“Don't buy an Ikea Kitchen”

Written on: 16/06/2013 by krackle

We were on a tight budget and had various quotes for the kitchen, prices ranged from $25k down to $17k. I looked onlne and discovered the Ikea Kitchen. That was our first mistake, we designed the kitchen with the help of an Ikea kitchen person, paid nearly $7k and had it delivered. Then we ripped out the old kitchen and began building the Ikea one. How could their kitchen person miss an entire cupboard that was clearly in the design. We returned and had to buy another cupboard, the trip is... (read more)

“Refrigerator, Dishwasher, and oven are problems”

Written on: 10/06/2013 by rllankford (1 review written)

From day 1 the refrigerator did not work. They had to replace a fuse with a bigger fuse for it to work. The oven worked until the first clean cycle, during which the controls melted. The dishwasher did not work at all, and after repair the heavy duty cycle did not work. Flamingo Appliance has been in my house about 8 times since the appliances were installed. Ikea sucks. “Useless 25 year gaurantee”

Written on: 12/05/2013

After 5 years the paint surface on the kitchen has completely broken down. I had to take them to a tribunal before they would supply replacements. Then they wouldn't install the new panels because they had been trimmed to fit appliances. Their guarantee is void if any part of the kitchen is altered, no matter if it is just a few centimeters of the height of a drawer front. Their Guarantee sounds very generous- but read it carefully as in most cases they probably won't have to honour it.... (read more)

“Good value kitchen with lots internal fittings”

We wanted to fit a kitchen which was modern and streamlined with lots of storage. We shopped around did our homework and as we wanted plain white gloss IKEA was we felt a good choice at the budget end of the market. Although we were fairly clear on the design we decided to go for the IKEA design service to give a fresh eye to the layout. He was freelance and the £100 cost was refunded by £50 when we ordered, this was well worth the spend , he asked lots of questions about how we used the... (read more)

“Ikea mixer tap now useless ”

Written on: 29/03/2013 by noddydog (3 reviews written)

About six years ago we had a new kitchen fitted with various Ikea components, including a mixer tap on our kitchen sink. Recently we had issues with this tap and were advised by a plumber to replace the internal cartridge. I emailed Ikea about this in December 2012. A multitude of emails has taken place between now and then. Twice I sent them photos of the tap. Twice they said they were sending a cartridge. Only on the second occasion was I sent the cartridge, which arrived about three... (read more)

I bought Ikea Adel kitchen in yellow-white with beech budget worktops over 10 years ago. The wooden worktops are due to be updated this year, but cabinets are fine and I still like the kitchen style. Some plinths and the door under the sink were showing some wear and tear from exposure to water and I wanted to replace these, although wasn't even thinking of making a claim under the 25 year guarantee. “Quality isnt cheap! ”

I had the misfortune of installing a homeowner designed Ikea kitchen. All i can say is you get what you pay for! These cabinets were the quality of something you would see in a 1990's doublewide! The homeowner thought they looked great! I guess you cant fix stupid! These cabinets were below the "big box stores" quality! We did a lot of research before choosing IKEA for our kitchen. We decided to go with them after having a planning meeting with their planners. I can't describe how sorry we are that we decided to go with IKEA. The kitchen itself is very good - nice quality, soft close doors and drawers and lots of nice options. We ordered an Ikea kitchen to fit ourselves. The cupboards were ok, but the wooden Numenar worktops were terrible. They just weren't finished, they were as rough as fence panels. Every time we contacted IKEA (which in itself was very difficult) they referred us to the catalogue which recommended "gentle sanding and oiling from time to time". I recently updated my Spanish flat with a kitchen from IKEA. To be honest, I was concerned that it appeared "too cheap" to be any good. “Kitchen cabinets - beware of low grade board”

I installed an IKEA kitchen in my house last summer. The cabinets and cupboards were easy to build, fairly easy to hang (just needed to get appropriate fixings that suit the soft walls), and they look very good. The soft close cupboards and drawers are nice to use. But, the one thing I don't like about the kitchen is that they are made of low grade, low density chipboard, and the white laminate covering is also low quality. Now the cabinet doors are splitting and flaking where the kettle is, by the hob and by the dishwasher. Seems their doors are not really suitable for use in kitchens. I am in the process of fitting my kitchen, well an experienced kitchen fitter friend is doing it for me, but he is bemused. Glenn says he has never come across a kitchen before that does not have space behind the floor units for pipework. In other words, the back of Ikea kitchen floor units have to fit flush against the wall and the waste and water pipes go below the units on the floor (pump needed for the waste) or through your cupboard space rather than behind it. It isn't a design fault.

The issue is how UK electrics and plumbing are installed in housing. Ikea sell kitchens across Europe and they sell the same Kitchens cupboards regardless of what European country you are in.

Also Ikea cabinets are deeper than Kitchens from the likes of the DIY sheds and other mass produced kitchen suppliers. This means you end up with more cabinet space.

When you have visited and stayed in friends' houses who can't fit their dishes and pans into their kitchen cupboards due to the depth, you end up appreciating the wider depth cupboards.

I would say that no service void is needed at the back of the units if your plumbing is up to date and carried under the plinth at approx 100mm from floor.Service voids are now dated and are only needed for unprofessional lazy fitters. IKEA kitchens are practical and the quality is far better than B&Q`s Cooke & Lewis or Wickes. Not to mention the geniuslittle add ons that can be had at excellent prices. £50 for a soli wood chopping board at B&Q, £7.99 at IKEA!!

The issue isn't Ikea cupboards, as they are sold all around Europe, but UK housing stock.

If you are planning a new kitchen but aren't changing the electrics and gas then don't expect an Ikea kitchen to fit without cutting holes in the base cupboards.

Written on: 19/06/2011

we have just returned from ikea in oldham looking at their kitchens. we have spent weeks looking all over the north west. every other shop that we have been to have offered a free design and planning service, however ikea want £100. we approached a guy about planning our kitchen and were told because it was sunday he was too busy to help us even though he was only walking round. we had £5,000 to spend so as you can imagine another store will now be getting our money. I'm very surprised by this review. I went into the Ashton branch yesterday and the guy who did our plan for us was brilliant. He spent around 40 mins with us, we had a good idea of what we wanted and had all dimensions etc with us and there was no charge whatsoever. He printed off the plan and gave it to us at the end of the visit with itemised and priced list. I could'nt fault their service and attention to detail. I will be fitting the kitchen myself and at around £3000 for their top of the range gear I won't be looking anywhere else.

Bought a 36" wide gas stove from Ikea Burlington Ont. it was missing the
connector, Ikea customer service could not care less they simply referred
to Whirlpool. What a joke, here I am 60 days later and cooking on a
hotplate. You can not even call Whirlpool you must go through a dist.
I would not recommend Ikea to anyone. They do not back up their products. (read more)

One point however is the fact that there is no allowance for pipes etc behind the cabinets so if you have loads of pipes be prepared to attach to battens, which may mean deeper worktops. Not a problem in my case as went for made to measure worktops also... (read more)

While there were major communication issues with the original installer from Aussemble who gave me the wrong my Ikea kitchen was installed in March 2011. Had to return two damaged shelves that were discovered when the pantry. I have noted a lip in the join on the benchtop and fine scratches began appearing on the matt black laminated benchtop within 2 days of installation, meaning the surface isn't durable. Reported this to Ikea as a quality issue on March 27, in person at Ikea Logan, and... (read more)
