My complaint is with poor customer service from the 24 hr helpline. I fell and suspected that I had broken my wrist. When I rang the Helpline they just said 'go to any hospital' which I did, having to take advice from hotel receptionist. On arrival at the hospital, they said they did not honour travel insurance and that I would have to pay upfront and claim back from the insurers. When I rang the Helpline again, they would not guarantee reimbursement and I should go to another hospital. This I did - all the while in great pain. Here the doctor had to fax a report to the insurer before they would guarantee payment and even then the insurers Turkish accountant had to be contacted and a fax sent by him to the hospital. After 2 hours of telephone calls and waiting for faxes, I finally had an x-ray and a plaster on my arm and I paid the hospital the excess. I have learned from this experience to find out beforehand what one should expect if a situation occurs while you are abroad. This is difficult if taking out insurance online.

Sainsbury's Bank Travel Insurance has excellent plan cover for the year at an excellent cost. Covers all necessary points in the information leaflet and the call centre are always on hand if you have any queries. Excellent cover and great value for money. Plus great Nectar points offer.

The travel insurance claims department should advise immediately on the feasibility of a claim. As such, I know have a bill that started at $1000, and due to lagging of Sainsbury's Bank, it is now $2500 with interest. I am left with no option but to pay a US medical debt collection agency, even though I have paid 3 years premiums to Sainsbury's AND followed all the rules.
