“A terrible product”

Written on: 01/08/2014 by Ariellaf205 (1 review written)

I put bought a Post Office Travel Money Card for a trip to the US. I put £750 on the card, by electronic transfer using my bank card at my local post office. The trip to the US was cancelled, so I went into the same post office to get my money back, and was told that they could not do that, and I had to call the number on the card. I called the number, (15 July) and was told I could not get the money back by electronic transfer, that there was a 15 day procedure to process my request, and… Read Full Review

“Post Office Travel Card”

Written on: 30/07/2014 by Rhodesee (1 review written)

This card is useless. First we struggled to top-up because small print restricts to £1000 PER YEAR! After begging them to allow a further top-up the 'service' encountered a technical fault the result of which we can't now top-up at all. Service is terrible, the helpline response was, verbatim, there!s a problem what do you expect us to do. What's the point of a travel card that doesn't allow you to top-up and use whilst travelling, leaving the user stranded without money. It's useless, AVOID… Read Full Review

“Declined in the USA -filled to the max for ease £5000!!”

Written on: 26/07/2014 by Pranav185 (1 review written)

My son has moved over to the USA to study, we got this card filled to the max so he could purchase items he needed to live there, pay for tuition fees etc and from day one it has been a total farce! Was declined in shops, large branded shops, so now heading to the Bank to open a account! We wanted his move over to be as smooth as possible, but when you can't buy necessities it is not good. That is £5,000 that is sat on the card and not able to use. I DO NOT RECOMMEND AT ALL I DONT GIVE… Read Full Review

“Not very good I'm afraid”

Written on: 14/07/2014 by AraceliKing178 (1 review written)

I got my teenage son this card so that he wouldn't lose his cash in Cyprus. What a disaster. He tried to withdraw funds at the ATM. The statement clearly states that the attempts were declined. He had €400 credit but could only use €11. Hmmmm. I then had to log into my own online baking on MY holiday and send some cash to his normal card so he could eat and drink. It's a great idea but it's just that, an idea. In my experience it just doesn't work in practice. I really wouldn't advise… Read Full Review

“Beware- massive exchange rate charges on card didnt work ”

Written on: 12/07/2014

I took out this card when going to Berlin in May. I like others was sold the card whilst in the Post Office, and trusted 'The Post Office' brand. I had a card for Australia last year and it worked fine. The euro card for whatever reason rejected the number when I went to withdraw cash, and then locked, so I was unable to use the card at all, luckily I had other cards. I did not have time to call PO but expected to resolve the issue on my return. As well as opening the card with £250, I loaded… Read Full Review

“Just awful”

Written on: 12/07/2014 by sfMoore441 (1 review written)

The app continually stopped working. Once you have uploaded money onto the card you may as well wave goodbye to it as to retrieve any extra you don't spend you have to pay ridiculous charges. I got a US dollar card expecting to use it when in countries like Zimbabwe who use the US dollar but turns out this too results in more charges as I was not in the US. So many better options, don't waste your time or money on this… Read Full Review

“Embarassing declines on Post Office Travel card”

Written on: 11/07/2014

I recently took out a Post Office Canadian dollar travel card and it was repeatedly declined in shops and restaurants. It was accepted in some but we never knew why so we kept trying and on at least 12 occasions it was declined. We also tried to withdraw cash from an ATM, something you are supposed to be able to do, but this was not possible either. Luckily we had a credit card with us but the charges on this defeated the object of taking the travel card. On return I visited the post… Read Full Review

Wow! Are you people that stupid? It is a prepaid card of course it isn't going to work at pay at pumps!!! The card worked ok for me & was able to withdraw the funds from the ATM and by buying goods by card. Used all the funds before returning to the UK as I always do when going to Europe so I'm not charged back the exchange rate back into pounds which is always going to be bad (their rate was bad would definately recommend using up all the funds on card!!!) would recommend card to friends. … Read Full Review

I was convienced at the oost office to take up this card instead of travellers cheques for my travel, which I did. But after 24 hours which was promised to me to get the activation code, nothing came, I did not get one. And after queries nothing came and I had to travel to a strange place without money. Came back, asked for a full refund of my money whch I have prepaid onto the card but not been able to access, nothing is forth coming for four months now. I had a absolute nightmare with these, I was getting married abroad and they cancelled the card the morning of my wedding so I couldn't pay the wedding dinner, I had to them provide a picture of my passport and a utility bill to get my access to my money. I had to borrow money from family who had already flown out to pay for MY wedding dinner.

I also occurred £250 worth of call charges while I was their to try and sort it.

I haven't complained yet but I'm going to,

Seems like I'm not the only one who thinks they are useless.

