I have had my car insured with Direct Line for 11 years, no problems. Received renewal quote which had increased greatly to £571. Rang them and asked if they'd made a mistake as haven't claimed, they then quoted £130 cheaper! Used a comparison website and saved myself £320! “Never again”

Wife involved in a collision hit from behind. DL stated it was her fault and paid others out. Other insurance company conducted investigation and the vehicle that hit her from behind admitted causing accident and full liability. Complaints made regarding how this was dealt with currently with ombudsman. Legal rep recovering our losses has made SIX calls requesting confirmation of excess, ombudsman told DL to confirm TWICE they still refuse to. “Direct Line Cannot Be Trusted”

I have never felt the need to write a formal bad review online until now. I can't believe such a company is allowed to operate the way they have. Some practical warnings... Firstly, if you do an online quote, don't expect the amount to stay the same. That happened to us. Get them to repeat the whole policy details, including name of driver and details etc. This is where we faulted. I am actually quite happy with DL. They have worked with me when I negotiate with them. I started with them and am still with them 8 years later. I had one car accident, they handled it like a dream. “They don't care about loyal customers ”

We have been with Direct Liine for over 20years . Our own stupidity led us to believe the cared about their customers . Very simple comparison search took premium from £718.22 to £300 . Despite not renewing with DL they want £47 to cancel & will not release our No Claims evidence until we do . They simply do not care , there are many other companies , choose someone else . “Don't Trust Direct Line”

Direct Line just wrote to me advising they are cancelling my policy, without reason or what happens to refund - I have to use their premium numbers to phone again. I had just renewed and paid in full. 2 months ago I was hit by a car and witnesses provided evidence that I was not at fault - they failed to chase up the other party or witnesses until it pushed them due to the fact they wanted me to pay the excess after repairs. “Price hike no reason after 4 years!”

My car has been insured with direct line for the past 4 years. I got my renewal letter today and the price has gone up by nearly £100! I called and asked them if it was a mistake as I haven't had any accidents and nothing has changed apart from having an extra years no claim bonus. I had the same with House Insurance. Existing customers must be on a 'suckers' list of those who renew automatically. To me they are fundamentally dishonest in the way they treat customers.

“Unexplained hike in premium”

My mother in law has just had a renewal notice from Direct Line. She paid £340 last year and her renewal was for over £900. Interestingly, she had a claim in the year, but had sent all details arguing (and supplying photos) the other driver was at fault. Because the other driver was also with DL, they decided to go 50/50 (without telling her this or allowing her to challenge this). “Disgraceful attitude”

I was involved in an accident where a driver came around a blind bend downhill on a damp road overtaking parked cars which caused him to come over onto my side of the road. Experience of who's been driving the longest doesn't come into consideration when a accident happens in a matter of seconds. You putting this to contest your innocence is a prime example you don't know what you are commenting about. I'm unable to discuss any further about the accident without looking at the true facts. Hope you don't expect free insurance because you've been driving for over 25 years.

Double the price of the same insurance from elsewhere so we cancelled our policy. Despite this they subsequently took our premium. “No common sense”

Firstly equivalent cover will cost you half the money with a basic web search. The staff are rounded up from local community centres, rehabilitation projects and approved schools and basically cant spell their name let alone deal with a customer enquiry. “Satisfied customer”

Direct line took my collision details over the phone. Communicated well and arranged for car to be picked up. My policy has guaranteed car hire so I had one for two weeks. The garage took a little longer to complete so I had to hire a car for a further 3 days. The £70 money back paid for the extra car hire. A really excellent service from direct line car insurance, it doesn't pay long term to skimp on insurance. We have our pet insurance with them.
