i have a 2001 gu patrol.I let the tires down to 20 psi or less and nothing down the beach or sand dunes stops it.Does a little over 900km to both tanks. Mind you i have chip and 3inch exhaust.Over all very happy :)

I owned a Y61 model (Patrol 3.0dit) for 10 years and I dont really understand how all this people can tell so much rubbish about such strong-powerfull-stopless real 4x4.
I sold it @ 250.000km for 12.500 euros, and belive me I HAVE DONE 3 SEVICES ONLY!!!! driven always on highwy at 150km/h and country road with lots of bumps, plus the off road, across rivers, 1meter of mud, sand ICE and so on...
UNDERSTUD!!! I changed oil and filters 3 TIMES in 10 years of heavy duty stress.
NEVER HAD A PROBLEM AT ALL, @ 200.000km I just cleaned the injectors and adjusted the clochet.
So all you people with fake problems and -lotta wanna talk rubbish of something I dont know: Shush and drive your economy car and complain for something real.

Patrol 3.0l GR has been less reliable than my old Disco - flywheel gone spending more time in garage than anywhere- can't get parts. Bought it to cope with winters in N E Scoland but not sure if it can as spent more time in garage. Have borrowed a Peugot 206 and this works better than the Patrol.

Nissan Patrol 3litre GR turbo diesel. The only vehicle I have ever owned where the exhaust system outlasted the fuel tank (three and a half years) the exhaust system is still going strong. Diesel fuel pump does not like frosty north of Scotland winters - re built for £2,000.00p. Spare parts very expensive - £300 plus for brake calipers. Sway bar/ antil roll bar £1,300. Nissan UK worse than useless - does Nissan Japan realise just how poor the dealership service really is???? Any future new vehicle - I will check out the cost of spares first.

my nissan patrol 3 litre gr, just blown 2 cylinders, and the others don't look too clever,so i'm still paying for a car that is doing the wrong kind of off roading,at least the landrover discovery we have just plods on,and is older,me thinks won't be buying japanese anymore.

We have owned a Nissan 3.0 turbo diesel for 8 years . Its on its 3rd engine and only done 92000 miles . Nissan UK have been useless and deny that there is a design fault with the engine . I really don't understand why these vehicles get reviews stating there bullet proof. My advice is avoid like the plague and buy a Toyota or Land Rover instead .

Purchased used Nissan Patrol 30k miles, chosen for claimed reliability and lower priced than equivalent 4x4's. I actually quite liked it and it was civilised on road, however it did prove unreliable with various electrical problems. It was only average off road and build quality was poor compared to some of it's rivals, indeed the front foot wells sufferred serious corrosion and some panels were flimsy and dented easily. I now own a Land rover Defender, and quite frankly it is far superior to the Patrol. The Defender may be crude on road, but it is unmatched off it, it is also better built, much more robust and despite what other envious 4x4 owners spout, it has no serious rival, the Landcruiser is probably the best of the rest.

Nissan Patrol GR 3.0 Turbo Diesel
Blew out a piston & turbo @ 148000 km driving on the highway @ 130KM/Hr
Engine loosing cooling liquid since 120000 km.
Very robust car, the 3.0 diesel engine has worthless quality however.

Nissan Patrol GR 3.0 turbo diesel will blow piston and turbo before it reaches 200,000 kms. this is a very common problem. the motor will cost you a minimum $12,000. nissan are obviously very aware of this problem

i used in the middle east and afghanistan. the work horse of the world. 350,000 KMH's and all i replaced on my 1998 Y61 Nissan Patrol super safari was the tyres and the battery.
tyre wear on the front outta edge, lower bushes on the front trail arm wear out quick when it lives in the desert . but its all simple to fix and costs peanuts.
the euro version 2.8 is under powered unlike the middle east version 4.5 and 4.8 petrol engines.
im on my 3rd patrol and its part of my life and i love it. its a great 4x4 for the die hard 4x4 off roader.

An alround amazing motor. Like driving an all terrain leather arm chair!, but built like a sherman tank. solid.

The Nissan Patrol GR 3.0 is a nice size, has a good reliable 6 cylinder diesel engine, and in my opinion is great value for money. The performance is great, same with practicality and same on reliability.

Since my review given in Aug 2006 have just suffered engine failure, Nissan Patrol is 2001 model, with 3 ltr T/D ony 75,200 miles and very regularly serviced (every 6,000 miles), Just being checked as I write this, but not happy that this so-called tough engine is not!
I preferred the 4.2 ltd Diesel 6 cylinder.
Anyone else had problems with the 3 ltd T/D ??

Just got my 2001 Patrol 3.0 diesel back from the wotkshop aftel an engine failure, blowed 2 pistons.
Bought a overhauled (they said) from england, installed this one in my car and it was just as damaged as my "old" engine of 200.000 km.
Had to buy another used engine to get it working again...
This redicolouse car has cost me 12400£

The Nissan Patrol 3.0 has more power than the 4.2. It tows a 20ft caravan very well. Good to drive and the auto is excellent around town. Also for towing. Would have another one. So far at 90,000 there are no problems showing up. Runs like new.

Don't buy a Nissan Patrol - you are asking for some very expensive trouble in the near future.

Timeless looks, built to last. Might be clumsy around town buy 100% reliable. Had a trooper, reliable, and tough, but seats tilted foward, 4x4 system out of the ark. Had Land Rover, Discovery & Range Rover, auto boxes all went wrong, costly repair, head gasket on disco, landy great off road, but too basic, all overated status symbol. Patrol great off road, could drive through a house, tow a tank, loads of grunt. Despite weight, still get 30mpg. Fulfills all my shooting requirments, its not quick, but it keeps going, have seen older ones with over 200000 on clock. not everyones cup of tea, but its my pride and joy!

Have used the Nissan Patrol GR 3.0 as a tow unit for 21 foot caravan all over Australia. I had minor problem with air intake sensor and got excellent support from Nissan. It's a bit cumbersome in city, however, I could not recommend enough! I have heard horror stories but friends with same unit had similar experience to mine, so I do recommend it.

My 4x4s get used for their purpose of working, and whilst regularly serviced they are not 'pampered'!!
I have had several other 4x4s: Troopers, Range Rover, 110 Landrover, Shogun, Discoveries! The Patrols have been the best so far.

The Nissan Patrol GR is a great 4x4 comfortable safe and reliable.

I was about to ask has anyone anything good to say about these engines? I just got a 2001 (2002 model) with 195000 km on it and was getting nervous about all the negative opinions

The early ZD30 DI models 99 -01 were faulty, they left the factory with a small sump and short dipstick (sump aprox 6.2liters) they used use some oil in between services like anything else so that meant at times the engine could have ran dangerously low on oil.
these early patrols were all recalled and replaced with a longer dipstick and oil capacity increased to 8.2liters.
03 onwards models they had significant ECU and electronic changes, aswell as the larger sump and dipstick from factory, piston injectors were modified as far as i know and some other changes like extra oil sensors in the engine, these engines prooved bulletproof and i myself own a 04 model with over 350000 kmh's and it still runs like new!.
best of luck
