I picked my SMK 1790 Biathlon Trainer .177 up at a yard sale for 10 bucks and have as much fun plinking and getting rid of unwanted critters around the bird feeder as I do with my $125 Gamo Shadow 1000. I recommend it for kids and adults that don't have a lot of upper body strength. Plus it makes less noise than the Shadow 1000.

Lightweight, safety goes on when cocked so it is perfect for young hunters. Front sight element gathers lots of light, rear peep sight helps those of us with less than perfect eyes. consistent placement of the pellets.. Easy to cock.

Bad points are long travel on the trigger is good and bad. The rear peep sight is difficult to get right, It is a piece of flat plastic that adjust for up/down and left/right at the same time. once it is finally adjusted it is perfect but takes a while.

I have been shooting for seven months now and found the SMK 1970 Biathlon trainer to be great, now moved on to the cometa 220. A good first gun for beginners, very accurate and great for plinking. Only 4.5 ft pound so bit of a struggle for knock down targets witch i like to do at my local club.

SMK 1790 Biathlon Trainer .177 Air Rifle has a velocity of 450ft/lbs, muzzle energy of about 3.24 ft pounds (well within the law of 12 ft/lbs before you need a firearms certificate). Nice light rifle, looks and feels comfortable, the pistol grip makes a big difference. It has a safety catch and in good position.

Now correctly sighted, i.e start at 6 yards, first rest the rifle on a level surface, say a chair or something with the muzzle exactly same height as the centre of target, say 20 in ...
