Good Points: A well rounded film that doesn't go for stupid jokes
Bad Points: Perhaps a few more jokes.
General comments: Has anyone else got bored of Will Ferrell? Like Adam Sandler before him, Ferrell seems to have lost the ability to read a script or maybe he's just incapable of saying no. However in this film he manages to produce a true film. Not just a man shouting obscenities.
The film follows Harold Crick (Farrell), a man whose life is so routine he even counts toothbrush strokes. However one day his watch does something it has never done before. From that day on Harold's life changes.
Acting
Ferrell is good. Not great. But good. At times he seems surprised that he's not a) shouting b) swearing c) saying stupid things d) saying completely inappropriate things that imply he may have aspergers syndrome. In fact Ferrell is playing a relative normal character who has just fallen into a routine that has allowed him to live a life that, though exceedingly boring, allows him to survive if not truly live. Which by the way generally wraps up the whole film. Farrell plays an endearing Crick. Who you almost want to hug but not quite.
Maggie Gyllenhaal/Ana Pascal - Gyllenhaal is good as Ferrell's love interest. She doesn't out play him and is brilliant at being slightly quirky and the complete opposite of Crick.
Emma Thompson/Karen Effiel - Emma Thompson is brilliant. I probably think that because she's English but who cares. Who plays dour, depressed artists better than the English. In fact the scenes with Emma in were the ones I enjoyed the most. Boy did she have some brilliant lines. I especially liked the bit when she asked the hospital worker where the dying patients were. The problem she explained was that these people were going to make it.
Dustin Hoffman/Jules Hilbert - My second favorite scenes were when Hilbert was in them. Hoffman played them well but really it was note of note.
The direction never made me sit up and take interest but he clearly had an eye for amusing scenes. He played the scenes when Hilbert was life-guarding well. He made us realize that Crick was, shall we say, a little different from the rest of us. He also had Effiel's house decorated in a brilliantly minimalist style.
Overall the film was totally engrossing and written in a way that instead of me think I hope they kill Crick. I was hoping he would survive but thinking he probably wouldn't. I wont say what happens. In fact though above I say it could use more jokes it didn't need them, to be entertaining. I gave this film 8. I was inclined to give it more but couldn't truly rate it with the big guns likes of dodge ball. However in truth this film is a totally different beast.

I won't go over the film here that was done, I'll just say that I went into this expecting a comedy and got an original, well-rounded film. I highly recommend it.

Stranger Than Fiction is a really refreshing film. It's based upon a man named Harold (Ferrell) who is a taxman with a very routine life, to even counting how many brush strokes he takes when brushing his teeth! Until the day he starts hearing a woman's voice in his head, narrating his every move. With the help of a literary scholar, he tracks down the narrator who is amazed to find she is writing an account of his life and that her main character actually exists.
This is a great story and Ferr ...
