“Went with this company for my car insurance as their...”

written by Glauxtheowl on 16/10/2023

Went with this company for my car insurance as their quote was the lowest on Compare the Market. Unfortunately after signing up and paying, and with the insurance already in place, they emailed to say there was "something they needed to check" so we had to call them. They then proceeded to tell us that there was an "at fault" claim for one of the named drivers back in 2019, which was a total lie as the driver never made such claim and their current policy clearly shows 5 years no claim, as we had honestly declared in the application. They tried to say this non-existent claim would raise the premium by £65! Naturally I said they can keep their policy and that I wanted to cancel while still within the cooling off period, so I can go with the next cheapest provider on the Compare the Market list which was only £15 more expensive, but hopefully more honest. I was charged a £25 cancellation fee which was ridiculous, but I paid it on principle. Clearly their tactic is to lure you in with the cheapest quote and then make something up to increase the premium once they've got you. I'm surprised by all the positive reviews on other sites, but most are probably fake, or maybe they just choose to rip off the occasional customer. Well they won't have my well earned money, but they can have this 1 star review instead. And there's more coming. So for the £25 they got from me, they'll get a lot of bad publicity. Terrible business sense. They are a total rip-off company and I'll complain to Compare the Market about them. Stay clear!

Had to sell my motorbike due to ill health. Phoned Swinton to cancel my policy to be told I had to pay them £40. Had motor insurance for over 30 years and never have I come across such blatant profiteering in my life. Do not use this company.

“Shambolic Company”

★☆☆☆☆

written by AnsleyDaley on 06/03/2018

A dreadful company to do business with. Each person you to talk to is very pleasant and plausible but unfortunately cannot carry through on promises as the next time you phone it's to another person with a different idea on a solution to the problem. Now on my tenth person, so that's ten different answers but still no resolution. If only I had read the dreadful reviews before I started on this outrageous journey.

I had a car accident last Wed (6th September 2017). It was my fault. I phoned Swinton to report it and ask them what to do. The guy on the phone said I would be phoned back within 4 hours by 1) a garage to arrange delivery or pick up and 2) enterprise cars to arrange a courtesy car. No phone calls. I phoned enterprise...they said Swinton don't know what they're talking about...so I phoned the garage...errm ummm send us some photos they said, we have no courtesy cars here...I tried to phone Swinton back-no answer-kept me waiting 1.5 hours. Roll on till today. No word from garage. Not able to get through to Swinton. No courtesy car. I went to a local garage today who declared my car 'not roadworthy'. Having it sorted tomorrow. Myself. Says it all. Why am I paying £60 a month> Abysmal.

“Absolutely Terrible Service”

written by DoctorJam on 08/08/2017

I am not surprised that there are so many one star ratings for Swinton I would give them no stars if possible. They are fine and efficient in providing a quote just don't have an accident! I had a no claim no blame accident. Suddenly Swinton are no longer my insurers but just my brokers. They take responsibility for nothing and out source all the various issues to different companies who don't speak to each other or Swinton, don't come back to you and don't explain what's happening. My car is written of I get a new one and no surprise don't insure it with Swinton who won't give me evidence of no claims despite the car being written off and in a yard and then the final rip off- they won't refund me for the rest of the year for my written of car because I've insured my new car with someone else. Dreadful Dreadful experience- avoid at all costs.

A middle man in insurance, you pay someone else an extra cut, check a little and you find you get insurance from the same company cheaper online. If you have a problem and complain you will enjoy the response to your complaint...... "Im glad we were able to resolve your complaint. sincerely Swineton" and after using them for 3 different insurances over 8 years when I needed a bit of help..... nothing.

“Cancelled my policy even though paid in full”

★☆☆☆☆

written by drew21 on 27/04/2017

Do not go with this company, I have been with them on and off since the 80's so you think they would know me, then I find they cancel my policy renewal charging me £100.00 because the underwriter could not verify me electronically, they have known me 30 years. Stay away they have not got a clue and have lost a loyal customer and do not care.

