I am a british citizen and earnmore than 50K . My bank acount application was rejected on the basis that I have unsecured lending ( a student loan of 35K). How do they expect a student to pay back loan if they stop them to have a bank account. Shame on you HSBC. They use some useless tools whereas they dont even check who and what the person actually does. The qualification and the contribution to the society. HSBC are a truely terrible bank. They charge constantly, they are obsessed with charging. My husband was with them since the early 70s when they were midland bank. They were ok for a long time. Now they are money grabbing and charge obsessed. We are switching now. Looking for another bank. We don't have a formal overdraft, they would'nt give us one. We go over a lot. This partly due to their obsessive charging. They froze his bank account when in credit. Cancelled direct debits. Refused... (read more)

I have banked with HSBC for over 20 years and in the beginning the personal service and account was excellent. Even now the online banking is easy and secure. However, about 4 years ago they decided to change their policies and rescind an overdraft facility I had held up till then. Since that date all thay have attempted to do is get charges from me at every opportunity. I love HSBC.
People on here complain about the bank charges however if you compare them to other banks... especially Lloyds TSB they charge no where near as much. Lloyds charge by the day and don't tell you till you are a few days in. HSBC charge if you go over once. HSBC will allow up to £10 without charging. Lloyds charged my partner £6 a day for 10 days once because he went £1 over drawn and didn't even ring to warn him. Nor did he get the money back. You won't see other banks do...

I have been banking with HSBC for 16 years (since it was Midland Bank) and also have opened an account with them for my 2yr old. I have always been really happy with them and the customer service has always been great.

Have been with HSBC since 2006. At one point they had all my personal and business banking. Was with their premier service, and that was when the problems started:

Now that appears to have changed...
I don ' t remember being told I ' d slipped over my overdraft limit and seemed more willing to charge me rather than to tell you. £25 penalty is the normal charge if I am over, and as I found they will stop direct debt of £20, charge me and then take out £30 if this payment is for my HSBC credit card.

I was with HSBC for about 6 years and in that time I was charged over £1000 in fees- usually because the fees added each month pushed my overdraft further into the red, causing more fees. Despite repeated attempts to sort out a payment plan with them, asking them to freeze charges so I could actually get the situation sorted I was met with a blank wall. I've been with HSBC for 14 years and have never had a major issue with them. I have gone overdrawn a few times, but have always phoned them once I've realized and convinced them not to charge fees. Also, they are flexible if you need to increase your overdraft for a few weeks at the end of the month (although you obviously pay the interest for it). I have banked with them for 15 years, but I have now had enough of their poor customer service and lack of helpfulness when I needed them. Like many who complain here, I have had overdraft problems (my fault I completely accept), but when the charges stack up each month, it's not difficult to get in a vicious circle where the charges send you overdrawn the next month. After banking with them for 16 years, they have finally crushed my belief in general human decency. Unable to help a graduate student climb out of his overdraft by charging up to £100 per month with £20 interest on an unauthorised overdraft. The crux of the situation is, if HSBC had not charged that very first time I went over slightly, then I would not have gone over the next month by more, and the next month by more again, due to their increasing charges. My partner and I arranged a mortgage with HSBC earlier this year. I have been banking with HSBC for less than a year, but in my experience with other international banks, they have the poorest service levels.
I went on holiday and accidentally went overdrawn. I have gone overdrawn by 51 pence, for which they charged me £25, and because of that, a direct debit sent my account over their 'agreed' £50 limit for being overdrawn, so it gets sent back, they charge me £30 for it, oh and another £25 gets added for an overdraft 'review fee'.
Overdrawn by £0.51,...

HSBC are too big. They don't know what is going on, and they don't seem to care. I banked with HSBC since I left school (15 years ago). I went on holiday for 2 months and made use of my internet banking over the time I was abroad. I returned to find that they "could not get in touch with me" and had closed my account down!!! This complaint is reflective of the level of service currently provided by so many particularly major ‘UK’ businesses! Our various governments have failed to protect genuine UK industry and commerce and have vigorously endorsed lower education and training standards within an escalating spiral of madness. Companies now principally rely on computers (not people) and have to compete with overseas companies who inter alia pay their workers for example thirty pence per hour. Whilst I mean absolutely no disrespect to foreigners – this country will very soon totally depend on overseas workers working for pitifully low wages.
Incidentally, speaking of HSBC – my wife recently had her SWITCH card refused because it had expired. Her card has a stated expiry date of 05/06 and ‘bounced’ on 1st May! Fortunately she had enough cash to pay, but could have easily been stranded penniless! Her new card has yet to arrive. My card likewise expired but a new one has been received today 03/05/06.
