Twinings Lapsang Souchong is a tea with a difference. It is smoked! The tea comes from South East China, the special flavour and aroma are produced by laying out the tea leaves on trays made from bamboo, allowing smoke from pinewood to flow up through.
When brewed for between 3-5 minutes you will have a golden tea with a very distinct smoky flavour, the aroma is also unusual, not quite as pleasant an aroma as some speciality teas, nonetheless, it is still unusually smoky and woody due to the smoking treatment it has been given. The China tea flavour can still be tasted through the smoky background, to some this may taste a little bitter.
It is suggested this tea is drank in the afternoon or evening, after dinner. Drink it black or with milk, though if trying this for the first time I would suggest a little milk and sweeten it a bit to detract a little from the slight bitter edge.
Bit of an acquired taste. If you like it, enjoy!
