“Computer says no!!!!”

Written on: 15/06/2014 by AllieRiley (1 review written)

We'd been mortgage customers of YBS for 7 years and regular savers in a mortgage offset account with a decent balance. We were looking to move house with a 15% deposit and needed to borrow £150k. With a household income of £90k and a perfect payment history with YBS I wasn't expecting any problems. How wrong could I be! Had an initial appointment with a girl who looked no more than 25 dressed in baggy pants and flip flops, didn't get great vibes from the start. I immediately hit a brick… Read Full Review

“Shambolic”

Written on: 14/03/2014 by Sophie313 (1 review written)

I've never written a review before but feel I should warn people about this shambolic organisation. Absolute horrendous. We're an existing customer looking to downsize (half our current mortgage). We have never missed a payment and downsizing puts us at 60% LTV. We stayed with YBS to reduce the redemption penalty. BIG MISTAKE! They were great last time (2009). We've had a long forensic interactive assessment of our finances. This would be fine as we've nothing to hide. The process has been as… Read Full Review

Oh you are soooooo right. The Yorkshire Building Society is a shambles. The worst customer service I have EVER had! They are just a shambolic outfit. Very polite team members but completely ineffectual! Do you think they are bankrupt and can't loan anymore? Is that why they took six weeks to not give me an answer on my application (like the former reviewer to REDUCE my loan size and %). Ugh! Just unbelievable amounts of smokescreens and delays requesting the same information in different formats then saying that they couldn't work on the formats they had sent me/the bank/the accountant etc. Horrendous! Stay away from Yorkshire Building Society if you want efficient, caring and timely customer service.

“Yorkshire Building Society couldn't cut the mustard”

Written on: 02/03/2014 by Mariela1967 (1 review written)

Painful experience I've had with Yorkshire Building Society. I have an excellent credit reference and applied for a mortgage. Terrible customer service -- staff on telephone support NEVER phone you back when they say they will etc. Even when I went in desperation in person to the Complaints Department in Bradford, the lady responsible for complaints gave me the runaround and dismissed what I'd suffered. I ended up losing the house I wanted to buy. I've read so many similar comments about… Read Full Review

“Awful service!!”

Written on: 20/02/2014

Avoid. The initial application process is smooth but the main application drags on for months. They never call when they say they will, you cannot reach the case manager, they drag their feet at all times. A simply awful customer service too with staff tutting down the phone and being very unhelpful. As a first time buyer I wish I had gone with someone else and now face losing the home we have waited so long for. Well done YBS, you are awful!… Read Full Review

“Fast and fantastic service”

Written on: 16/12/2013 by Gopi919 (1 review written)

Before visiting YBS I went read the reviews online and nothing was in favour of YBS. However I tried and visited Leicester office. The service offered by Leicester office is excellent, my application for the mortgage was approved in principle at very first meeting and there after within 2 weeks I got the final mortgage offer. That was quick compared to post office, HSBC, first direct etc. The rate of interest is also very low for 15-20% down payment. Overall I am happy and I have no… Read Full Review

“Hopeless mortgage lending criteria”

Written on: 04/11/2013 by 2468numerate (1 review written)

Yorkshire Building Society decided not to proceed with my online mortgage application for the single reason that I had been working in the USA for the last 4 years. I am a UK born, UK educated, UK citizen, with an immaculate credit history and income in the top 1-2% of the country. I had a deposit of almost 50%, so credit was hardly an issue. Despite this I was told they would not move on their criteria, ever. I asked whether they would still stick that criteria if I had a 95% deposit - they… Read Full Review

“Dreadful”

Written on: 04/10/2013

Application for agreement in principle was smooth and service was friendly. But when I got through to the formal application it turned into a nightmare. YBS are unbelieveably bureaucratic and at times laughably ridiculous in terms of the documentation they required, rejecting certified documents because the solicitor's stamp didn't have a phone number on it, and demanding that pdf documents be certified, which meant printing 2 copies and asking someone to confirm that one printout was the same… Read Full Review

“Same as others”

Written on: 19/09/2013 by nerdynerd (1 review written)

It seems that I am not the only one with a problem with their application process. As a previous poster here noted I am a Director of a company with 5 years worth of accounts and have everything in order but having to send them everything with copies signed by my accountants, this still wasn't good enough for them. They just come back and state why things aren't done in a very specific way so I had to call up my accountants in no less than 3 separate occasions to get the accounts signed in… Read Full Review

I had similar terrible experience with ybs. The company should be investigated for extremely irresponsible and cheating behaviour. They have some bad motives as far as I can see. We should do something about the company.

Agreed, I have submitted a complaint via the online section.

