Informal restaurant in attractive old building. Good but simple food with a strong emphasis on local food. Also a really good value for money, we went during a Lobster promotion in August which was much more keenly priced than the nearby Loch Fyne. Walmgate and Fossgate host a range of good independent restaurants (plus Loch Fyne); one of the really good point is that this place has a large seating area so you can go anytime and there are plenty of alternatives nearby.

The food was poor at Melton's Too restaurant in York, as was the service. The Yorkblue salad was swimming in olive oil. The main course (venison) was very tough. When asked if we were enjoying the meal, I politely mentioned this to be told my comments would be passed to the chef. The staff then resumed their conversation.