Completely agree, will not be using again as it's not accepted at Tolls and many auto fuel stations in France. Complete waste of time while they are making interest on my money, that I can't access !

“Thank goodness I had other cards”

Written on: 20/06/2014 by Cardenasjm332 (1 review written)

The only use I got out of this card in California was in restaurants where one swipe and no PIN number required terminals were in place. If the machines required a PIN number then the card was immediately rejected. I eventually found a very helpful bank employee who took over 15 minutes with me to work out how I could actually get some money out. This of course defeated the purpose of the card as there is a $3 charge and the max you can take out is $300 at a time. Never, ever again would I use… Read Full Review

Made to send a copy of my passport, bank statement and drivers license. No response from any of the emails I sent through. Was told every day that the account would be activated and that someone would call me, this NEVER happened. When asked why my no one had contacted me, they could not give me an answer. “So many people don't understand this card”

Written on: 15/06/2014 by randomUserName1 (1 review written)

There is only one negative review here that I can understand and respect their 1 star review, and that's when the card isn't accepted anywhere. I, on the other hand, did not experience that at all, as the States accepted it everywhere. I'm really disappointed at the massive amount of negative reviews on this card which is down to hundreds of people NOT UNDERSTANDING WHAT THIS CARD IS FOR. This is a transaction card FIRST, and a cash card SECOND/NEVER. People, read the small print before you… Read Full Review

Firstly, if you disagree with the majority of people on this review please avoid using terms such as 'idiot'. Just because you disagree does not make everyone else stupid! It is obvious when reading many (a big majority) of the reviews that people have problems not only with the awful customer service of the post office but with shop transactions as well as cash withdrawals. I have had a card for two years and have had nothing but trouble with it and, having just come back from a trip abroad where once again it didn't work properly for either cash or shop purchases, I will be cancelling it. It's obvious from everyone's comments that a lot of people are experiencing the same problems in a variety of different countries so the question is what is the Post Office doing about it -and more importantly, what assistance are they giving their customers ? The emphatic answer here appears to be nothing and no. If you bought something at a shop you found to be faulty when you got home, you'd expect to return it and receive a working replacement or a full refund at the price you paid. The Post Office will already have made a good amount of profit on the original conversion rate when the card was loaded. The 'rip off' comes when they are at fault and then penalise you again on the exchange rate. This card is a fantastic idea but it's supposed to remove the worry of carrying large amounts of cash - it only replaces that with the worry about whether you get any cash or pay for anything at all ! I think I'll be sticking with cash from now on.

It's pretty insulting to claim that all the negative reviews are from 'idiots' who don't understand how the card works........or supposed to work!!

What's to understand?, you load the card with the currency of your choice and then use it as you would a normal debit/credit card in the country you're visiting........including, may I say, cash withdrawals at ATMs. Your assertion that it is primarily a transaction card is totally false and misleading. The Post Office go to great lengths to tell any potential users of this card that it can be used for both purposes. What's the point of having a card where the money loaded on it is inaccessible as a cash withdrawal?

Perhaps you don't appreciate the anguish, frustration and logistical nightmare of not being able to access cash or be able to pay for things abroad, I hope it never happens to you but, if it did, you may be a little more tolerant of those who have gone through it.

Written on: 10/06/2014

I used the Post Office Money Card card for a 2 week holiday in Canada and preloaded with Canadian Dollars (“CAD”). I knew some of the do’s and don’ts from other reviews. If you stick to the guidelines (see below), you should not have problems. I loaded the PO Money Card app onto my Galaxy Tab and the app worked particularly well. The guidelines for these cards that everyone should know are: 1) This is a debit card and not a credit card. Some vendors will not take debit cards. Check… Read Full Review

We used this on a trip to Europe and hit a different problem to Adelaide. The card worked OK with the cash I preloaded before the trip. But I also planned to top it up while travelling. For this to work, you need to take your other account card with you as well, but nobody said that. So I was completely stumped the first time I tried to top up (in Venice) and discovered I needed my debit card's CVC number... which I hadn't brought with me! Almost made the card useless and we ended up using a credit card for cash. Expensive - but just lucky we'd brought that or would have been completely stuck.

“It is not all it is cracked up to be”

Written on: 30/05/2014 by Johnstonql66 (1 review written)

The card on appearance looks like a fake, very colourful with holiday travel money plastered on it. It seemed ok in Italy for restaurants for petrol stations it was hopeless and Europcar would not accept it. Do not ask the supplier if they accept the card, just give it to them. We ended up with around £400 in Euros left on the card and found out like everyone else it is 15 days to get our money back, this is outrageous. We will be looking for another card on our next trip this is too… Read Full Review
