Good Points: Lots 'o power, good balance, well built, can be had economically if bought used

Bad Points: Side lever can be a hassle hunting in scrub, stock has little character (buy a 52)Without a scope, the gun is nose heavy

General comments: When I was younger, I used to see Model 48s at gun shows and marvel at their weight and character. A few years later, I was able to purchase a RWS Diana 48 .177 cal for myself, and have been using it steadily for the past decade. I haven't much to add beyond the reviews seen here: the 48 is a legendary air rifle, and for good reason. It is a consistent shooter, composed of quality parts, and is heavy enough to offset the 'twang' particular to powerful spring guns. Mine chronos at over 1000 fps with a range of pellets and will also group very nicely off the bench. As stated by others, the sites are a weak link; I replaced them with a Simmons 4X scope and a 1-piece mount. My gun has also been fully deburred and lubed, but maintains the stock internals. No twang to speak of, just a solid 'thunk' when the trigger is depressed. In general, this gun is a delight to shoot. I recently loaned it to my father who still farms and he uses it to keep the pigeon/squirrel/sparrow populaces at reasonable proportions. In the future, I intend to buy a 48 in .22 and seriously test its hunting potential.

I have owned this gun for many years and it can be a challenge to shoot because of the heavy recoil. Once you get used to it it's fine but takes a little time to adjust. It will on a good day break the sound barrier but it really likes the Crosman premier 10.5 grain pellets. Because of the power I often hit black birds and the pellet goes clean through. I use this gun for varmit control and I find more success shooting off of a tripod. The gun is to heavy to shoot standing for any length of tim ...

I purchased this RWS DIANA 48 .177 cal rifle a few years ago based on info I received from talking to other shooters and shop owners. Good advice, good choice.

There are other fine airguns but I am totally satisfied with the RWS Diana 48. The fit and finish is mostly first rate, as you would expect from German arms makers. It's definitely a quality arm with few nits.

It's consistently accurate and powerful at any range.

Nits: Plastic trigger and guard, cheesy sheet metal sight ...
