GAMO VIPER EXPRESS. Stay well away!!!!

I have had the misfortune to own this for 2 years now. I think the other reviewers must have worked for Gamo at the time. This is the most disapointing pile of rubbish that I have ever had the pleasure of handling. It is badly engineered, the attention to quality control, sucks, and as for accuracy if you hit what you are aiming at you will be lucky, providing it is as big as a barn door!

I currently have my third version.

The first arrived and on... (read more)

Viper express is great all around small game gun. The shells it comes with are great for small pest birds. With the .22 adapter for pellets pack's a serious punch to small game even turkeys is you can get a good shot. This gun is by far the best investment I've made into a pellet gun. (read more)

Don't let the cheap looks mislead you: this is a superb airgun.
After very frustrating expeariences (*) with the far more expensive DIANA 300 R, the Viper Express is a real blessing.
You shouldn't expect too much (power) using the shell -option, wich is only accurate upon 10 meters, but using the .22 adaptor tells a different story: no problem to hit small targets at 25 meters (and at the same range with the right kind of pellets easily penetrating both front- and rear side of a metal... I purchased this gun 2 months ago. The shotgun is deadly at up to 25 yards even on larger game like rabbits. The .22 pellets easily penetrated a galvinized steel tub at 75 ft shooting diagionally at it. With a red dot sight its long range accuracy is greatly improved. Great quality gun and good versality. Well recommend Gamo Gamo Viper Express. (read more)

Its a cool gun great idea and all but the #9 shells are horrible. I water foul hunted and still do for more then 30 years i guess after shooting 12 ga._To 4/10 shot makes it seem weaker but there really not strong at all the pellet may penetrate but there is no front sight to aim with. I got this gun for the back yard for small game it still does the job. But i wouldnt buy it for the shotgun. (read more)

If you read the description of the gun it has no black powder therefore you cannot compare it to a real shotgun. medium to short range, 10-30 yards max. read the description before you purchase the gun.

The XS 36-2 is a rifle from the SMK range, in saying that, it is by far one of their best rifle's so far. I know I've tried almost every one. My last being the XS 78 DELUX C02. Now I'm using the XS 36. It's a heavy rifle and not for the faint hearted. In saying that, I'm six feet one and built like an out door toilet so the rilfe is not beyond my handling. I had been shooting on 10 ft/lb for about a year, so when I bought this rifle it performed well above what I had been using. Smk say that... (read more)

I ordered the .22 viper express from cheaper than dirt for $200 and it arrived in about 6 days. Right when i got it i tested the shotshells and at 10 yards the groups were about 8 inches with 20 #9 shot and could penetrate 4 to 5 layers of cardboard. I also tested the gun with pellets and it grouped about 1 inch at 20 yards and could penetrate 3/4 inch particle board with flathead pellets, i am sure if you used pointed pellets the penetration would be even better. The next day i took the gun... (read more)

I bought my Gamo Gamo Viper Express from Airgunsexpress for $229.99, which i thought was a good deal. I use mine a lot for hunting in my back yard. It's great at close range with shot shells, but at far range the #9 lead shots loose their speed. With beeman crow magnum pellets, I shot several shots at 3/4 inch plywood, and it penetrated it with ease, leaving a very large exit wound. however, it is very hard to hunt with the pellets because there is only a front sight and cannot dependably... You need to add a scope stop. This is necessary on all spring guns but Gamo didn't include one like with their other guns because I guess they intended it to be used with shot shells primarily. You can get one off pyramidair for like $10. Also a good solid 1 piece steel scope mount would help too.

Written on: 13/03/2007 by varmit killer

I received this shotgun/rifle for Christmas and it is the neatest airgun I've owned. It is perfect for rats and mice when over penetration is an issue. I have even taken a rabbit with this rifle from a distance of thirteen yards with the shotshells. That is the furthest distance that I would go for this size game while using shotshells though. If you end up purchasing this rifle, you can reload the shotshells by using low-density foam for the base wad, and bit of a cotton ball for the front.... (read more)

its foam for crafts, get the 2mm thick kind, Also you need a hand held 1/4" hole punch (regular paper punch is too big) you punch the hole, take the 1/4" circie of foam, push it in put in the shot, then use thick paper, or some cotton ball for the front to hold the shot in

I was looking at airguns online and I came across the Gamo Viper Express air rifle. It sounded like an interesting concept so I purchased one from Pyramidair for $229 along with some shot cartridges. A week later it showed up at my front door. Upon opening the box, the gun looked quite nice. It looked just like a single shot 28 gauge break open shotgun. It shoots special .22 shot shells that are for sale for around $8 for 25 of them. The gun also shoots pellets through a special adapter. ... (read more)

I found the review to be pretty useful. I've been thinking about this airshotgun a little bit and it seems to do pretty good for what it is. I've heard many folks complain about the range not being long enough and things of the such but it seems not only an interesting pest gun (to avoid over penetration) but also a nice little show piece showing everyone what adult airguns are all about. Very helpful, thanks for the review

Your welcome. I am so happy with this rifle, the $229 was well worth it. I have also herd people complain about the range. You can't expect 12 gauge performance from an air shotgun. From point blank to 15 yards the shot shells are fine. Any further and you can use pellets. I just killed a turkey at 20 yards the other day with one shot to the head with a JSB Predator .22 pellet. It did the usual flopping around for 15 seconds but killed it it did. It is by far the most versital airgun ever.

