technology. Brilliant specifications and plays DVD's, Music and nearly all kind of media I have tried. Well recommend this Advent laptop, only bad point for me is the battery life runs out rather quickly when working with playing music or games, but this is expected with most laptops... (read more)

Quite good for gaming and good for programmers, a little heavy
for collage students in my opinion, and the power lead splits after a year of
carrying it round in a laptop bag, apart for this its a very all round
good laptop for the price. Well recommend this Acer 7111 laptop.

Seems pc world knew they were using a faulty batch of motherboards, in my opinion anyway, all advent 7111 sold at Christmas 2006 have been breaking down with the same problem as far as I am aware. Pc world denies all knowledge of this problem though in my opinion, many customers are joining forces to raise a public suit against pc world. Therefore I do not recommend the Advent 7111 (read more)

As of today I had a problem of being unable to reactivate my Advent 7111 after long hibernation. Turned it off by holding down on/off button. On restarts kept asking whether to continue start or delete restore files and restart? Chose continue start option 3 or 4 times to no avail - just continued to show original message again and again. Finally in desperation selected 'delete restore files and restart' which it did. Would not then shut-down. Selected System Restore from 2 days previously... (read more)

I got this laptop as a present. Thought it was really good. Within the first week it crashed so I took it to PC World. They did a "system recovery" it worked again for a week then crashed again. So I took it back and they did another "system recovery". Yay! It worked again. Another week later it crashed. I was angry at this point so I rang the tech guys. Well, I got my Advent 7111 for Christmas 2007. It probably wouldn't have been my first choice for a laptop, but, so far I'm very please with it.
Two draw back's to it 1) Windows XP media. Just 3 days after Christmas it was BSODing about 3 times a day and no restore were included. Apparently you have to call Tech Support and wait 28 days to get them!. So I got rid of XP and installed PC Linux OS. Installed first time and had a full working desktop in 30 min. As yet no crashing!!!

Exactly the same problem happened with my laptop last night, would not switch on, and when it did would cut off again, i to will have to take it back to PC World, only had it since Christmas 2006.

My laptop was away to PC World for 3 weeks and the tracking system lost it and had no idea when it would be returned other than could see it was ready for dispatch. I was on the phone to them when it was delivered by courier. It still has the fault that it will only write to CDs and not DVDs as well. According to the technicians at my local Pc World I can expect to receive a CD to update my software, but they told me that last February. Whenever I enquire in the store they take my phone number and threaten to call me with info; they never do, I feel a letter to the chief executive coming!!

Hi, I received it as a gift at Christmas and I have been back to PC World countless times and all they offer is system recovery. I have been back with friends and family and all they have done is fob me off. Have you had problems with the chipset?

As an IT pro I was reluctant to purchase this brand but I needed a cheap laptop for my eldest son urgently and after deliberating long and hard decided that I couldn't do better for the price.
My suspicions were proved correct quite early on when it started to BSOD regularly. So we rebuilt it "Twice". It subsequently began to die regularly and failed to boot. After some further testing we found a very unstable memory chip.

However, with all the units (I got 3 in the end) purchased, there has been, to date, no problem of any sort. All three of them are now nearly 3 months old.

<br/>I have to say, that I compared the Advent 7111 laptop with the Advent 8109, and I found the 8109 wanting. The specs were very similar, except for the hard drive size and the cache size. The 2Mb cache on this model made all the difference.

<br/>Your bad luck does, at least in this instance, seem to be the exception that proves the rule. I am still very pleased with my purchase, the laptop, and the quality.

I disagree, I have had an advent 7111 for nearly two years now and the only fault I can find is that the speakers are not too good. I have never had a problem with any malfunctions. I got a virus about 2months ago. It was quick and easy to reboot and has been fine ever since. My power cable has broken but a £40 replacement from maplins sorted that. Everything else has been sound. As I say this is not a laptop for the music/ movie lovers as I can get more sound from my n95 mobile phone speakers than this laptop. But through the headphones its great.
<br/><br/>I 110% disagree that you get what you pay for within laptops. The computer world is like any other product world. YOU PAY FOR THE LABLE. No more is this true than with this laptop, a Sony with the same spec will sell for double but perform the same.

It has been almost 2 years since my initial review.
<br/>I stand by my comments about PCW service it has not improved much despite a major overhaul by the "Techguys".

<br/>The 7111 is looking tired, all the keytops are worn away, the microphone never worked and the speakers well...

<br/>I use a skype mouse instead which is fine, I changed the wifi card for an Atheros Tri band, put 3 gb of RAM in it and Vista Ultimate.
<br/>The case still has cracks in all corners and the track pad has worn out to the point that I only have to look at it hard to move the cursor.
<br/>
<br/>But, it has had 2 years of hard graft it's been everywhere and is still working.
<br/>I dare say had this been purchased as a home laptop it would have probably worn better as a daily work tool it doesn't seem to have the durability that I have had with other makes.
<br/>We also have a Thinkpad which is used just as much and it still looks like new as does the macbook.
<br/>
<br/>On the other hand we have Fujitsui Amilio's that will crack a screen if you dare to stare at them too hard!
<br/>They are rubbish compared to the Advent in my opinion.

<br/>So after 2 years, I think that the Advent 7111 has earned it's wings.
<br/>I won't knock it because at the time you couldn't buy anything as powerful for the price.

I would agree on the sound quality - the speakers at the base of the keyboard don't work very well.

I rarely praise a system, believing you can do better, and you probably could with this system, but for under £500, I doubt it. This is a fast loading system, which was easy to use.
Although I am proficient in most things IT already, this system was up and running in under 5 minutes, and connected to the net within 10, using Wifi. The only complaint I had was the pressure PC World put on to buy their insurance, and also to buy Norton Security from them. I am on a LAN, so I didn't need the...

Overall, the Advent 7111 laptop is an excellent package for a sub-£500 notebook (price at PC World). I've been buying Advent for a few years now, and once again I'm impressed. This machine does everything I want, and the wireless connectivity is excellent.

Not Microsoft Word, no. Comes with Wordpad as part of Windows XP, and it is bundled with Microsoft Works software.

I got Works 8.5 with my laptop less than 4 days ago (February 10th).
<br/>There is a PCMCIA slot on my Advent 7111 laptop, to the right of the keyboard. There is also an MS or SD card slot, which I think is FANTASTIC!!

I am so sorry about your problem, and I hope PC World will fix it hassle free, because when my laptop went wrong (Advent 7095), PC World lost it and then found something spilt on it, and they blamed me for the spilling. Then, after it came back to me, it broke with the same problem again. They fixed it faster with less hassle, but then it came back worse than when I sent it in. So I sent it back again, and it came back broken again, so I demanded a replacement. They refused, so I rang up and spoke to a nice man who sorted out the mess, and he gave me a refund. With that I bought an Advent 7113 preloaded with Windows Vista, and it's one of the best laptops I have ever had!
