I am a british citizen and earnmore than 50K . My bank acount application was rejected on the basis that I have unsecured lending ( a student loan of 35K). How do they expect a student to pay back loan if they stop them to have a bank account. Shame on you HSBC. They use some useless tools whereas they dont even check who and what the person actually does. The qualification and the contribution to the society. Instead of helping peoplein bad times, when they are not allowing a person... (read more)

I ve been an HSBC customer for almost three years now (since I first came to the UK) had a passport account and was happy in general with the bank. Since I was new to the country I could only open a passport account, but as I graduated an dstarted working here I became a permanent resident entered the electoral roll and only the rest... so finally it was time for me to upgrade my account to a simple current account (so that i would stop paying the ridiculous amount of 10 pounds a month for... HSBC are a truely terrible bank. They charge constantly, they are obsessed with charging. My husband was with them since the early 70s when they were midland bank. They were ok for a long time. Now they are money grabbing and charge obsessed. We are switching now. Looking for another bank. We don't have a formal overdraft, they would'nt give us one. We go over a lot. This partly due to their obsessive charging. They froze his bank account when in credit. Cancelled direct debits. Refused... (read more)

Get this; I have income over £100k and bank with another bank, not HSBC. However, I have a business account with HSBC (limited company for last 2.5 years - operated the account flawlessly). Never missed payment on a personal bill either, ever ... since I first started working in 1991. Aug 2012, wanted to open a personal current account and a deposit account, to make it easier to switch monies from the business account to personal account;went in with £10k cheque to open up the account. ... I have banked with HSBC for over 20 years and in the beginning the personal service and account was excellent. Even now the online banking is easy and secure. However, about 4 years ago they decided to change their policies and rescind an overdraft facility I had held up till then. Since that date all thay have attempted to do is get charges from me at every opportunity. Loyalty counts for nothing I am in process of cancelling account and moving to co-op whose customer service is better... (read more)

I love HSBC.
People on here complain about the bank charges however if you compare them to other banks... especially Lloyds TSB they charge no where near as much. Lloyds charge by the day and don't tell you till you are a few days in. HSBC charge if you go over once. HSBC will allow up to £10 without charging. Lloyds charged my partner £6 a day for 10 days once because he went £1 over drawn and didn't even ring to warn him. Nor did he get the money back. You won't see other banks do... (read more)

I have been banking with HSBC for 16 years (since it was Midland Bank) and also have opened an account with them for my 2yr old. I have always been really happy with them and the customer service has always been great.
Recently they seem to be more concerned with big corporate accounts and are really not bothered with dealing with the little people. Getting to a branch is becoming increasingly difficult, branches are having their opening times reduced and other small branches are closed. My... (read more)

have had a bank account with HSBC for years, I only have a £250 overdraft with them. I have previously had a credit card with them with a limit of £6500 and a loan of £100000 which I have now paid off. I have run into a few unexpected payments over the last couple of months so I went into my local branch today so ask if they could increase my overdraft to £750 to cover this months bills. I have been banking with HSBC for 3 years now. I have a current account, savings account and credit card which I have always managed very well.
I had a couple of weeks of financial difficulty recently, I went over my overdraft limit by £200 for 5 days. HSBC charged me £200.
I called their customer service team (a translator would have been helpful) to see if there is anything they can do as I can't afford to pay these charges and didn't want my credit rating to be affected by not paying... (read more)

I have banked with HSBC all my banking life, and never having required an overdraft or loan they have always been fine. However I recently got a new job that required me to relocate and in need of some temp funds. Clearly having the money avalible to repay any debt within 3 weeks time (at the time of my first pay cheque), they declined to offer me any lending atall without reason.

Have been with HSBC since 2006. At one point they had all my personal and business banking. Was with their premier service, and that was when the problems started:
All my accounts were down-graded without my knowledge. The neither wrote nor telephoned. This was when I had used the premier debit card to pay for a family holiday over Christmas. Guess what, at the last minute found out we were not covered with travel insurance. Less than happy.

I have been with HSBC for about two years now, for both business and personal. They always been helpful and I think their offer for business customers is very good value per money. I have been with HSBC for around 14 years, they were very helpful with processing my loans and over draft as a student.
Now that appears to have changed...
I don ' t remember being told I ' d slipped over my overdraft limit and seemed more willing to charge me rather than to tell you. £25 penalty is the normal charge if I am over, and as I found they will stop direct debt of £20, charge me and then take out £30 if this payment is for my HSBC credit card.
The service is poor from HSBC, so... (read more)

I'm very disappointed with these guys. I've had a very bad year with them. I was £11 overdrawn for less than 24hrs and when I went in to make a deposit I found I'd been charged £25! a few days later same thing happened, this time for a couple of pounds and bam another £25 was charged. I was with HSBC for about 6 years and in that time I was charged over £1000 in fees- usually because the fees added each month pushed my overdraft further into the red, causing more fees. Despite repeated attempts to sort out a payment plan with them, asking them to freeze charges so I could actually get the situation sorted I was met with a blank wall. They are very quick to offer loans, even phoning me up to ask me to take out a personal loan when I first had my overdraft. I would not... (read more)

I hate HSBC bank! I have been a customer of theirs for 11 years and they have never once helped me out when my finances were getting in a mess. On several occasions, I have asked for an increase in my overdraft, by less than £500 temporarily, and you'd think I was asking for a kidney.

I've been with HSBC for 14 years and have never had a major issue with them. I have gone overdrawn a few times, but have always phoned them once I've realized and convinced them not to charge fees. Also, they are flexible if you need to increase your overdraft for a few weeks at the end of the month (although you obviously pay the interest for it). I have banked with them for 15 years, but I have now had enough of their poor customer service and lack of helpfulness when I needed them. Like many who complain here, I have had overdraft problems (my fault I completely accept), but when the charges stack up each month, it's not difficult to get in a vicious circle where the charges send you overdrawn the next month. They sent me a "we notice you are going overdrawn. How can we help you sort it out?" letter recently, so I called them and... (read more)

After banking with them for 16 years, they have finally crushed my belief in general human decency. Unable to help a graduate student climb out of his overdraft by charging up to £100 per month with £20 interest on an unauthorised overdraft. The crux of the situation is, if HSBC had not charged that very first time I went over slightly, then I would not have gone over the next month by more, and the next month by more again, due to their increasing charges. My partner and I arranged a mortgage with HSBC earlier this year. The first mortgage payment (scheduled to be taken from our HSBC bank account) was rejected, and upon closer inspection, the account number they had arranged to take the money from wasn't even ours! I have been banking with HSBC for less than a year, but in my experience with other international banks, they have the poorest service levels.
I went on holiday and accidentally went overdrawn. I have gone overdrawn by 51 pence, for which they charged me £25, and because of that, a direct debit sent my account over their 'agreed' £50 limit for being overdrawn, so it gets sent back, they charge me £30 for it, oh and another £25 gets added for an overdraft 'review fee'.
Overdrawn by £0.51,... (read more)

HSBC are too big. They don't know what is going on, and they don't seem to care. I banked with HSBC since I left school (15 years ago). I went on holiday for 2 months and made use of my internet banking over the time I was abroad. I returned to find that they "could not get in touch with me" and had closed my account down!!! I first joined HSBC looking for a solo card. I went to my current bank (The Derbyshire) and they hadn't even heard of it. So I went to the local HSBC branch.