“Appalling bad claims department”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Katherineh1994 on 18/02/2017

Do not insure with this company. The firm they use to deal with claims is utterly useless. I was involved in a minor accident which was not my fault. It took over two months to get my car fixed. Swinton wanted a repairer which was a long way from my home to do the job and they wouldn't agree to pick the car up and exchange for a courtesy car where I work. I took numerous phone calls to eventually sort it out. Every time I spoke to a different person who didn't seem to know anything about my case. I had many promises to ring be back but this never happened. I made an official complaint which eventually resulted in a rather lukewarm letter of apology but no explanation of why it had taken so long to deal with my case.

You were lucky.I was referred to an accident management company for a non fault accident. The company has a terrible review history and I had to PAY to retrieve my vehicle from Motofix so that my comprehensive insurer could take it to their repairer and the claim (write off) was settled on the same day. They ignored my instructions from outset and said they DID NOT have any direct involvement in claims! The Financial Ombudsman found against them and I received payment after they had refused to reimburse me. AVOID . They also made numerous errors when setting up my policy with no apologies whatsoever. Avoid Accident Management Companies unless absolutely necessary. If car hire is offered check with your Comprehensive Insurer since you may be liable for costs over an unknown period and if you are guided away from your own insurer and directed by another organization to claim from the Third Party Insurer direct delays incurred may involve costs that could be difficult to recover. In the event of a claim log it with you Insurance Company Direct, and get a claims reference number.

Appalling customer service in Sunderland branch. I made a formal complaint to Swintons' national complaints team who dealt with it in a very prompt and professional manner however feedback was no action would be taken by manager of branch.

I held my insurance for several years with Swinton. I have NEVER failed to get insurance, m.o.t and full services on my car. I have held a clean licence for 48 years. When it was time to renew my insurance with Swinton they told me if I didn't renew with them I could go to prison!! Disgusting treatment to a customer

Just found better insurance for half the price. Turns out they've been ripping me off every year with complicated jargon. They're car recovery policy is awful too - wouldn't come out for a job when I broke down yet AA and RAC did so switched. When leaving swinton they tried to scare monger me into staying and then proceeded to leave me on hold everytime I tried to call for at least 30 mins - never ever go with Swinton - dreadful

“Incompatant company”

written by Peytons340 on 27/06/2016

Through the 2 year policey term I have had with swinton car insurance I have had nothing but problems from day one. Direct debits coming out when requested not to as not had the money in my account and told them I would pay over the phone, late payment fees add due to this and cancelled and not to top it off a payment leaving my account after I instructed them that I would not be renewing my policy with them, as found cheaper insurance else where, which they replied " no problem sir we will let the policey lapse when due" now they tell me nothing is in the notes to confirm this so now I have to wait until Monday 27/06/16 for them to here the conversation so they can cancel the policy and get my deposit back. Totally incompitant staff that dont put notes on your file, customer service is dispicable and will NEVER use swinton again even if they were the last insurance company on this earth. Mr P Dickson.

“Never go with Swinton they leave an 80yr old man...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by jjKeith454 on 10/06/2016

The experience my elderly parents had when their car broke down last week has left me astounded and disgusted at the treatment they received. My parents were travelling back to UK in their camper van when it broke down in Normandy. They tried ringing the international phone number provided by Swinton Breakdown cover but it did not answer. They phoned me so that I could contact Swinton for them. This was at 1100. I was able to get Swinton to recover the vehicle with my parents to a local VW garage. That was at 1350. At 1500 they had received no communication from Sinton. I contacted swinton again and they agreed that they would contact my parents direct to arrange for their travel to the UK as the vehicle was not able to be repaired that day. At 1620 my parents phoned me again and said as they had not heard from Swinton they had arranged for the garage owner to take them to local town and a hotel and they had booked a train to Calaise. I again telephoned Swinton to tell them the latest developments and was informed that my parents could not claim for any travel plans they made themselves and swinton would have to make all the required arrangements under the insurance conditions. SHE ASSURED ME THAT SHE WOULD ARRANGE ALL TRAVEL FOR THE HOMEBOUND JOURNEY. At 1900hrs their time my parents who are 80 and 70 are standing outside a closed garage in an industrial site outside a small France town in the pouring rain waiting for a taxi to pick them up as promised by Swinton. I rang Swinton several times and was told on two separate occasions that the taxi was on its way to be told twice that it had gone to the wrong location. At 2200 my elderly parents phone died and they were left without communication in a dangerous location with no other option than to walk towards the town - 4 miles away! At 2230 GMT I was informed that the taxi driver was at the right location but could not see my parents. I instructed Swinton to contact the local police and report them as missing persons and to phone me back within 30 minutes with an update. I received no further communication from either my parents or Swinton that day. The next morningeneration I contacted Swinton again to be told they had no further information and they were Tring to locate my parents. At 1000 we were told that my parents were picked up by the local guandarmes the previous night and given a hotel room. They were informed that they were on the train to Calaise. We were then promised that they would be met in Calaise or Dover and driven home. Later that day this too changed as Swinton said they could not provide a driver to take them home but would instead arrange hotel accommodation and train travel the next day. APPARENTLY THIS TOO CHANGED. SWINTON INFORMED MY PARENTS THAT IF THEY ARRANGED HOTEL ACCOMMODATION AND PAID FOR THEIR TRAIN TRAVEL HOME THEY COULD CLAIM IT BACK. SWINTON ALSO PROMISED THAT THEIR CAMPER VAN WOULD BE TRANSPORTED BACK HOME AGREED FOR MONDAY 06 JUNE. AND GUESS WHAT THAT TOO WAS A CLAIM THAT DID NOT MATERIALISE. AFTER YET ANOTHER SERIES OF COMMUNICATION THEY HAVE NOW SAID THE RECOVERY TRANSPORTER IS IN CALAISE BUT NOT YET WITH THE CAMPER VAN ON IT. I was promised a telephone call from the complaints department as I have requested all transcripts of telephone communications and as yet again I still have not received any contact from Swinton regarding my complaint.

