Good Points: Very graceful looking marine fish
Can become "hand tame" - with care
Bad Points: Poisonous - worth informing the local hospital you are keeping them !
General comments: The name Dragonfish is often used to describe this fish but it is actually called a Lionfish and is recognised by its extremely long and graceful spines - the dorsal ones being highly venomous.
They are extremely predatory and any smaller sized fish will rapidly be snapped up - however, we fed ours on earthworms.
When we purchased ours, the dealer sold them in various sizes and each had its own caution. They all can inflict a very nasty sting but the larger ones have a more concentrated venom which is worse than a hornet sting but less than a snake bite - either way if you do get stung it is worth seeking medical help immediately !
They are not as dangerous as say piranhas so cleaning an occupied fish tank - hands in water is possible. If they see you or any other fish as a threat they bow their heads - ie presenting the spines towards you. At that point ... back off !
If taking live food you will be suprised at just how fast (and wide) their mouths open to take it.
We used to feed our lionfish earth worms by hand and often kept hold of the tail of the worm and got dragged all around the tank - the dorsal fin was always down and presented no threat - maybe the fish enjoyed the tug of war. But when our hands came out of the tank, up came its fins to ward off other fish wanting some of the worm. Unfortunately, it got to a point where our fish was getting too large for the tank - and concerns for our own safety as a 10 inch lionfish is a potential killer.
They look beautiful, are relatively easy to keep and feed but do consider the size of your aquarium as they do grow fairly quickly !
Reccomended - but to experienced fishkeepers.
