There is something essential about Sunyata's sound: a simplicity pervaded with complexity. Skillful assembly of multitrack recordings by the multi-instrumentalist ex-pat Scot Stuart Munro and Sunyata partner, Jim Gawne, combines a global cast in percussion (dholak, djembe, aboriginal wood sticks and the sacrilage of using a bodhran as a kick drum!) with the familiar passionate song of the flamenco-style solo, but played on an equally exotic cast of stringed amigos. The context flits between a mellow Texan stroll (akin to Dylan's soundtrack to Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid) to a full blooded Andalucian gallop. Sparks may not always fly but Sunyata's novelty of approach, imaginative lines and clearly heartfelt playing make Gypsy Sun a valuable contribution to world musics fusion and a most enjoyable listen.
