Bad Points: Not helpful and not proactive enough.

General comments: I have been with HSBC for around 14 years, they were very helpful with processing my loans and over draft as a student.
Now that appears to have changed...
I don ' t remember being told I ' d slipped over my overdraft limit and seemed more willing to charge me rather than to tell you. £25 penalty is the normal charge if I am over, and as I found they will stop direct debt of £20, charge me and then take out £30 if this payment is for my HSBC credit card.
The service is poor from HSBC, so now I am afraid I would say search the market more.
Something worth noting, if like me, consumers have issues with charges or account, experts always say tell the banks my concerns and any problems I might face so I can seek help from them! This made matters worse in my experience, I was phoned constantly about being over my overdraft and offered no help.

I'm very disappointed with these guys. I've had a very bad year with them. I was £11 overdrawn for less than 24hrs and when I went in to make a deposit I found I'd been charged £25! a few days later same thing happened, this time for a couple of pounds and bam another £25 was charged. Its ridiculous. I wish they'd at least notify you first, or give you a window period to pay back...and then charge you. I'm looking to change banks. any suggestions?

I was with HSBC for about 6 years and in that time I was charged over £1000 in fees- usually because the fees added each month pushed my overdraft further into the red, causing more fees. Despite repeated attempts to sort out a payment plan with them, asking them to freeze charges so I could actually get the situation sorted I was met with a blank wall.
They are very quick to offer loans, even phoning me up to ask me to take out a personal loan when I first had my overdraft. I would not h ...

In 4 years I had only gone overdrawn once, by £9 and for a matter of hours before I moved money to the account from my HSBC instant access savings. When abroad I phoned HSBC and got my balance then withdraw money I was told I had. HSBC had not deducted a pending cash withdrawal from 2 days earlier and as such I went overdrawn by £90 which was resolved the next day (when I realised) and money was moved from the HSBC savings account. No bounced cheques / well run account and HSBC er ...

I have been with HSBC for almost 2 years and have not had a single good experience. From them losing my card and pin for over 6 weeks, to their processes not allowing me to have print out of bank statement with a company letter head (this affected my visa application!), to HSBC not closing my account despite the fact that they called to confirm they had received my request of closure.

HSBC - i have been with them for 12 years. They charge you £25 for going overdrawn for 1 day and then you receive a letter saying an temporary overdraft is set up you go in and they are unable to give you an overdraft of £45 to cover a direct debt then when it goes out they charge you £25 fee and a £15 recall fee, for again 1 day. They seem more concerned with new customers that once you 1 year in the mess you around. DONT DO IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hate HSBC bank! I have been a customer of theirs for 11 years and they have never once helped me out when my finances were getting in a mess. On several occasions, I have asked for an increase in my overdraft, by less than £500 temporarily, and you'd think I was asking for a kidney.

More recently, my father died and I asked for help with his funeral expenses. Again, I got passed from one telephonist to another, racking up a hefty phone bill only to be told there was nothing they coul ...

Someone sent me $6k on the 28th March 2006 via the telegraphic transfer method to ensure reliability. My friend sent the money but put in the wrong account number by one missing zero and as of today's date October 1st 2007 the funds are still not with me, at no point has HSBC contacted me to ask if I am expecting the funds nor have they informed Lloyds TSB that the funds are sitting in a frozen account somewhere in HSBC. As you can see HSBC have kept the funds and have informed no one of the sit ...

I've been with HSBC for 14 years and have never had a major issue with them. I have gone overdrawn a few times, but have always phoned them once I've realized and convinced them not to charge fees.
Also, they are flexible if you need to increase your overdraft for a few weeks at the end of the month (although you obviously pay the interest for it). I don't visit the main branch so can't comment on the branch service, but I have just used their new paying in machine and it's brilliant - even sc ...

I have been with HSBC for nearly 6 years now, and I have to say overall, I am impressed with them. When I was always in credit they have been nothing but nice to me. However, you cross that line, like I did when I brought my first house, and they come down on you like a tonne of bricks. Over the past year I am being charged between £50 - £150 per month alone. Even though, whenever I notice I may be about to go over my current account overdraft, I always put some more money into my ac ...

I have banked with them for 15 years, but I have now had enough of their poor customer service and lack of helpfulness when I needed them. Like many who complain here, I have had overdraft problems (my fault I completely accept), but when the charges stack up each month, it's not difficult to get in a vicious circle where the charges send you overdrawn the next month. They sent me a "we notice you are going overdrawn. How can we help you sort it out?" letter recently, so I called them and disc ...

After banking with them for 16 years, they have finally crushed my belief in general human decency. Unable to help a graduate student climb out of his overdraft by charging up to £100 per month with £20 interest on an unauthorised overdraft. The crux of the situation is, if HSBC had not charged that very first time I went over slightly, then I would not have gone over the next month by more, and the next month by more again, due to their increasing charges. I have managed to get o ...

My partner and I arranged a mortgage with HSBC earlier this year. The first mortgage payment (scheduled to be taken from our HSBC bank account) was rejected, and upon closer inspection, the account number they had arranged to take the money from wasn't even ours! They had attempted to take our first mortgage payment from another customers account, and through no fault of our own we suddenly found ourselves with a 'missed payment'! It took numerous phone calls and several letters before we receiv ...

I have been banking with HSBC for less than a year, but in my experience with other international banks, they have the poorest service levels.

I went on holiday and accidentally went overdrawn. I have gone overdrawn by 51 pence, for which they charged me £25, and because of that, a direct debit sent my account over their 'agreed' £50 limit for being overdrawn, so it gets sent back, they charge me £30 for it, oh and another £25 gets added for an overdraft 'review fee'.

HSBC are too big. They don't know what is going on, and they don't seem to care. I banked with HSBC since I left school (15 years ago). I went on holiday for 2 months and made use of my internet banking over the time I was abroad. I returned to find that they "could not get in touch with me" and had closed my account down!!! I was furious!! If you have a complaint you will be referred to India or Germany, and these people do not have a clue what is going on.

After approximately 13 years with HSBC I have finally got fed up of the appalling service I have received. I am ashamed to say that I stayed for ease but they have finally pushed me too far. Beware, aggressive staff who constantly give out wrong information and a poor complaints process; i.e. no-one ever calls you back. Put your money somewhere safer!

HSBC Current Account - I've been with HSBC bank for well over 15 years. Their branch service is good and their internet banking site is the best that I currently use. If any one from Tesco PF is reading this, try and have a look at the HSBC site, it knocks your site for six!

HSBC phone banking is now partly based in India and there are language difficulties. I know why they moved it, to save money. Well pass this saving on to your customers in the form of more competitive interest rates!

I joined HSBC on a student account, mainly because of they introductary offer of £50 however I have been really pleased with them thanks to the way the bank bends over backwards to help you, out, the £10 overdraft buffer zone is also very usefull.

That said however the credit card interest is fairly high, and sometimes half of what you pay off goes towards pay of that months interest

I first joined HSBC looking for a solo card. I went to my current bank (The Derbyshire) and they hadn't even heard of it. So I went to the local HSBC branch. I asked if they did solo cards and the clerk handed me a leaflet to fill in. I did so there and then and was taken to a room where my account was set up. The whole thing took 20 min at MAX. I got a free savings account as well and a free gift. I had to barely do anything. HSBC has provided me with a place to put my cash so it is ready to be ...
