Good Points: Can be kept outside in a shallow pond in summer months
    Easy to keep and breed
Needs a lower than usual Tropical temperature

    Bad Points: None

General comments: The actual name is the White Cloud Mountain Minnow but can vary from shop to shop depending how it is labelled.
It is actually a member of the carp family though originates from China and grows to a maximum size of about 4cm (1.5 inches).
It prefers temperatures between 60 and 70 degrees and on a very warm summers day can be put into a garden pond - they will not overwinter though so make sure you can catch them again !
These minnows are very easy to keep, require a ph of between 6 and 8 so not too critical. They accept a wide range of flake food with daphnia and brine shrimp used to bring them to breeding condition. They are also very easy to breed.
However, they are what is known as "egg scatterers" so if you have a small breeding tank with Marbles at the bottom, the eggs will drop between them and not all will be eaten ! Then move the parents back into the main tank afterwards. Eggs hatch in about 50 hours.
I highly reccomend the White Cloud Mountain Minnows for novice breeders. They almost always sell at shops and your local aquarist may buy some from you or trade for food/equipment :-)
