Good Points: Fantastic cars. My one has never let me down and is 14 years old. highly recommended.
Bad Points: Rear wheel arches are starting to rust.
General comments: These cars are getting old now. But if you find one which has been well looked after. I'm sure you will get years of trouble free motoring from it.

Apart from the niggles I have experienced, my BMW 320i has been extremely reliable and overall, an excellent machine. It is hard to imagine that it is thirteen years old. The overall experience is better than that of many newer cars I have ridden in. he fuel economy is good and the car is extremely reasonable to maintain if you deal with independent garages. Although my car is equipped with 15" wheels, the ride quality is not bad at all. Steering feel is excellent and the driving experience subl ...

Stock without any modifications and the car is super fast, as fast and maybe faster than a lot of new cars on the road. The car must be revved up to perform. The sport mode is just awesome and pulls the car for more power at whatever speed. Auto gearbox very silky smooth and this car always has some reserve power left. Kick down at 160 kph and the car drops a gear revs up and pulls up to 190 and beyond. this car is damn fast. Even some 3.0 can have problems catching up on highway.

Standard Review:
I've had my 320i coupe for 2 years now as standard. It's pretty sluggish there doesn't seem to be an awful lot of power for a 6 cylinder, 2 litre injection. It's very underpowered for 150bhp. Off the line it's slow, you really have to hit the high revs to get it moving. Hit 3rd gear and you will see what it's made of; it lacks low end, which many cars have in abundance. But on the other hand it has mid range and top end to keep pulling and pulling, which many other cars don't s ...

I bought a BMW 320i E36 4 months ago for $3500 NZ and invested another $1000 in two rear shocks, a transmission flush and fluid replacement and some upholstery repairs. For $4500 in total is a great car, looks and runs great and still has some style.
Anyway, if the car lasts for the 3 years I need it it will be the best buy in my life, considering how much fun I have everyday going from home to work in Wellington.

Bought the car at 190800kms Still runs very smooth.
Chip and throttle body was replaced by Peak Performance by the previous owner, so I don't know how far the performance has improved compared to stock.
Acceleration is slow, sluggish and heavy on first gear - feels like driving a truck. It gets snappier at high rpm 3000 and above. You have to rev the car aggressively to wake it up. Maybe because it is using timing chain instead of timing belts.
Have Good Year NCT5 fitted, softer and less fric ...

In all it runs on an oily rag, you can park it in a matchbox and goes like a bat out of hell.
I have had two 320I E36s. The fist was written off in a crash (320 vs. Ford Explorer at 70km/ph). The other driver came through a red hit me in the passenger front side, due to the air bags and other features I walked away with only two bruised ribs.
Very good car, brilliant looks, street credit and just plain fun to drive.

I have had my 1992 BMW 3 Series 320i E36 for about a year. It has over 220,000 miles on it. Apparently, it was maintained well before I bought it since the engine seems to be in great shape. Car feels solid and eager. Great car for out of city driving and in city driving. May be lacks a little bit of torque for city driving (it feels like 100 hp, not 150 hp in the city).
This particular car achieves it maximum published speed (130 mph) after so many years and so many miles. Strongly rec ...

I recently purchased a 1997 320i (M-tech spec), and am very happy with it. This is my third BMW, and is by far the best. My previous car was a 1998 520i (under powered).
Looks aside, it has a rear wheel drive with the 150BHP straight six cylinder engine and the great chasis is a winning formula. I had to replace a water pump , battery and clutch, but one can't hold that against any car that has done 85,000 miles.

Well, I purchased a 1991 BMW 320i e36 for my wife as she found our 300TE Mercedes wagon just too big.
The BMW so far has had the auto gearbox rebuilt twice, 5 of the 6 ignition coils replaced, leaking diff side seals replaced and the glovebox just won't open....
The car has done 78500km with 3 owners...
My wife loves it so I can't sell it !!!
She thinks it is more feminine than a cold austere Mercedes....

The BMW 320i e36 has a Silky smooth engine right through the rev range, seamless auto-box and outstanding handling. A true "drivers car". Although my 320i is 9 years old and has covered 115,000 miles,it gives me and my partner a driving experience that I would associate with many new "lesser" cars. For example, following a traffic accident recently, the BMW had to go in for front-end repairs, We were given a courtesy vehicle that had done just 500 miles and was 4 weeks old. Whilst it was quiet a ...

I purchase my 1991 model 320i 4 door in Chrismas Eve last year as a prepent for myself. The car has 125,000 km on the clock, and cost me AUS$ 20,000. It is a vast improvement to the e30 323i I use to have; sure, it is not as quick in a stop start situation but once it get on the way it just goes. With the beautiful engine and handling to match, I have no regret getting this 12 years old car. A new chips replacement will hopefully improve the performance department some what.

Just purchased this 320i sedan 1994 model about a month and a half ago and I'm very happy with it despite its age. Handling is superb and fuel consumption is very good for a six cylinder. Acceleration is not as fast as the local Fords and Holdens but when you get to speed it feels very stable.

Had the car from new for 12 years. It has been a most pleasant experience. 120000klms. main dealer serviced and no big problems. Service charges high but long term costs low due to reliability.

Very impressed with this BMW 320i e36, but I have to be practical and get a four door now.
The best car I have ever owned; reliable, economical, head - turning, comfortable, great performance, well-made, with the most silky-smooth engine I have ever encountered.
Mine's getting-on a bit now, 1993, but you would swear blind that it was a new car, the paint is sooo shiny, there are no squeaks and the car handles like it is on rails.
Audi have the edge on interiors aesthetically, but the Bimmer ...

I am very happy with my BMW 320i. It has got things that could be improved, but it always happens with all the cars. The BMW 320i e36 is more comfortable than for example the audi A4 of 1996 (I have driven it). The series 3 e36 of BMW doesn't seem to be the excellent car it is when you drive it. In fact this is very similar in comfort, drive-pleasure, performance and general feeling to the new model (e46). It is worth buying an old BMW 3 series from friends or family.
