We have travelled with Intrepid many times, and yes we have noticed that there is an increasing trend that the leader tend to favour selected local business and charity groups instead of spreading the wealth around the local community. They also a high expectation of the passengers to trip any one services they use on the trip, however we have always found there trips to be affordable, hassle free, and enjoyable trips.

I've been on 7 Intrepid trips before, and obviously some trips are better than others, but the reason I keep using them is because the maximum number of passengers is 12 but I've been on a trips to China, where there were only 5 of us. Smaller trips are much more personalized, while large groups can feel like being on a conveyor belt.

I also like them because they use as wide a range of public transport as possible, so a typical trip would include buses, trains, rickshaws, some form of sea or ...

I had reservations booking a trip with a company that I had never used before, but for budgetary reasons and itinerary I chose Intrepid. I was really impressed with everything, and we had a fantastic leader, Raj. Yes, some of the accommodation is basic, but it's all part of the "India Experience". We travelled on local transport, and everything went really smoothly - I would not have been able to cover that distance by myself.

Most of the people on the trip had travelled with Intrepid before ...

We recently did an Intrepid Comfort Trip through India. It was really well organised and we had an amazing time. Many thanks our local guide, Mayur. I still have reservations about travelling with a group but if you want an easy introduction to a foreign place that gives you a real experience I'd definitely recommend Intrepid. Everything ran really smoothly and seemed flexible enough to accommodate most peoples needs, ie: balance of free time and included activities. They provided good, clean a ...

I have traveled with Intrepid about 3 times and about to go on my 4th trip in a weeks time. I have never had any major problem with them, this is not to say that things dont go wrong and sometimes hotels can be very basic. This is why I continue to travel with intrepid as its all part of the adventure :) For those who want a relaxing hassle free holiday I suggest they go to the beach in Tahiti. For those who want and experiance of a life time and have an open mind to any thing that could go wron ...

I have always had a fantastic time travelling with Intrepid, so am suprised to see the number of negative reviews posted here. I always check the individual trip reviews on their site before booking as they publish all passenger reviews they get - the good and bad ones for every trip. You then get a broader range for the trip you want.

    An Intrepid tour indeed
My time in Morocco has been an extremely emotionally and physically draining one, it may have something to do with the company and something to do with the country. The rest is here http://le-mattcq.livejournal.com/30363.html

Once upon a time, intrepid used to be a good outfit.

However, things have gone dramatically downhill. I can not recommend this group to anyone: their negligance can and have put my safety and health at risk in countries where very scarey things can happen.

Think twice. Due your homework. And - if possible, try to go with an outfitter who will ensure your safety as well as provide a gateway to an exotic experience.

We did an 8 day Intrepid Egypt package in August 09. It was a very mixed experience. It started off badly as Intrepid Travel had forgotten to let our guides know we were coming and so they were quite surprised when we turned up. The accommodation in Cairo was woeful... we ended up cutting our losses and just booking and paying to stay somewhere else with no refund on the room. On the plus side the Nile cruise and guides were very good and helpful. Overall I was quite unimpressed with Intrepid th ...

I am a middle age man and traveled with Intrepid last September. Starting out with one group on the Galapagos Islands, finishing in Quito Equador, then met up with another group and traveled through Equador, through Peru and Inca trail, and ended up in La Paz Bolivia.
Everything went very smooth and well organized the guides was great, accomodation much better than expected. Certanly would never have done this on my own.
I booked with Trailfinders and they was excelant and booked flights, but wis ...

I went to Peru with Intrepid and loved it. I had a great group (12 of us) which was a perfect size. Lovely local leaders.

We went on Intrepid's Egypt Adventure, and I must say it was as bad as it could be.
The starting point hotel, The Indiana in Cairo is the worst hotel I have stayed in in 15 years of travel. Dirty rooms bathroom awash with water and horrific looking mould in the shower and vanity. You take your chances with who you get on the tour and you have no idea until it starts.

I did 'Turkish Delights'and loved the trip. The Turkish tourguide had a great knowledge of the country, history, and customs.

We went with Intrepid travel to Vietnam, Cambodia, and Bangkok on October 2008. We had a great trip and the guides we had were very well organized and KNEW what they were doing. They tried to give us taste of both countries and I have to say we had a ball. The guides in both countries did try to make it interesting and were informative, without them we wouldn't have seen as much.

Overall my experience of Intrepid travel has been appalling. Safety is something they pay scant regards to - our guide actually told us that safety was down to us and not Intrepid. On two occasions I had to travel by boat without a lifejacket - shorts trips one may have been but it still required a lifejacket. On another occasion my girlfriend and I were forced to scramble up a rocky wet hill/mountain side in flipflops with not guidance as to which route to take - this because the guide got ...

Some specific things, our tour leader started the orientations too late sometimes at 10am or 11am and when you have one day in a city who wants to waste time. When it came to pay the group restaurant bills they did 'split the bill' which was unfair to those of us on the tour who were on a budget and it discouraged some of us from eating with the group which was a shame. Tour leader didn't always know her way around and got lost a few times and wasted time, for instance she took us to the wron ...

You might get a good tour leader like ours in Cambodia - who was excellent in every respect and made it a great trip.

The itineraries are vague and more seems to be left to the discretion of the tour leader than with other similar tour operators eg GAP - so if the guide is not really interested and/or is only interested in some of the guests, they can pretty much ignore everyone else's wishes/expectations.I've never had that experience with any other company - but it has now happened on 2 out o ...

"Knowledgeable local guide" had never been to North Island before. Very much got the impression from bus drivers etc that the regular guide (who was unavailable) would hugely have improved the trip - for example one of the bus drivers pointed out the pie shop that the trip would normally stop at, otherwise we would have been left with no lunch. Guide was more used to guiding in South-East Asia, and the whole group found his "fly by the seat of our pants" attitude irritating, as it wasn't reall ...

I would recommend that you avoid purchasing a trip until the last minute. The moment you purchase a trip there is ABSOLUTELY NO alteration permitted, and no cancellation. Disappointing.

Intrepid sells its brand of travel as being for independent people who want to go an on adventure but my experience was nothing like that. The accommodation was incredibly expensive despite the fact that the advertising material said it was designed to be low budget/backpacker style accommodation. The hotels we were staying at were listed in lonely planet at US$45 a night! I believe the guide had never been on the trip before, in fact I don't think she'd never even been to Cambodia before! ...