Gun is nice and well made, would like to see more shot in ammo. I think ammo is over priced at 8.00 dollars a box for 25 which is 16.00 dollars for fifty. We are only shooting bird shot with air, not rifle cartridges. I like the 22 pellet option built into gun, but I think they should have put some rifleling in barrel to keep pellet from tumbling for accuracy in a gun that is advertised at shooting a 22 pellet at 700 fps. Overall I like it and am sure I will have lots of fun with it.

Actually, I get about an 18 inch group at 15 yards with the shotshells. The pellets group about 1.5 inches at 15 yards. Quite fine for a smooth bore. It shoots around 650fp with pellets and around 600 with the shotshells.

Correction about the group with the shotshells. I think i got a bad batch. When i took one apart the shot was not uniform and was all messed up. Got some more from another lot and now I get a 13 inch group at 15 yards. Pellets group about 1 to 1.5 at 15 yards. Fine for backyard hunting and will kill any small rodent you shoot.

You can reuse the Gamo shotshell cases to reload your own shotshell loads. As mentioned in the first review by varmintkiller, just use a piece of foam for the base of the cartridge, then use #9, or #8 shot for better penetration, and a bit of cotton, etc. to top it off. I've done the same thing with my Crosman 1100 CO2 shotgun that uses a similar shot case, but is 3/8" diameter (.375"). The disadvantage of CO2 is that it can't be used if the air temperature drops much below 70 degrees F.
I just purchased one of the Gamo vipers and am looking forward to using it. Thanks for your review.

One possibility that MAY add more accuracy for pellets is to find a way to put rifling into the brass pellet adapter. You wouldn't want much twist, due to the light weight of the pellet... I would think a quarter turn the length of the adapter. This MIGHT stabilize the pellet as it goes the rest of the way down the barrel and downrange... worth a try.

As mentioned in Pat 123's review, rifling has a detrimental effect on shot pellets. It tends to open up the group much quicker, which reduces the energy downrange, plus patterns tend to be inconsistent, as the pellet group, in effect, is spiraling through the air like a piece of rope wrapped in a long helix around a pole. I would think the shot pattern on impact would be lopsided.

I use a standard 1/4" paper punch to punch out the thin foam like those found in hobby stores for crafts and scrap booking. Here in the US you can find it at Wal Mart in large plastic tubs shaped in circles, stars, triangles, etc. It's about 1/16" thick. I push the lower "wad" into the shell with a small dowel. Make sure it goes in straight so the shot won't leak out. Put in the shot, then put another foam "wad" over the top. They will stay fairly well as is, but, a drop of candle wax will help hold it in place if need be.

I found that #8 shot has better penetration, although you only get about 13 versus 19 #9 shot for the same weight. It still gives a decent shot pattern and effect.

The information that smitty has given will be very useful to all viper express shooters and everyone will be able to save a lot of money from buying shells. I am still a little vague on the foam - when you say plastic tubs shaped in circles- stars- triangles at walmart - what dept do i find them in and what am i looking for- kitchen items- decorations- and is the foam like what is used for shipping electronics or packing peanuts or is this 1/16 plastic like in dish water tubs? Anyway thank you so much for your previous information.

Go to the Crafts area at WalMart or any department store. The tubs are round plastic. The foam is in shapes and different colors. The foam is also available in sheets. It's not hard plastic like a wash tub, but soft and easy to cut, etc. It's used for decorations, greeting cards and scrap booking.

My gun is now fully broken in and velocity has improved some. It now shoots at about 700 fps with pellets and 650 with the shot. I found that the chrony was not that accurate with the shotshells. Because the chrony uses light to pick up the projectile, it needs to read the shot as one object. Unfortunately, the shot is already started to scatter at a few feet. It's only like an inch or less but I guess it's enough to confuse the chrony with this small amount of shot at these low velocities. Therefor it shows slightly less than what it's really shooting. So far the gun has performed great. I use it for shooting birds in the barn where a traditional pellet gun would cause damage. I added a 1-4x scope, a one piece scope mount, and a scope stop. It gives fairly good accuracy out to 30 yards. At thirty yards, it's about a 2 inch group. Fine for some midnight rabbit and coon hunting on the farm. Took out a raccoon in my trash can with a Crosman pointed pellet so the power with pellets is definitely there. The Crosman pointed pellets are better for penetration and shock while the predators which I use when I can't afford overpenetration, are better for maximum stopping power. I'm using it with pellets more now because my shadow 1000 mainspring broke.