How stressful for you and your parents .. I too have just had my own nightmare week with Swinton Breakdown cover .. Talking to Axa Assurance Helpline who at times were not very helpful .. All you need is help in these situations .. Not broken promises ..Broken down campervan in Normandy the same .. £1500 quid or so later of our own money .. Got back home to the UK .. Still with a not repaired van .. Paid for Breakdown cover .And Recovery Back to the Uk .. So you dont expect to be paying out for it out your own pocket ..
Hope your parents are both Ok .. I will post my own story on this website ... Ex Swinton Customer ..

written by Newthatch on 16/05/2016

1. As a broker I expect them to offer me the best price immediately, but in Swinton's case this only happens after you have turned their offer down - from £350 to £230. 2. I was asked to provide evidence of no claim discount. I was in Australia so did not respond to 4 letters and 2 phone calls. Swinton do not use e-mail (which I would have picked up) as it is "not a secure form of communication". 3. I returned to find my policy cancelled and drove for 3 days uninsured before opening the relevant letter. A cancellation fee was charged - since refunded as a gesture of goodwill. 4. The Driver's Legal Protection fee is non-refundable. I cannot find this in the policy and I don't think Swinton can either, since their letter states " was outlined that this policy was non-refundable after the first 14 days".

“Hopeless and harassing”

★☆☆☆☆

written by DocDaz on 19/04/2016

Following an accident when my car was written off, Swinton totally mismanaged the claim and failed to provide any of the services outlined in the policy such as a hire car, and nor did they give me my excess back. As if this was not bad enough, when the insurance was due for renewal Swinton called me 3 times to ask if I wanted to renew the insurance policy. Each time I told them, no, because the car was written off. Despite this they renewed the policy on a car which I no longer owned and which was no longer fit to drive. I called them again to cancel but still they did not. Now they keep sending me letters to demand payment for a policy I did not want or need. They are predatory bullies who are hopelessly disorganised and don't take no for an answer. Don't take out insurance with Swinton, the policies are not worth the paper they are written on.

“Breakdown Cover”

★★★★★

written by zolmandy on 17/02/2016

Malfunction light was showing along with TRC and VSC light. Called Swinton Breakdown around 10.00am on a Monday morning - within 15 minutes the breakdown man phoned saying he was on his way - within 25 minutes he was on the doorstep, plugged the car into a computer analyser - advised he couldn't fix it at the house and the car would need to go to a garage. I said okay I'll get my coat but I didn't even need to do anything as he took the car to a local garage who later phoned me to give me costings and I picked the car up at 4.30pm that day - perfect service from everybody.

When it comes to making amendments or cancelling they are very unhelpful, money grabbing. Chomping food over the phone while talking to you and putting you on hold for 5 mins. Now have to chase up a refund for a cancelled policy! Will never use them again.