No response as yet but I am next going to go to the ombudsman about this. I suggest we all do the same as they can't be made to get away with this.

Give me a call if you can as they say much quicker...

“Took a month to end up with declined application”

Written on: 11/03/2013

Very poor service. The case manager didn't look at document properly at all and rejected without even looking at them the first time. I appreciate I'm not a standard case as I'm a director of my own limited company, and therefore I pay myself what I need or feel like. In their view I was therefore high risk as dividends was becoming less over the years, even though the reason was my wife was now receiving some of my dividends. The checkbox fixated people at YBS couldn't get that into their… Read Full Review

“declined solely because married to non-uk national!”

Written on: 24/11/2012 by User_lwjghg (1 review written)

Dreadful service. Despite perfect credit record, declined on a 70% LTV mortgage. The reason for this is because I am married to a Chinese wife --- the fact she has a perfect credit record and is a landlord over a UK property, and has no share legal or indeed equitable in my property was irrelevant. To round things off I have been told an adverse judgment might be put on my credit file, which may result in me being unable to apply for future mortgages from other banks etc. So, if you are married… Read Full Review

“Shockingly bad...”

Written on: 12/08/2012 by PAB333 (1 review written)

My partner is on a temporary contract, so we were torn between applying for a joint application mortgage with Yorkshire BS (great rates) and a single salary mortgage in my name with Halifax (higher income multiples). I spoke to an advisor from Yorkshire BS and they were very reassuring and gave the impression that the temporary contract should not be a problem. I've just had a similar issue but not paid a fee. They rejected our application because my wife's initial wasn't on a bill asked us to get it put on and still rejected it. Problem is we've wasted over a week with them endangering our house purchase. They like sucking people in with low rates and then finding a reason not to proceed with the application. I'll probably contact the financial ombudsman as they shouldn't be getting away with it.

“YBS Mortgages - great rate, terrible service!”

Written on: 19/01/2012

Found the property we wanted to buy in November 2011 and had our first appointment with a YBS adviser on 25th November - due to the length of the process, inefficiency and miscommunication by their staff we are nearly two months on and still don't have a confirmed mortgage offer and valuation. Our buyers are getting twitchy (and have now had to move into rented accommodation while they wait for us to complete our purchase!), and our vendor wants to start offering viewings to other potential… Read Full Review

They deliberately put low rate to get customers interested in their product. They are stealing valuable information from customers then maybe later for their own benefits. They never intend to lend you money in the first place but they cheated you in order to get what they need from you, customers. The company should be investigated.

“Shocking Mortgage Process ”

Written on: 21/11/2011

The customer service is terrible. You are never kept in the loop as to what is happening. You call for an update at which point they tell you that you will hear something tomorrow...you don't! The next phone call is then littered with excuses. In brief, applied for a mortgate on 1 October 2011 - hoping to move in before christmas. Valuation was undertaken end of October, as of today 21 November 2011 I still don't have a confirmed mortgage offer! Having spent over a thousand pounds in searches… Read Full Review

“YBS, fixed rate offset mortgage-Frustrating mortgage...”

I have recently submitted a mortgage application as we are moving home. As an existing YBS mortgage account holder who was happy, I just reapplied to them. The process, so far, has been a nightmare! I am having the same issue. I have applied and was told over the phone everything was OK and the signed off agreement paperwork will be posted out ASAP. Two weeks later still nothing. I called them three times and my wife called once. First time I was told we didn't supply original payslips so its holding up the process. We did send originals! This has been cleared up so I have been told. As for the other times I called, all I am told is everything is OK, someone will call you to let you know the paperwork has been posted in the next day or so. Never do. I am going to give them three more business days and if I still get nothing, I am going to put in an official complaint. Thirteen business days to issue paperwork is just unacceptable. This is holding up my move process and adding to the stress levels.

Very disappointed with Yorkshire and just changed to HSBC. Wne rates drop they do not adjust their trackers to the absolute latest contractual time (up to two months after BOE change). When they were going up it happened virtually the same day. I took out a re-mortgage with the Yorkshire Building Society. I did a 10 year fixed rate mortgage.
This being the 4th mortgage company I have been with, and they are by far the best one I have used, proving that they are not all much of a much-ness!

They helped me weigh up the best options available for us, and the deal that was on offer really was great!

They are not here to help the honest home buyer. I wanted to buy a retirement property to live in on the coast. I already own my home. I have recently moved in with my partner who owns her own home outright. Because I retire soon I wished to buy myself a retirement home by the coast and the mortgage would be repaid from the sale of my home upon retirement. I have been told by them that I was trying to get a buy to let property through the backdoor. What absolute rubbish. They declined to assist even though I met every other criteria. Madness.
