Penhalwyn is AMAZING! After a few years of not riding due to illness, I recently spent 7 months at another nearby riding school and decided to move as I wasn't progressing and it was a lot more expensive. I went to Penhalwyn just to ride a friends pony and fell in love with the place. Less than a week later I was having my first lesson there. All instructors are friendly and very helpful and in just a few months I have greatly improved. All the horses are beautiful and are properly cared for... (read more)

Penhawlyn is the best riding school I have ever attended, and I should know- I stayed there from 9.30-4.00 every Saturday from when I was eight years old,for about 2 and a half to 3 years. I'm attending this ridding school still, even though I have four horses of my own- that's how much I love this place. You will see reviews on this site that say the horses are badly kept, not looked after properly, but they are. They are kept in brilliant condition, and are not treated unfairly or cruelly by... I have been visiting Penhalwyn once a year for the past five years or so, I was more impressed as a young child but now I realise the downsides of this so called riding school. I would definitely agree with a previous review that the horses appear poorly kept as they are far too often made to go out on the road for tourists and over the years I've seen many issues with grumpy and inattentive volunteers/staff, disobedient horses, people falling off or otherwise having bad experiences. The... (read more)

Pretty much all of the horses don't have shoes and are made to do regular road work .. They are untrained and even the best of horses have been rearing for over 6 years and chucking people off , which is not acceptable at a riding school A lot of the staff are pleasant but there are to many children thinking they run the yard , you can clearly tell that half of the reviews are children from the riding stables. I would not recommend coming here to learn to ride as you will be kept at the same... (read more)

For the last two years our children have been riding here when we go on our summer holiday to St Ives. Our youngest (just 6) was well looked after on the many times she has been, as have our older children. Yes the stables and buildings are old and weathered but the animals are well looked after, and cared about. We will be returning next year with our 5 children! (read more)

Used to showjump at BSJA grade C, but hadn't been on a horse for many years due to getting smashed up in a bad accident not of my making some years ago so I was nervous, I needn't have worried, I was given a very suitable animal to ride. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and owners, lovely people and friendly well trained ponies and horses to ride. I was instantly at home in the saddle and the trek I went out on was superb, everything I knew and loved about horses came flooding... (read more)

Penhaulwyn is sooooooooooo lovly I ride there and keep my pony cloud there. This is how great penhaulwyn is, before I got my pony he didn't live in penhaulwyn and used to get bad laminitis and other inguries. But since I've had him and kept him at penhaulwyn there's been nothing wrong with him! And that's a good 3 years. Sadly I m to big for my poney and love riding penhaulwyns horse (read more)

the owners of Penhalwyn are lovely and are more than happy to help anyone. however some of the staff can be bitchy. Trencrom the weight bearing horse is huge and very tempermental he is very traffic shy and therefore not the best to be given to novice riders. all animals can change their mood and this is something people should know before horse riding. yes he needs to be trained to get this out of him but no matter what horses can change. i think people should be properly briefed before... Im 15 years of age and I've been riding on and off at Penhalwyn since I was 7. I thank all the staff at Penhalwyn for teaching me how too ride, and I improved every lesson. Every time I've been to the yard I've had a good day, it's nice too spend time with the horses, and have a laugh with the people up there. I would recommend this yard too anyone who wants too learn how to ride, or learn too improve their riding. The horses get looked after nicely, they get groomed and pampered by... (read more)

I agree somewhat with the last review; the place is scruffy and everything looks old and worn out. But you give things the benefit of the doubt. My suspicions were raised when I got on the horse, a big young cob, and it didn't respond to any aids... at all - and i was told it was scared of traffic! To set off you have to cross the St Ives to Penzance main road! The briefing was laughable. Yes, the horse was scared of traffic and as a beginner I didn't really know what to do. I spent an hour... the comments on this review were clearly wrote by staff or helpers and therfore proves the point that the staff and children are rude. and also if it wernt for tourists then there wouldnt be a business so rethink what you are saying!! I myself have lived down in cornwall almost 16 years and go stives area often so im not a tourist and in some sence what people are sayin is true and your silly comments just prove it. Janey and Vaugne are lovely and so are the adult staff that work there but the teenagers who think they know it all just ruin the place.

I started riding over 20 years ago at Penhalwyn. I have since moved away but I will always remember the weekends spent working and riding there, we used to gain points for cleaning tack, filling hay nets, mucking out and once we had enough we could exchnage them for a lesson or hack, which if I remember correctly was through beautiful countryside. I disapprove of your comment I have been riding at old mill for 3 years. I am in no way rich or experienced but am treated extremely well and offered all types of advice. My instructor even took time out to help me choose my horse. She even took us out on a hack with her own horse to make sure that he was a safe ride. I'm not convinced that the instructors at Penhalwyn would take time out to do this. Sorry if I am in any way wrong.

I have been riding at old mill for 3 years and I am in no way rich. The horses and pony's that they have suit every rider imaginable. My instructor took her time to help me choose my horse. She even came out on hacks with me to make sure he was safe (all this unpaid). Old Mill is more popular because they look after every person that learns with them. I rode previously at Penhalwyn and enjoyed it but I feel I get more attention at Old Mill.

Trecrom did have a slight problem with very BIG traffic a year ago or so, but this summer has been out everyday, often more than once and had improved greatly, and barely blinks an eyelid at the hugest of vehicles now.
